Focus on Standards Description Setting Student Profile Community Profile Improvement Summary of Progress Resources Certified Staff Facilities Vital Signs Quality Survey Student Conduct Retention or Completion Address: p. 1 p. 1 p. 2 p. 3 p. 4 pp. 5-7 Hawaii State Assessment Program Other p. 8 Information Sunset Beach Elementary 59-360 Kamehameha Highway Haleiwa, Hawaii 96712 This report describes the school and its setting; provides information about the school's administrators, teachers, students and facilities; summarizes progress made based on the school's improvement plan, and reports student achievement results along with other vital signs. Description Sunset Beach Elementary serves preschool to sixth grade students on Oahu s North Shore. With the Ko olau Mountains in the background and Ehukai Beach Park in front, it is a picturesque, wellmaintained campus. Established in 1973, Sunset Beach, included in the Kahuku Complex, is the northernmost school in the Windward District. Facilities include a computer lab, library, two classroom buildings, a cafeteria/auditorium, an administration building and eighteen portable classrooms. The adjacent park provides basketball and tennis courts, as well as ample space for soccer, recess and physical education. The standards based academic program is enriched through differentiated classroom instruction, a concerted effort to infuse art and technology into our instructional practices and student products. Access to web-based instructional support for teachers and students accessed by students both at school and at home helps to extend their learning opportunities. The enrichment program for selected students in grades three-six focuses on Math Olympics, Science and Language Arts through use of various media. Our part-time music and art teachers are funded through the Parent Teacher Community Association (PTCA), and provides Pre K-6 students with music and art instruction. We strive to provide a warm, caring and supportive learning environment for all students. We emphasize respect for self, for others and taking responsibility for our actions. Comprehensive supports are offered to enable our students to become successful learners. Students report feeling safe and supported by dedicated school staff members. Our students have an opportunity to enjoy a variety of supplementary programs, activities, and to create lifelong friendships. An active PTCA, Community Council, and excellent community partnerships provide volunteer assistance and financial support to the school. Parents are encouraged to become involved in their child s education. Sunset Beach has received an Annual Achievement Award each year for meeting in good standing status under the federal No Child Left Behind requirements. Sunset Beach Elementary 12/11 Page 1 of 8

Status and Improvement Report Improvement Year -11 Summary of Progress Sunset Beach has exceeded the Adequate Yearly Progress criteria since the inception of this statewide NCLB measure. Each year classes have shown steady progress on the Hawaii State Assessments in Reading, Math, and Science. Our school academic goals include an objective to raise the proficiency levels of specific groups of underperforming students through additional tutoring and other supports. Grade level benchmarks are reflected in the instruction in each classroom with assessments aligned to the benchmarks. Students have been recognized with state science fair and media awards. Students at Sunset Beach have many opportunities to demonstrate success through programs that are supplementary to an outstanding classroom curriculum. Computer, library, music, art, Hawaiian Studies, science, math, and media enrichment programs are offered weekly. A partnership with the AINA in s program provides opportunities for all students to learn more about gardening, nutrition, and the 3 R s. Other special activities include a school musical, Surf Night, winter program, PE meet, Career Day, Health Fair, Family Fun Fair, talent show, and May Day celebration. After school activities include a student farmer s market, garden club, and ukulele classes. Working with students, staff, parents, and community partners, Sunset Beach has established a community that continues to strive to meet the needs of all learners.
