Overview Postsecondary attendance/completion is one of the five outcomes set forth by the Kansas State Board of Education for measuring the state s progress toward achieving Kansas vision for education Kansas leads the world in the success of each student. Recently, KSDE contracted with the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) to provide all Kansas high schools postsecondary data because it is important for schools to be able to track the postsecondary movement of high school graduates to determine if students are pursuing and succeeding in postsecondary education. This data includes the NSC complete student report, NSC building-level aggregate reports, as well as the postsecondary progress report for buildings and districts. Important Notes about NSC Data The complete student file and NSC Basic Report are generated by NSC. It is a resource for tracking the postsecondary progress of high school graduates and provides a comprehensive view of a student s collegiate experience. This data service is Family Educational Rights and Privacy ACT (FERPA) compliant (student opt-outs not included). Pulled from more than 3,300 collegiate institutions that enroll more than 93 percent of all U.S. higher education students. o The data does not include approximately 3 percent of students enrolled in a postsecondary institution that does not report to NSC. Data includes two-year, four-year, graduate, public/private, trade, vocational, etc., institutions in every state, D.C. and U.S. territories. o This system does not account for certificates or dual college credit students earn in high school. All NSC data represents student postsecondary enrollment after high school graduation. This system does not track students who earn a GED. Data will not include students NSC is unable to match due to data discrepancies. This system does not track students who enlist in the military or enter the workforce after high school graduation. This system does not track nondegree seeking students. This system does not include certifications earned by students in postsecondary graduate/completion percentages. The graduates represented in all data sets are those students who graduated within four years from an accredited Kansas high school with a regular high school diploma. The NSC Complete Student Report The complete student report provides individual student enrollment, graduation and degree details for each high school graduate. Detailed information is not available for students who are not found in the NSC database or who elected to place a FERPA block on their enrollment records. To access and download the NSC Complete Student Report, click on NSC Complete Student Report under the National Student Clearinghouse heading. The Complete Student NSC File page will load. A district or building level report may be downloaded into an excel spreadsheet by clicking on Generate Complete Student NSC Report. In this example, a district report will be downloaded. To choose a building level report, use the Please Select a School drop-down menu choice and choose the high school for which you wish to generate a report. NSC Complete Student File Specifications Column Field Name Description A Organization District number (example: D0100). B Building Building number (example: 1111). C State ID Student's unique state student identifier. D First Name Students' first name as collected in KIDS Collection records. E Middle Name Student's middle name as collected in KIDS Collection records. F Last Name Student's last name as collected in KIDS Collection records. G Name Suffix Student's name suffix as collected in KIDS Collection records. H Program Year The program year submitted to NSC (always one year after the year the student graduated from high school. A student who graduated in 2010 will have a program year of 2011). I College Sequence The sequential order of each school that the student attended. The enrollment records from the first school that the student attended will have a 1 in this field, enrollment records from the second school attended will have a 2 in this field, and so on. J Major If available, the major or program of study the student is enrolled in as provided by the reporting institution. K Degree Title If available, the title of the degree the student received as provided by the reporting institution. L Graduation Date Date of student s graduation or degree achievement as provided by reporting postsecondary institution. M Graduated Graduation status from the reporting institution. Y = Institution reported the student as graduated. N = Institution did NOT report the student as graduated. N Enrollment Status The last enrollment status reported for the student: F = Full-time H = Half-time L = Less than half-time Q = Three-quarter time A = Leave of absence W = Withdrawn D = Deceased *If the reporting institution has not defined the student s enrollment status as directory information, this field is blank. O Enrollment Begin Begin date for the student s period of attendance. P Enrollment End End date for the student s period of attendance. Q Public Private Indicates whether the postsecondary institution that the student attended is a public or private institution. R 2-year 4-year Type of postsecondary institution that the student attended: 4 = Four-year or higher institution 2 = Two-year institution L = Less than two-year institution S College State State in which the postsecondary institution that the student attended is located. The United States Postal Service state abbreviations are used. T College Name Name of the postsecondary institution that the student attended. U College Code Branch OPE/FICE code of the college the student attended. This is the six-digit college code, a hyphen, and then the two-digit branch code. V High School Grad Date High school graduation date of student. W High School Code ACT code of the high school from where the student graduated. NSC Complete Student File Specifications continued Column Field Name Description Y Ethnicity Indicates whether or not the student s ethnicity is Hispanic/Latino as reported to KIDS Collection. 