Concurrent Sessions Blackboard The Center for Online Teaching and Learning provides a face to face workshop to assist students with Blackboard questions and concerns. Learn how and when to address anxiety, the importance of attitude and motivational incentives. Career Services: How to Find Campus Employment On-campus student employment is a great opportunity to gain professional experience while making connections in a part-time paid position. Employment is available in multiple departments and in a variety of roles. Come to this session to learn about different types of employment, how to apply and follow up on an application, as well as explore other ideas for gaining experience during one s education. Financial Aid: Learning the GSU System Attend one of two presentations on how to apply for federal, state and institutional financial aid. Topics discussed include: when and how to apply, what you might be eligible to receive, exploring all your options and borrowing responsibly. Information Technology Services: Microsoft Office Web Apps and SkyDrive Did you know that you have free access to the web version of MS Word, Excel, Power Point and One Note through your GSU student email account? Did you know that your email account includes 7GB of storage for your documents and files? This demo will introduce you to the web applications of Office 365 and your SkyDrive. Navigating Your Library s Website This session provides an overview of online library resources. Topics include selecting appropriate databases, using the I-Share catalog, searching tips and strategies, and time for Q&A. Release the Leader in YOU! This workshop will discuss opportunities to get engaged in the university from joining a club to student governance. Come to this workshop to receive all the trade secrets to enhancing the educational experience and releasing the leader in YOU! Transfer Success Panel with Orientation Leaders We re sure you have more questions. Here s your chance to ask current students about their experiences and make connections with your peers. Veterans Resource Center Meet in Hall of Governors near the Academic Resource Center to be escorted to the session location. Meet other veterans on campus. Introduce yourself to the Coordinator of Veteran Services. Visit the Veteran Resource Center and learn where you can go on campus to enjoy a quiet spot you can call your own. Writing Tips for APA Research Papers Join us so you will be prepared for writing. This workshop will discuss how to begin a research paper and how to conquer APA documentation style. This workshop will also inform you of the resources and services offered by the GSU Writing Center. Your Health/Wellness: Meditation session Mindfulness has been shown to be very helpful in reducing stress, increasing concentration skills and improving emotional regulation. Daily meditation is the exercise that strengthens mindfulness. Come to this session and learn how to meditate and begin an ongoing meditation practice. For your convenience, Follett s GSU Bookstore and the GSU Cafe will be staffed during new student orientation. Feel free to visit and see what they have to offer. Prairie Place GSU s First on Campus Housing Prairie Place is the first on-campus residential community on the GSU campus. The complex is open to enrolled graduate and undergraduate students and consists of fully furnished apartments and suites. Learn more about the benefits of living on campus and what Prairie Place has to offer you. 4

Spring 2015 Welcome Week Events are free to GSU students with I.D. Tuesday, January 20 Jaguar Welcome Café Noon to 6 p.m., Hall of Governors. Student leadership meet-and-greet. Enjoy a beverage and conversation with fellow students and learn more about student leadership opportunities and student senate, GSU Program Council, the Phoenix and the Community Service Council. Noon to 6 p.m., Hall of Governors. The Student Life Pantry Spring Opening Noon to 5 p.m., Student Commons. The Food Pantry services any member of the GSU community in immediate need. Thursday, January 22 Alternative Spring Break information session 3:30 p.m., room A2110. Participate in the nationwide movement that involves college students serving their communities. The Center for Civic Engagement and Community Service will take 10 GSU students to San Diego, CA for a week full of service projects, civic engagement and networking fun. Women s Basketball Game 6 p.m., GSU Gymnasium. Cheer on the Jaguars as they compete against Judson University. Spring events are free for GSU students with current myonecard. Monday, January 26 MLK Commemorative Program The GSU community celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The program will include inspirational messages of hope and change, uplifting performances and presentations. The program is sponsored by Student Life and Intercultural Affairs. For more information, email rclay@govst.edu. Thursday, January 29 Open Mic Night 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., GSU Café Annex. We will transform the GSU Café Annex into a hip underground coffee house. Enjoy original poetry, singing, and spoken word by GSU students and special guests. What s New @ GSU? On Campus Housing GSU now has on campus housing for students of all class levels first year through graduate students. Enjoy the convenience of living on campus in fully furnished apartments or suites with all utilities, cable TV service and Internet service included in the cost of housing. You will be close to all of the services and programs offered at GSU. The third floor of Prairie Place houses our graduate students and transfer students over 21 years of age. Prairie Place has a laundry room, vending machines and a convenience store in the building. There are lounges for studying or socializing and community kitchens on every floor. A shuttle service provides transportation to academic buildings and the Metra. You can choose an academic year (fall & spring semesters) or 12 month contract. As a spring semester housing applicant, you will be billed ONLY for the remaining balance of the contract you select. Declining Balance Meal Plan Sign up for a convenient & flexible meal plan that will ensure you have monies specifically available for food and beverage purchases on the GSU campus Students can choose one of three priced plans: $500/semester $1000/semester $1500/semester GSU EAT Well ON CAMPUS App Convenience is now at your fingertips. No longer do you have to wait in line for your latte, pizza or burger you can pre order all these and more and have them waiting for you, hot and ready, at the GSU Café.
