THURSDAY 1ST AUGUST 2013 Welcome back to a new and exciting term. We trust that you all had an enjoyable holiday break. This term will see us all on stage at the Regent in Week 9 performing our school production. Every student is involved in this wonderful opportunity and information regarding ticket sales will come out in Week 5. ANOTHER WIN FOR ROSS A massive congratulations to Sarah Munn and Kaitlyn Watts who secured our first ever win at the Super Sports Badminton at the end of last term. If you want to know more, check out the writeup on the next page. TERM THREE CONFERENCES These are taking place on Tuesday 10th and Thursday 12th September. It s easy to book a conference, simply visit www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and enter the code: 95E76 If you do not have access to the internet then complete the slip at the end of the newsletter and return it to the office. Please be aware that Tuesday the 10th is a half-day at school. IMPORTANT FOR YEAR 8 PARENTS Sadly, your child will be leaving us for their continued learning at Secondary School next year. Most of the schools have now visited and our advice is to get along to as many as you can to see which school seems right for your child. The following are the open days and times of each school: Palmerston North Boys High School: August 7th, Tour at 9:45AM or 5:30/7:00PM. Freyberg High School: August 14th, 4PM or 7PM. Awatapu College: August 6th, 5:30PM in the Auditorium. Palmerston North Girls High School: August 8th, 3:30PM and 7PM. St Peters College: August 15th, 7-9PM. Queen Elizabeth College: August 13th, 5-7PM. We have been invited to Adopt a Turbo and have the players from the number 22 jersey assigned to us. They are Newton Tudreu and Lewis Marshall. The jersey sponsor John Bates Wheel Alignment chose Ross. The players will be in the school during the season helping us out and interacting with students. If you want to see the Turbos this season and save lots of $$$ check out the flyer attached to the newsletter. For parents who are receiving the newsletter by email, your child will have the flyer with them when they come home from school.

LATEST NEWS and INFORMATION SCHOOL PRODUCTION ARE YOU READY? Ross 's 2013 School Production takes us into the competitive world of smartphone technology. Two of the biggest multinational companies, Samsung and Apple, challenge each other to establish, once and forever, who has produced the ultimate application. This new app has the capacity for a user to produce 3D stories right before their very eyes, just by texting in a title. Who will triumph? TEACHER AIDE MAKING A SPLASH IN THE WOW WORLD! Ross s very own Teacher Aide Jennie Munro has, once again, made it to The World of Wearable Arts awards in Wellington. She enters the Brancott Estate WOW awards every year. Her latest creation is her fourth design to make it to the final show alongside entries from professional costume designers from all around the world. This year's creation is destined for the Man Unleashed section. Her entry in last year's WOW awards Visual Symphony section earned Jennie one of just 11 Honourable Mentions from judges. Congratulations Jennie - we look forward to seeing your creation unveiled in September. SCHOOL COUNCIL The Student Council are very pleased to have a bit in the newsletter. It s a great way to find out what has been going on and to tell you about things that are coming up within the school and the community. So far Student Council have organised two mufti days, a disco, P.E Shed and the tuck shop. Disco The school had a disco on the last Thursday of term 2. We had lots of people and come along and dance and dress up in rubix-cube colours. Everyone enjoyed it and had lots of fun! TuckShop The Tuck Shop has been running very well and we are looking for new, healthier options to sell. It s open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with prices between $1 and $3. P.E Shed Our most recent project is a studentrun, lunchtime PE loan system that is open for students to hire out P.E gear during their free time. We noticed that children were getting a little bored during lunch hours, so we thought a sports equipment hiring system would sort out that problem! People have donated balls, bats and even skipping ropes to go towards that. Student Council could not be more happy with how generous people have been when donating their old gear. A special thanks to Sports Manawatu! YMCA Community Day On Saturday a few students were lucky enough to run the cafe and the YMCA Community Day. The day had lots of stalls and fun things to do. Student Council thought that running the cafe would be a great way to help out in the community and get Ross s name out there. We look forward to helping out in other activities within the community. If you have any questions or suggestions please feel free to email studentcouncil@rossint.school.nz.

COMMUNITY NOTICES... Tall Poppies Did you know that we hold drama classes at your school on a Fridays? After School Adventures After School Adventures, 3-6 pm weekdays. From $15 a day - OSCAR approved. Amazing & Fun After School Experience. Call us on 357-5323 or visit us online at www.afterschooladventures.co.nz. Scouts Manawatu SCOUTS NZ is alive and well but we have been very much under-promoting ourselves. Now it s time to share the good news and invite youth and adults to join us both girls and boys of all ages. Scouting is broken into a number of sections based largely on school years. Most sections meet once per week during the school terms, plus some weekends out and about activities You don t have to have youth involved personally. Training provided and NZQA based certificates have been introduced. Programmes for the younger sections are particularly developed by a team of experienced leaders nationally along a consistent theme for the term. This makes a superb tool for new and experienced leaders alike. To be put in touch with your nearest Scout Group contact us on 0800 SCOUTS or go on the website to see more and make contact that way www.scouts.org.nz If your area doesn t currently have a Scout Group contact us at 0800 Scouts and ask to talk to Gwyn (the Regional Manager) about starting something in your locality. The Gifted Education Center Palmerston North On Saturday 24 August the One Day School in Palmerston North will be holding an Open Day for children, parents and teachers to come in and see what One Day School is all about. There is a cost of $35.00 for schools and families to attend and bookings are required. If you would like further information about this event or the One Day School, please contact Andrea Heal by phone on 022 0745124 or by emailing andrea.heal@giftededucation.org.nz.
