Who are the Board of Regents? The Board of Regents retains full power of organization and governance of the University of California system, managing all 10 campuses, 5 medical centers, off campus research labs, and observatories. The Board of Regents operate through 10 different committees (Compliance and Audit, Compensation, Education Policy, Health Services, Investments, Long Range Planning, Finance, Governance, Oversight of the Department of Energy Laboratories). The Board of Regents meets six times a year, every other month for two-three day meetings typically at UC San Francisco. The committees will meet as needed throughout the year at different times.

Who Comprises the Board? The Board of Regents has 26 voting members. 18 Regents are appointed by the Governor of California, approved by the California Senate Rules Committee, for 12 year terms. One Student Regent appointed after their one year as a designate. Seven Ex-Officio members: Governor of California Lieutenant Governor Speaker of the Assembly State Superintendent of Public Instruction President of the Alumni Association Vice President of the Alumni Association President of the UC System In addition to the 26 voting members, there are non-voting members that include: Two faculty members (Chair and Vice-Chair of the Academic Council) Two staff advisors The Student Regent Designate

What does the Student Regent do? The Student Regent will help to establish policy in areas such as student fees, admissions, and financial aid. The Student Regent will sit on committees of their choosing. The Student Regent will also be responsible for training and mentoring the student regent designate. In the past student regents have chosen specific issues to work on and influence change throughout the UC system.

Student Regent Success Sadia Saifuddin (14-15) (undergraduate student from UC Berkeley) established the first system-wide food security model to eradicate hunger and malnourishment on UC campuses, and chaired the first systemwide committee on food insecurity to research, develop, and implement best practices across the UC system. Saifuddin currently serves as an international speaker, trainer, and thought leader in higher education. Jonathan Stein (12-13) (Graduate Law and Public Policy Student UC Berkeley) Helped lead a system wide voter registration drive that registered over 50,000 UC students to vote and did GOTV work on behalf of Proposition 30, which raised upper income taxes and ultimately generated state funding for UC.