0 = Not Hispanic/Latino 1 = Hispanic/Latino Z Race General racial category(ies) which most clearly reflects the individual s recognition of his or her community or with which the individual most identifies as reported to KIDS Collection. Positions: Position 5-White Position 4-Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander Position 3-Black or African-American Position 2-Asian Position 1-American Indian or Alaska Native Allowable values in each position: Pos. 5 Pos. 4 Pos. 3 Pos. 2 Pos. 1 White NH/PI Black Asian AI/AN 0 = No 1 = Yes AA Gender The student s gender as reported on KIDS Collection Records. 0 = Female 1 = Male AB SPED Indicator Indicates whether the student had an active Individual Education Plan (IEP) under the Individual with Disabilities Act (IDEA-Part B), which documents that the student received special education services as reported on KIDS Collection records. 0 = No disability 1 = Yes, student was on an IEP and received special education services. AC Migrant Indicator Indicates if the student was reported as an immigrant student on KIDS Collection records. 0 = No 1 = Yes AD Homeless Indicator Indicates if the student was reported as homeless on KIDS Collection records. 0 = No 1 = Yes AE EL Indicator Indicates if the student was reported as an English Learner (EL) student on KIDS Collection records. 0 = No 1 = Yes AF Free Reduced Lunch Indication of the student s eligibility for free or reduced-price lunch programs as reported on KIDS Collection records. 0 = Not eligible 1 = Eligible for reduced-price lunch 2 = Eligible for free lunch AG Exit Year Indication of the year the student graduated from high school. The NSC Basic Report The NSC Basic Report features charts and graphs indicating college enrollment, persistence and postsecondary graduation by your high school graduates for whom data was available in the NSC database. To access and download the NSC Basic Report, click on NSC Basic Reports under the National Student Clearinghouse heading. The NSC Basic Reports page will load. Understanding NSC Basic Reports continued Histograms o Postsecondary Enrollment and Progress Reports This report shows progress of a single class of students through postsecondary enrollment by academic year. You will receive one report for each graduating class beginning with the graduation class of 2010. o Reminder, this data does NOT include information for: Students who opt-out (FERPA). Students NSC is unable to match due to data discrepancies. Approximately 3 percent of students who are enrolled in a postsecondary institution that does not report data to NSC. Students earning a postsecondary certification. Defining the NSC Postsecondary Enrollment and Progress Report New to College: The green portion in the above report represents the percentage of 2010 high school graduates who are new to college or have enrolled for the first time. In the above example, 64.8 percent of the 2010 high school graduates enrolled in a postsecondary institution in the first year following high school. In the second year, 2011-2012, following high school 4.4 percent enrolled for the first time and so on through the 2015-2016 postsecondary school year. Not in NSC Data: The purple portion in the above report represents the percentage of 2010 high school graduates who are not included in the NSC database. In the above example: 34.6 percent of the 2010 high school graduates were not in the NSC database. Retained: The orange portion in the above report represents the percentage of 2010 high school graduates who enroll in postsecondary during the first year after graduating from high school AND continue to be enrolled in postsecondary in the following year. In the above example, for the 2011-2012 postsecondary school year: 49.7 percent of the 2010 high school graduates enrolled in postsecondary in 2010-2011 (green portion of chart) and enrolled in postsecondary in 2011-2012. Graduated: The magenta portion in the above report represents the percentage of 2010 high school graduates who have completed an associate s, bachelor s or higher degrree in a postsecondary institution (certifications NOT included). In the above example, 4.6 percent of the 2010 high school graduates earned a degree in the 2011-2012 postsecondary school year. By 2015-2016, 39.6 percent of the same high school graduates earned a postsecondary degree. o Note: Once a student is counted as a graduate, he or she is not counted again elsewhere in the report. No Longer Enrolled and Not Graduated: The yellow portion in the above report represents the percentage of 2010 high school graduates who were enrolled at some point in time in postsecondary but currently aren't enrolled and there is no record of earning a degree. In the above example, 11.5 percent of the 2010 high school graduates enrolled in postsecondary in the 2010-2011 school year but did not enroll in the 2011-2012 school year or earn a degree. Return After Stop Out: The blue portion in the above report represents the percentage of 2010 high school graduates who enrolled in postsecondary at a point in time, did not appear in postsecondary the following year and reappeared in a year thereafter. In the above example, 2 percent of the 2010 high school graduates returned to postsecondary in 2012-2013. The Postsecondary Progress Report The Postsecondary Progress Report is a report generated by KSDE to support the Kansas State Board of Education's postsecondary attendance/completion outcome for measuring the state s progress toward achieving Kansas vision for education Kansas leads the world in the success of each student. The data used to generate this report is the individual student data in the Complete Student Report from NSC. This report contains the following for the high school graduating classes of 2010-2014: Graduation Rate for each graduating class and a five-year average. Success Rate for each graduating class and a five-year average. Effective Rate for each graduating class and a five-year average. To view and download the Postsecondary Progress report, click on Postsecondary Progress under the National Student Clearinghouse heading. The Postsecondary Progress page will load and depending on district or building level user access, the district or building report will load onto the page. In this example the Class of 2010 has a graduation rate of 80.9 percent. The orange bar represents the success rate for a specific graduating class. In this example the Class of 2010 has a success rate of 55.1 percent. The blue bar represents the effective rate for a specific graduating class.
