The academic year has truly been exceptional for the Lambda Phi Chapter of Order of Omega! The chapter hosted two Train the Trainer workshops, an annual Faculty/Staff Appreciation Brunch, and educational events for Hazing Prevention Week and Alcohol Awareness Week. The chapter also awarded two recipients with the inaugural Lambda Phi Chapter Scholarship. Finally, at the Coalition for Collegiate Women s Leadership's spring conference, the Lambda Phi Chapter was awarded the 2016 Chapter of Achievement Award from Order of Omega Headquarters. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: AUJANAE WATSON Aujanae Watson, a member of Alpha Xi Delta, currently serves as Chapter President of the Lambda Phi Chapter of Order of Omega. She is committed to bettering Order of Omega at FIU and has started by reevaluating the chapter's programming efforts. Additionally, Aujanae recently accepted the position of Student Board Member on the national Order of Omega Board of Directors. The Lambda Phi Chapter is proud of Aujanae's accomplishments are are excited to see what she does in her leadership roles!
LAMBDA THETA ALPHA LATIN SORORITY, INC. On March 27th, 2017, Yazmin Perez became the third active member of the Gamma Pi Chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. to be initiated into the Lambda Phi Chapter of Order of Omega. With her initiation, every active collegiate member of the Gamma Pi Chapter also holds membership in Order of Omega; the chapter's Vice President, Annette Navarro, was initiated in the Fall of 2016 and the chapter's Orientation Advisor, Jenille Lopez, was initiated in the Spring of 2016. The chapter recently welcomed four more lovely ladies into their chapter and hope they will continue to strive for excellence in academics and leadership. SIGMA ALPHA MU The gentlemen of Sigma Alpha Mu gave weekly salsa lessons throughout the month of March in the GC Pit. Several experienced instructors were present who taught participants basic salsa moves. Each class was incremental--meaning that each class was progressively more challenging and required more advanced technique. All proceeds went to Sigma Alpha Mu's national philanthropy, The Judy Fund with the Alzheimer's Association. Combined with their other philanthropy events and fundraising efforts, the chapter raised $7235.25 for various charitable causes!
SIGMA PHI EPSILON This past February the Florida Nu Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon attended the Sigma Phi Epsilon Carlson Leadership academy; this event is an opportunity for all SigEp chapters in the southeast region to meet up in Atlanta, Georgia. The Florida Nu Chapter was honored with the Excelsior Award for Academics! This award is given to the chapter who fosters a culture of success in the classroom by providing structured academic programming, restorative support, and partnerships with university staff and resources. The chapter also received recognition for their academic excellence at the 2016 Greek Awards and IFC Award Banquet. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: PHYLICIA KIRK Phylicia, a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., was hired as a 2017 Peer Advisor through the Orientation and Parent Programs office. In this position, she will serve as leader and guide for many of the 12,000 incoming students this year. Throughout the summer, she will assist incoming freshmen and transfer students in their 2-day orientation process. Additionally, Phylicia recently served as the Vice President for the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and was recently appointed Council President.
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: MARGI RENTIS Vice President of Public Relations and Marketing for Alpha Chi Omega, Margi Rentis, was selected as the first South Florida recipient of the U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship for Japanese. The Critical Language Scholarship Program, one of the most competitive study abroad scholarships for U.S. citizens, grants university students the opportunity to live abroad in their country of choice for two months during the summer, fully-funded, to study languages critical to U.S. national security. ALPHA CHI OMEGA Alpha Chi Omega raised over $8,000 for a local women's shelter, Inn Transition, and the FIU Victim Empowerment Program through their annual Omega Man Pageant held on February 28th, 2017. The pageant featured nine contestants from different IFC organizations, who joined together to fundraise for a week and to support a common cause: domestic violence awareness.
ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC. Members of the Tau Delta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. joined with the Miami Beach workers and volunteered their time to pick up litter left behind by those visiting for spring break. Miami city administration said, "The city of Miami Beach is grateful to Florida International University s Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity for leading the beach clean up effort after a day filled with Spring Break activities. We hope all visitors follow suit by keeping Miami Beach clean when visiting our beautiful beaches. The chapter's accomplishments were highlighted in FIU News, Huffington Post, and the Miami Herald. Furthermore, the chapter was recognized for their volunteerism at the annual Torch Awards. Above: Lambda Chi Alpha raised over $1000 and gathered 1700 cans of food for Feeding America.
