We were notified by the district that Humble ISD schools are responsible for following Texas House Bill #3 Section 39.023. It reads Each time a student fails to perform satisfactorily (does not pass) a 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grade TAKS test, the school district is required to provide accelerated instruction in the particular subject area(s). Accelerated instruction may require participation before or after normal school hours. A student who fails the TAKS test must complete accelerated instruction BEFORE the student will be promoted to the next grade level. A student who fails to complete the required accelerated instruction MAY NOT be promoted to the next grade level. What does this mean? We were already doing this for 8th grade math and reading. It means that 6th graders taking reading and math TAKS, 7th graders taking reading, writing, and math TAKS, and 8th graders taking Science and Social Studies TAKS will be required to receive accelerated instruction should they not pass any of these tests BEFORE THEY ARE PROMOTED TO THE NEXT GRADE LEVEL. The main thing is to emphasize to your student how important it is to do well on each of the TAKS tests this year. We will have a plan to work with any student that fails a TAKS test and we will do so after we receive results in May. Our plan is to complete this extra instruction before students are released for the summer break! WHAT S NEW AT WMS? STUDENT ID BADGES Students will be be required to wear ID badges at Woodcreek Middle School. Our plan is to use the badges for various things including: security, library check-out, cafeteria accounts, textbook issue, etc. The first badge and lanyard, which will be issued at registration, will be FREE. There will be a fee for replacement. There will also be disciplinary consequences for students who do not wear their badges at all times.
