Program Goal Program Goals o All Upward Bound students will enroll in college and graduate with a bachelor s degree or higher. Program Objectives o Students maintain above a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. o Students meet Math and English standards on State Testing. o Students graduate from high school. o Students graduate from high school in a rigorous program of study. o Students enroll in college the fall after high school graduation. o Students graduate from college.

UB Scholar Meetings Structure This Year: Grades 9-11 meet afterschool for about 45 minutes same activity Seniors meet during the school day (when depends on your school) & we will be focusing on assisting seniors complete their college and financial aid tasks. The meetings will function like a class or workshop, but a bit more relaxed with hands-on activities & discussions We will sometimes be checking students progress of grades, milestones, issues, etc.

UB Scholars Meeting Expectations Show up Ask for Help Take Responsibility for Yourself Communicate with UB Staff Have a Good Attitude Be Casual (but still Respectful)

UB Scholar Meetings Absences You are allowed 1 pre-arranged excused absence per quarter. What is considered excused depends on your advisor. Each absence after the 1 st is a $20 stipend deduction.

UB Scholar Meetings Being Late It is your responsibility to sign in on the sign-in sheet to be counted as present. Depending on how late you are, you may still be counted as absent.

UB Scholars Scheduling Conflict You must arrange a time to meet with your advisor each week. This could be possibly during a lunch or class period during school (homeroom, PE, study hall) but this must be set up by the advisor AND THE SCHOOL. The special arrangement must be the same day as your already established meeting day due to transportation costs for the program.

UB Academies Structure Same topics as UB Scholars, but bigger activities (serves as a culmination of what has been covered during UB Scholars.) Special guest speakers Large scale activities not possible in UB Scholar Meetings Transportation sign up for transportation for each UB Academy if you need it

UB Academies Attendance Students are expected to attend all UB Academies Parents are invited to attend all UB academies this year Absences Must complete a make-up activity

Academic Coaching Required for students whose grades fall below a C or have a quarterly GPA below a 2.5. Any student can sign up for academic coaching you do not have to be failing to utilize it. Academic coaching is one-on-one with a trained coach, conducted outside of the school day at a public location of the student s choice: o o o o John Wood Community College Quincy University The local library The student s school Students are expected to attend all scheduled academic coaching sessions (regardless if coaching was required or voluntary) Non-UB students pay $24-$80 per hour for personalized

Academic Coaching Academic Coaching Steps 1. Coaching requested student/staff completes request form. 2. Match & Schedule Set-up 3. 1 st Session: complete contract & needs assessment 4. Future sessions: work on the plan that you created with your tutor 5. End of quarter review of grades to determine whether or not to continue coaching 6. After last session complete an evaluation

Homework Help & Tutoring Struggling with homework? Get on tutor.com! 24/7 help available! (Seriously!) ALL Subjects Available Easy to use Can request the same tutor, if you prefer, or get a new one each time All tutors have a degree & are professionals All you need is a computer/tablet and an internet connection Can share photos of your assignments with the tutor All students have unlimited access for a full year. (Non UB students pay $40 per hour x 1 hour per week = $1,680 per year!)

Homework Help & Tutoring Wanting to learn independently in a different way than in the classroom? Check out Courseware (PLATO) All students have an account, but only 2 parking spaces available at one time ALL High School prep courses available, including Honors & AP Functions like an online class, but you can use at as a subject reference tool or a way to quiz yourself There is no teacher UB staff are teachers and do not check it regularly All you need is a computer/tablet and an internet connection

College Campus Visits 3 group campus visits scheduled each semester. Transportation provided to/from campuses. Individual Campus Visits with parents can be reimbursed Who Can Go on a College Visit? o Any student that gets the absence excused before the visit o Parents o Juniors & Seniors get priority when full, students get priority over parents Vehicle seating is limited to 5 students & 2 staff

College Visits What are steps to sign up for a college visit? 1. Sign up for it by calling Mary 2. Contact your school to get your absence excused for the day of the visit 3. Know basic information about the campus in order to ask meaningful questions. Let the voting begin!

Cultural Events Throughout the year Upward Bound offers a variety of cultural events to enhance our students learning experiences. Eligibility to go depends on your progress in UB and in your academics.

