Perth High School Sports Newsletter January June 2015 School Sport Award Perth High School has recently been awarded the Gold School Sport Award. This is a new award which has been introduced by Sportscotland and so far only 35 secondary schools in Scotland have achieved Gold status. We are very proud of this achievement and look forward to being presented with a flag and certificate at the end of June. The award is in recognition of the school s achievements in putting quality physical education and school sport at the heart of its planning, practice and ethos. The gold award also highlights that our school has shown excellent practice across the core areas of the award including: physical education, school sport, leadership, pathways, celebrating sport, recognition and awards.
Perth & Kinross Indoor Hockey Tournament S1-S2 winners, retaining their trophy from last year. The team are pictured with Steven Dick, ex-gb Olympic and Commonwealth hockey player who came along to present the medals. Perth & Kinross District Hockey Congratulations to Rhiannon Nash (S2), Hamish Gellatly (S2) and Matthew McKenzie (S2) who have all been selected for the U14 Perth & District hockey squad. Midland District Hockey Hamish and Matthew have been selected for the U14 Midlands Boys Squad. Ruth Blaikie (S2) has been selected for the U14, U16 & U18 squads, and brother Jamie Blaikie is in the U16 squad. Ruth and Jamie have also been picked for the U16 Scotland Squad. Ruth plays in Ireland in June and Jamie has played in Holland earlier in the year.

S4 S6 Boys Basketball Congratulations to the S4-S6 boys basketball team who are the Perth & Kinross League Cup winners. They beat Perth Grammar School 70-41 in the final, which was played at North Inch Community Campus. Rock Challenge A team of 65 pupils and 4 teachers from Perth High School took part in the Rock Challenge Event that took place in the Caird Hall in Dundee. Pupils choreographed and designed the costumes, set and makeup. The team placed 3 rd overall and also won a number of awards due to the dedication, impact, professionalism and overall stage craft. Well done to everyone who took part as the performance and dancing was superb! A huge thanks to Miss Davies, Mrs Carcary, Mr Struth and Miss Gennings for their immense efforts across the year to prepare pupils for this event. Thank you to all staff, parents and pupils who helped to fundraise, build the sets and help with other aspects of the event preparation.

Cashback 7 s Girls Football Tournament Perth High girls football team played in their first ever match and tournament in March at North Inch Community Campus. The team finished 3 rd after drawing 4 games, winning one and narrowly losing the other. Rugby Congratulations to the S1/S2 team above who won the Perthshire Rugby Tournament in March winning 3 games out of 3. The S3/S4 rugby team were 3 rd in the Perth & Kinross Festival in March
Perth High School Volleyball Club Live Active S5 core PE pupils, with Dave Angus, Live Active Leisure, who delivered Strength and Conditioning sessions to pupils during their fitness block at Bell s Sports Centre.
British Schools Gymnastics Finals Ellie Magee (S1), Maisie Jackson (S1), Iona Jackson (S2), Charlotte Cobb (S2) & Katie Gregory (S2) had a very successful year. The girls came 1 st at U14 level in the British Schools Gymnastics heats in January 2015 and qualified for the British Schools Gymnastics finals in Stoke-on-Trent. The girls performed very well on the day and finished in 8 th place. Thank you to the school, parents and coaches for your input which has enabled the girls to compete in Stoke.
Rugby Selection Congratulations to Alasdair Collie (S3) who has been selected for the U16 BT Scottish Rugby Academy Regional squad training programme for the Caledonia Pathway. MotoGP Rory Skinner has been racing in the CEV at Jerez in the Moto3 class event and currently lies 7 th in the Spanish Championship and is only 2 points off 5 th place. The S1/S2 hockey team retained the regional league cup. They are now undefeated for 2 years both indoor and outdoor. An outstanding achievement. Well done team!
Volleyball Perth High School had 2 teams participating in the P&K schools volleyball tournament at Bell s Sports Centre in May. The S2 team were 2 nd and the S3 s finished 3 rd in their age category. Both teams enjoyed participating in what was a fun and friendly atmosphere. School Sport Coaching Project 23 senior pupils from Perth High School took part in the School Sport Coaching Project during the Easter holidays at NICC and in June at Bell s Sports Centre. Pupils undertook a total of 49 introductory governing body awards and as a result will support after-school and community clubs in the new academic year. First Aid Congratulations to the following pupils who have completed their first aid course this academic year: Tommy Adams, Jamie Johnston, Louise McGregor, Catriona Gellatly, Shannon McGrath, Heather Davies, Emily Duff, Kathryn Sandilands and Charlie Reid. Saltire Award Well done to Heather Davies for completing the 10 hour Saltire Award Community Sports Leader Award 9 pupils completed their CSLA Award, they are: Claire McGhee, Charlie Swan, Louise Webster, Angus Mailer, Simon Jardine, Emily Duff, Charlie Reid, Kathryn Sandilands and Heather Davies.

Cumbrae Trip 11 pupils attended a sailing trip to Cumbrae in June. All pupils were given the opportunity to sail different types of boats as well as enjoying other activities on the island such as cycling. As you can see from the pictures below pupils experienced all Scottish seasons!
Sports Day Sports Day was held at the George Duncan Athletics Arena on Wednesday 10 th June. The winning house was Elcho with 1127.5 points followed by Kinfauns with 686, Balmano with 586.5, Huntingtower with 526.5 and Pitheavlis with 512.5. Congratulations to all pupils who took part on what was a beautiful sunny day!
Champions in Schools Once again Perth High School pupils benefited from the Champions in Schools programme. This year our champion was Keith Cook, former British Champion and Commonwealth Games medallist. Keith has represented GB in 5 World Championships and European Championships. Pupils learned about how you can gain success through sustained effort, understanding failure and how you can learn from this and overcome adversity. Scottish Schools Swimming Relay Championships Perth High School had a girls team competing in the Scottish Schools event at Tollcross pool in Glasgow. Hannah Michie, Freya Thomson, Morven Rough, Kirsty Pitts and Katrin Rough competed in an open age group and narrowly missed out on reaching the finals. Alison Wilson Awards Perth High S1/S2 hockey team and Perth High Gymnastics Team were awarded joint 2 nd place in the Alison Wilson Secondary School Sport Team Award 2014-2015. Each team have received a prize of 150. Congratulations! Perth High School PTA We would like to thank the PTA who provide funds to support our extracurricular clubs. This year we have received money to purchase new display boards for the PE department, senior pupil coaches t-shirts, football socks and kit bag for the S3 team, gymnastics leotards, hockey balls as well as other equipment.
Sports Prize-Giving Our sports prize-giving took place on Tuesday 9 th June. Congratulations to Rory Skinner who won the Sports Personality of the Year Award and to Alice Illingworth and Erynn Legge who were joint winners of the Outstanding Services to School Sport award.
Scottish Schools Canoe Slalom Championships Isla Kelly (S4), Megan Fletcher (S4), Ben Kelly (S2), Sophie Fletcher (S2), Reece MacKintosh (S2) and Sandy Malcom (S2) all represented Perth High School in the canoe slalom event and came 4 th. In the individual categories Isla Kelly was 2 nd Junior 18 and brother Ben Kelly 3 rd Junior 14. Thank You We would like to thank all staff, pupils and volunteers who take school teams providing opportunities for pupils. Thank you also to staff that drive mini-buses taking pupils to fixtures. It is not possible to capture every aspect of sporting life at Perth High School or all pupil achievements.
