The Rambler The Grade 8 Band students went to Brandon to participate in the Level One Optimist Festival on April 28th. They did a great job performing at the Westman Centennial Auditorium and completed a Band Basics workshop following their performance. The Band Program has been very fortunate this last little bit. We ve had 2 instruments donated to the program. Shirley and John Russell donated an alto saxophone and John and Dorothy Klassen (Mr. Klassen's parents) donated a tenor sax. The band program is very fortunate to have these instruments and they will be used well in the years to come. Thank you to both for your generous donation. Students are focusing their efforts towards preparing for the year end concert. It will be held on June 9th, at 7pm in the RCI Gym. Students are asked to arrive at 6:30 to set up and tune. If you have any questions about the year end concert or about the band program, please feel free to contact me at the school (204) 328-5364. Angela Roberts, Band Teacher

The Rambler On April 22, Alex from the Brandon Women's Shelter did classroom presentations to the Grades 7, 8, 9, and 10 classrooms. Statistics about domestic and dating violence in Manitoba and Canada was shared. She also addressed what makes healthy and unhealthy relationships, information about gender stereotypes, and power imbalance in various relationships. Digital bullying is the newest and most common form of power imbalance. Alex shared that in a person's lifetime, they will undoubtedly be a victim in a relationship through digital means (texting, social media postings, etc.). It was impressed upon students to never type when they are angry, and to not "share" or "like" negative comments or photos about someone else. What's posted on line is never gone. She shared that employers are now looking at a person's on-line "footprint" as their evolving resume as a means for hiring. Certainly this is food for thought for everyone. The Rambler On April 20, 2015, 11 students from RCI attended an important event at the A.R. McDiarmid Civic Complex in Brandon. Stomp Out Stigma is the title of the regional summit that was created to support an anti-stigma movement. (A national summit in Ottawa was held in the Fall of 2014, where students from all regions of Canada were invited to spend a week in workshops on mental health and stigma reduction.) High school students from Brandon and surrounding area were invited to attend the regional summit held in Brandon. The day was filled with story sharing, challenging stereotypes and common misconceptions. Students and teachers participated in activities that encouraged us to think about what we can do back in our schools to create change. Two amazing speakers were highlighted at the event. Rachel Ashley, a 19-year-old singer/songwriter, uses music as her outlet in dealing with her experience of constant physical and cyberbullying in high school. Rachel s beautiful music and her strong message about doing what you love and following your dreams was heartfelt by all who attended the event. Marli Brown, a Social Worker from Dauphin shared her story about her struggle with Bipolar Disorder and the difficult journey she endured in her twenties and continues to manage in her forties. Despite being in and out of hospitals, starting a family, and completing her University degree, Marli s story of perseverance and courage was truly inspirational. The day s activities provided inspiration to the students. It is our hope that the message will fuel young people s positive action toward change- in how we speak about mental illness and how we treat those with mental illness, as many describe stigma as more life-limiting and disabling than the illness itself, and stigma is also a major barrier to people seeking help. The Stomp Out Stigma event was a great experience for young adults. I learned that a person can still have a normal life like have kids and have a good job, while managing a severe mental illness.
