ATHLETICS 2012-2013 Students, Parents, and Guardians It s time! The 2012-2013 athletic season is here and we have some important information to share with you. Please be sure to read through this document as it will hopefully provide both a guide to registering, and information on our athletic programs. There will be a Fall Sports Meeting at The International School of Minnesota s Leila C. Saad Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, August 7 at 7:00PM. In order to reduce our environmental footprint, and improve efficiencies, we will start the transition to online registration. Fall registration will be split into two separate registration documents and these documents can be found on our school website under the Campus Life tab. The URL is: http://ism-sabis.net/campus-life/athletics/default.aspx Contact Information: Turner Neal ISM Athletic Director tneal@ism-sabis.net 952-918-1833 Joel Carufel ISM Assistant Athletic Director jcarufel@ism-sabis.net 952-918-1800 ext. 610 Riley Hoffman ERA Athletic Director rhoffman@eagleridgeacademy.org One of these, the Registration Form, is a PDF that can be completed online and should be emailed to Athletic Director Turner Neal. The Registration Form will be used to compile rosters and contact information so that our students, parents, coaches, and administration can have open lines of communication on Day 1. If you have issues completing this form online, please contact Mr. Neal about registering via other means. The second document is the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Eligibility Brochure. Students in grades 7 through 12 must complete one brochure per academic year. This document must be printed and completed manually and turned in to your school s respective office. Additionally, the MSHSL requires every student grades 7 through 12 to have a physical completed and turned into the school every three years. This would mean that incoming 7 th graders and 10 th graders will need a physical. Please be aware of this requirement! Contact your school s athletic director to inquire about your status.

Mission Statement and Policy Highlights The mission of The International School of Minnesota athletics is to provide a top quality athletic experience to our diverse student body, while preparing them for lifelong success by building the skills necessary for an ethical, moral and healthy character. WE BELIEVE THAT Participation in school athletic programs is a privilege and not a right. Sportsmanship needs to have a constant presence in all school-based athletic programs. Success is transferrable across different fields. Ethical behavior, dignity and respect are expected and non-negotiable. Collaborative relationships with parents enhance The School's opportunity to positively impact student success. Academic priorities must come before participation in athletic activities. Positive role models and an active involvement in a student's life by parents and others are critical to student success. High school athletic programs are designed for student participants, and adults must serve in a supportive role. The success of the team is more important than individual honors. Compliance with school, community and Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) rules is essential for all activity participants. Participation in school-sponsored athletics must be inclusive, not exclusive. Ethical behavior, fairness, and embracing diversity best serve students and school communities. Policy Highlights Academics and family take priority over athletics Be aware of the time demands and commitments of the activity Attendance is taken into consideration when determining playing time Students may not play until cleared by the Athletic Director A student will automatically become ineligible for Athletics if they are failing a course. Grades will be compiled on a weekly basis. The student must then be certified eligible by the Upper School Academic Quality Controller (AQC). This will happen if the student brings the grade out of the failing range, or by developing and following an academic plan set in conjunction with the Student Management Coordinator (SMC), the US AQC, and parents, which will allow them to spend the proper amount of time studying to ensure academic success. Students may not use, or be in possession of, chemicals including alcohol, tobacco, or any other controlled substance from the first signing of the Student Eligibility Brochure. There are stiff punishments for violations. The entire Athletic Handbook is available on our Athletics homepage

CUB SOCCER The Cub team will practice two days per week (see schedule). The team will play games on Saturday mornings and there is the potential of postseason opportunities. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from games. A game schedule will be provided by SSYO near the end of August. The focus of the Cub program is technical development and ball mastery. The goal is to teach the fundamentals and have every student exit the program with knowledge of how to dribble, pass, receive, and shoot the ball. Individual and team defense will also be a focus. MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCCER The Middle School team will practice three days per week (see schedule). The team will participate in the SSYO Varsity league and will be defending their title as 2011 Champions. Games will be held throughout the week and are determined by SSYO. A schedule will be provided by SSYO near the end of the August. The focus of Middle School soccer is to build on the technical foundation built at the Cub level and begin to learn more tactical elements of the game. Focuses will be on fitness, technique, and a mental understanding of the game. HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER High School soccer will be split into two distinct teams: Junior Varsity (JV) and Varsity (V). Both teams will practice five times per week with the chance of also practicing or playing games on Saturdays. The JV will play a number of games but are not involved in league play. The V team is a member of the EMAC and will also play a non-conference schedule. The V team also participates in MSHSL Section play. BOYS SOCCER The boys soccer program has a history of success. The high school program competes in both the Eastern Minnesota Athletic Conference (EMAC), and the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL). The Huskies have solely, or jointly won two conference championships in the past four years and look to continue in that fashion. The program will also feature two youth teams competing in the South Side Youth Organization (SSYO), which pairs the teams up against more local public and private schools. The Middle School team will be entering the SSYO league as defending champions. The boys soccer program has several returning coaches including head varsity coach Turner Neal and middle school/jv coach Aaron Van Hout, who will be entering their sixth and fifth seasons, respectively, with the Huskies. Teams We anticipate teams at the following levels: Cub (4-6) Middle School (7-8) Junior Varsity (9-12)

The team will participate in the SSYO Varsity league. The team will also play nonconference games against other local teams. HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER Girls high school soccer will have two distinct schedules for a JV team and a V team. However, the ability to have two distinct practices under two different coaches will be determined by the number of registrations. Teams will practice five times per week with the chance of also practicing or playing games on Saturdays. The JV will play a number of games but are not involved in league play. The varsity team will play a non-conference schedule that includes section opponents, and other area public and private schools. GIRLS SOCCER The girls soccer program plays an entire nonconference schedule, as the EMAC does not currently support girls soccer. The girls will play against several conference schools this year as they begin to create girls programs. The girls program will return all three coaches (Tom Schmidt, High School; Sarah Totall, Middle School; Michelle Olsen, Cub), which is an exciting prospect as the stable program will accelerate development. Teams We anticipate teams at the following levels: Cub (4-6) Middle School (7-8) High School (9-12) Junior Varsity (9-12) Varsity (9-12)

Future of Volleyball: 2013: Add MS Volleyball 2014: Add LS Volleyball GIRLS VOLLEYBALL The girls volleyball program is only available for grades seven through twelve (7-12) and is a varsity only sport. The volleyball team competes in the Eastern Minnesota Athletic Conference (EMAC). The team is known for its dedicated and driven players who show a true passion for the game. The team is looking to expand and is seeking new members! The International School of Minnesota is still in the hiring process for the head coach of the volleyball team. Although the volleyball team is relatively new, The International School of Minnesota hopes to continue to expand the program and have the team play a bigger part in the overall athletic program. Games are generally mid-week and a schedule is available on our emaconference.org site. There is the opportunity for post-season play in volleyball.