Student Leadership Group Juniors & Seniors only Will be helping shape the responsibilities and goals of JWCC UB s future Leadership Groups. Responsibilities CAN include things like: o o o o o o Planning social & cultural events (like a holiday party or movie night) Planning fundraisers (like Dodgeball tournament or Sleepout for Homelessness) Deciding how to celebrate TRIO day Presenting at academies Go to Leadership Conferences (yes, UB will take you!) Help UB staff make decisions on programming and policies If you are interested in getting involved, sign up today!

Academic Expectations Do your best!

Grades & GPA Expectations Good Academic Standing Is a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher from previous quarter, and all grades are at a C- or above. You are expected to remain in Good Academic Standing in the Program.

Grades & GPA Expectations Academic Watch Earned a grade below a C- in any of your courses or you have a quarter/ cumulative GPA of 2.5 or less on a 4.0 scale

Maintaining Academic Expectations Academic Watch What Happens When You Are Placed On Academic Watch? Student will be required to meet 1 hour per week with an academic coach during the rest of the quarter after the grade or GPA was received. Students who are on academic watch may not eligible to go on the fall or spring cultural trips or events.

Maintaining Academic Expectations Academic Watch What Happens When You Remain On Academic Watch After 1 Quarter Of Tutoring With LIMITED Improvement? Continue Academic Coaching. You may be required to meet with the UB Manager with your parent/guardian to develop additional strategies to improve your grades. Students who consistently remain on academic watch for 2 quarters or more may be determined not to be appropriate for the Upward Bound Program, if no improvement is being shown. The student may be terminated from the program and counseled to identify other resources.

Student Academics Your 4-Year High School College Subject English 4 Years Math 3 to 4 Years Science (with a lab) 3 years Foreign Language 2 years Preparatory Course Plan Classes Literature, Writing/Composition & Speech Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus and/or Statistics Including 1 full year each of at least 2 of: Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics Of the same language other than English Social Studies 3 U.S. History, U.S. Government and World History or Years Geography More Competitive colleges want to see 4 years each of Math, Lab Science and Social Studies and 3 or more years of Foreign Language.

Standardized Testing for College Test Prep Request an academic coach to get 1-on-1 assistance in preparing for the ACT or SAT this year. Ask your advisor to make the referral. Fee Waivers Upward Bound will provide fee waivers for up to 2 exams per student for ACT & SAT If Your School Does Not Offer a Test See your high school counselor to arrange to take it at another school.

Attendance UB Academy Conflict If you can t attend the UB Academy o You will receive a $45 stipend deduction o Unless you complete the makeup activity listed on our website Academic Coaching Session Conflicts If you can t attend an Academic Coaching Session o You ll get a $20 stipend deduction for each missed session o You need to notify your academic coach when you will be gone beforehand

Attendance Trip or Event that s NOT required That you already signed up for, but cannot attend o Let us know ASAP that you can t come. o You may receive a stipend deduction if you don t give us notice at least a few days before that you aren t coming. o We may have already purchased your meals, admission tickets & hotel room.

$ Stipends $ Starting Stipend Amount $90 Grades & GPA Your Quarter GPA: Tutoring: Was Tutoring Required This Quarter? Y N UB Scholars Attendance (Weekly Meetings) Deductions - $45 (You are at risk of losing $45 if your GPA is below a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and/or your grades in any of your classes fall below a C-. Demonstrating improvement in any class or GPA may allow you to still earn the $45. This amount is deducted based on the discretion of the advisor and program manager.) - $20 per missed tutoring session (regardless if tutoring was required or not) - $20 per missed meeting (You are allowed 1 excused absence per quarter, as long as it was communicated to your advisor before the missed meeting and you have a good reason.) UB Academy (Saturday - $45 per missed academy, if it was not made up and Sessions) missed for a good reason. Total Out of $90

Limit Your Hours Working a Job Do not work more than 12 hours per week o Your academic performance may start to decline o Keep your focus on your long-term future, not just short term gains o $9 per hour may seem great now, but 5 years from now, you will have wished you would ve done better in school to get scholarships o Work is NOT an excused absence for UB required activities it is your responsibility to yourself to ask off in advance for your already established commitments. If your employer won t honor your unavailable time, then you should reconsider where you would like to work.
