MATH OLYMPIAD PREP COURSE November 2009 to December 2009 Venue: International Youth Centre, Jalan Yaacob Latiff, Bandar Tun Razak, 56000 Cheras, Kuala Lumpur INTRODUCTION Are you really passionate about mathematics, and want to challenge yourself beyond classroom mathematics? Do you want to sharpen your mathematical problem solving skills as well as to develop rigorous thinking? If yes, then this prep course is perfect for you. The modules used in this camp are developed exclusively for students who excel in classroom mathematics and seek to challenge themselves further. Students will learn precisely those topics needed to excel in national and international olympiads. This course is specially tailored to prepare and challenge even the very best students in Malaysia. This course is open to all secondary school students. Please take note that this is not an SPM or PMR preparation course. PACKAGES There will be two packages: Beginner and Advanced. The Beginner package is for students with limited or no prior exposure to math olympiad material. This includes students who have participated in olympiads without proper training and coaching. The Advanced package is for students who have mastered the basics of math olympiad and want to develop their problem solving skills further. Each package consists of four classes.

SCHEDULE FOR BEGINNER PACKAGE Date Day Session Topic Note 23 November Monday 1 (Bgn) Algebra During school holiday 24 November Tuesday 2 (Bgn) Number Theory During school holiday 25 November Wednesday 3 (Bgn) Geometry During school holiday 26 November Thursday 4 (Bgn) Combinatorics During school holiday SCHEDULE FOR ADVANCED PACKAGE Date Day Session Topic Note 7 December Monday 1 (Adv) Algebra During school holiday 8 December Tuesday 2 (Adv) Number Theory During school holiday 9 December Wednesday 3 (Adv) Geometry During school holiday 10 December Thursday 4 (Adv) Combinatorics During school holiday * (Bgn) = Beginner, (Adv) = Advanced

DAILY SCHEDULE TIME ACTIVITY 9.00 AM Arrival and Registration 9.15 AM Lesson 1 10.45 AM Brunch 11.00 AM Lesson 2 12.30 PM Lunch 2.00 PM Lesson 3 4.30 PM Tea / Departure SYLLABUS AND TEXT The course follows the international standard curricula for math olympiad, which covers four major topics: Algebra, Combinatorics, Number Theory and Geometry. Algebra covers solutions of equations, inequalities, functions, sequences, and polynomials. Combinatorics covers bijective proof, counting principle, pigeonhole principle, binomial coefficients and principle of induction. Number Theory covers primes and divisibility, modulo arithmetic, numerical functions, and Diophantine equations. Geometry covers topics on plane geometry, including collinearity and concurrence, circle, triangle, polygon, and exotic geometries (inversive, complex, and analytic geometries). The classes will be taught by Mr. Suhaimi Ramly, the Malaysian national team coach for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). He has been involved in math olympiad since 1998, and was selected to represent the country in the IMO three times. He won the national olympiad twice with a perfect score, and he was the first Malaysian to win an IMO Bronze Medal in 2000. A group of facilitators will help run the course. They are former and current team members of the Malaysia IMO national team. The textbook that will be used throughout the course is Basics of Math Olympiad (Volume 1-4) by Suhaimi Ramly. In addition, we will provide handouts and problem sets for the students.

REGISTRATION FEE The registration fee is RM 200.00, for all packages. This is compulsory for both packages, though you only need to pay once if you take both Beginner and Advanced packages. This fee will cover textbook, handout, and stationeries. TUITION FEE The tuition fee is as follows: Beginner Package only RM 400.00 Advanced Package only RM 400.00 Both Packages RM 600.00 Those joining in the middle of the package (after the first session have commenced) will be charged RM100 per session, in addition to the registration fee. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) 1. My kid is interested in this course, but he is still in primary school. Can he/she attend? This course is open to all student currently enrolling in secondary schools. Some advanced primary school students are also welcome, but please check with us first. 2. Am I qualified to enroll in this course? There is no official qualification criteria. In general, the students who attended our math camps in the past possess the following qualities: passionate about Mathematics; willingness to learn new things; performed reasonably well (grades A or B) in Math subjects at school; creative and analytical minded. Those with the abovementioned qualities are qualified to enter the Beginner package. If in doubt, please contact us. 3. Am I qualified to enroll in the Advanced package without going through the Beginner package? If you have one or more of the following: have competed in national or international level olympiad and placed in the top 1% (nationally), or top 10% (internationally); have completed basic math olympiad training elsewhere; have demonstrated mastery on the basic math olympiad topics, namely Algebra, Combinatorics, Number Theory and Geometry; then you are recommended to enroll in the Advanced package. We recommend other students to enroll in the Beginner package to cover the basics, and then proceed to the Advanced package. If in doubt, please contact us.

4. How do I get to the International Youth Centre (IYC)? For those taking the LRT, the nearest station is Bandar Tun Razak, which is 5 minutes from IYC by cab. The map is as follows:

5. Will lodging be provided? Unfortunately we are unable to provide accommodation. Please make your own arrangement for lodging if you are traveling from out of state. You may contact IYC at 03 9171 9204/05. Room rates at IYC are as follow: Single room : RM 60 per night Double room : RM 80 per night Four bedded room : RM 110 per night Dormitory : RM 25 per night, per person * All room fees are including breakfast. 6. Will meals be provided? We will provide three meals (brunch, lunch and tea) everyday. Please let us know in advance if you have a specific dietary requirement, and we will do our best to accommodate. 7. Can I choose to attend only a few selected class? Preparation for math olympiad is a comprehensive effort, and some topics build on the knowledge and skills acquired in the other topics. Therefore, we do not allow students to pick or choose classes to attend. Rather, we require everyone to attend all classes in the package. An exception is for those who join in the middle of the package those students are still required to attend all subsequent classes in the package. 8. How many students are there in a class? We are expecting 20 to 30 students in a class. A smaller class is better, so each student would get personal attention from the facilitators. 9. How do I request for a refund? Requests for a refund must be made in writing, addressed to our office. There will not be any refund for registration fee if the student attended the first class. Tuition fee refund for unattended classes will be calculated pro rata. We will provide full refund if made before the first day of class.

10. What can I expect to achieve after attending this course? After the course, you will have developed rigorous thinking in mathematics and the ability to provide proof of mathematical statements. You will have a working knowledge of problem solving tools and strategies, as well as some problem solving tricks. You are ready to tackle problems at the national olympiad level, and some easier international olympiad competitions. 11. What is International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)? The IMO is the world championship of mathematics for high school students. The IMO is held annually in different cities. The IMO 2009 will take place in Bremen, Germany. You can get more info at the IMO official website: www.imo-official.org. 12. What is Olimpiad Matematik Kebangsaan (OMK)? OMK is a prestigious mathematical competition in Malaysia, recognized by the Ministry of Education. It is open to all secondary school students from Form 1 to Form 6. The main objective of OMK is to celebrate mathematical excellence among high school students, as well as to select Malaysian representatives to the Asia Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO) and the IMO. 13.
