CHARACTER CONFIDENCE KNOWLEDGE

Education is all a matter of building bridges. Ralph Ellison The Bridges Academy s mission is to treat students as individuals helping them to fully realize their academic and social potential. Our student body is multicultural and richly diverse with students from many ethnic, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds, which reflects the global environment our students will enter. The Bridges Academy is a place of discovery where students come together to deepen and value their shared experience. We offer a nurturing environment with a teaching staff dedicated to preparing students for life in an interdependent world. Our comprehensive program lays the foundation for a lifetime of learning and achieving.

LOWER SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL (Kindergarten through 8th Grade)

www.thebridgesacademy.net SMALL CLASS SIZES Research supports that students learn more in smaller groups where the teacher can have one-on-one time with the students. The Bridges Academy caps our class sizes to ensure the most productive learning environment possible. DIVERSE STUDENT BODY Our student body is diverse to represent the real world and gives children the opportunity to learn from each other s ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. FOREIGN LANGUAGES We believe that foreign language should be taught at a young age when students brains are wired for language development. The Bridges Academy teaches French starting in nursery school and by graduation our students are ranked in the top percentiles on Long Island and nationally. We also have implemented Mandarin to our curriculum. Mandarin will become increasingly important in the 21st century and beyond, while French remains the second most frequently taught language in the world after English and a gateway to all romance languages. SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS AND STEM Providing a strong Science and Mathematics Program is at the forefront of The Bridges Academy. Robotics curriculum and labs are integrated into the courses to enhance our students learning. The Bridges Academy embraces the principles of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to prepare our students for the future demands for these skill sets in the workplace. The Bridges Academy has entered into several partnerships to enhance learning. The Webb Institute of Naval Architecture is working with us to give our students hands-on experience designing, building and testing underwater robots. The Russian School of Mathematics offers award-winning on-premise programs which help children strengthen their math skills and critical thinking. PUBLIC SPEAKING Public speaking is as much an art as it is a science. For our students to be able to communicate their views and thoughts, to convince, persuade and energize others, they must do more than simply read a text. When we teach students to speak more effectively and understand the basic principles of public speaking we help them to make a difference in the world around them.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM The Bridges Academy believes our students need to prepare to compete in a global economy. We enrich our students education with world studies including international days, field trips and partnerships. TECHNOLOGY The Bridges Academy has a state-of-the-art computer facility and uses online multimedia authoring tools such as Scratch, designed by MIT Media Lab to teach students how to program which prepares them for the more advanced world of computer design and programming. Macs and ipads are utilized by all grades and classes. FINE ARTS, MUSIC AND DRAMA The Bridges Academy offers a variety of programs in Fine Arts, Music and Drama. Each student has many opportunities and is encouraged throughout the year to participate and perform in concerts, plays and art shows. ETHICS AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT The Bridges Academy offers a unique environment where students are exposed to mindfulness programs and character development recognizing acts of kindness and consideration. Students are active in community outreach programs to give back to their community. GREENHOUSE The Bridges Academy benefits from having a large greenhouse on school grounds. It is an organic, dirt-under-the-fingernails space where students have the unique opportunity to visit and work in the garden as part of their lessons and after school activities. SPORTS The Bridges Academy offers a full-size gym with a variety of sports programs to keep children active and fit and to promote healthy competition and team involvement. The Bridges Academy also has an active interscholastic soccer and basketball team. Our middle school participates in a track and cross-country program. ADVANCED COURSEWORK Eighth grade students have the opportunity to take advanced placement level Science and Mathematics classes in preparation for high school. AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES The Bridges Academy offers a variety of after school activities for students including Art, Drama, Gymnastics, Stock Market, Dance, Soccer, Robotics, Basketball,Yearbook, Track, Magazine, Mandarin, Honor Society, NYSSMA program, Lego and Newspaper. www.thebridgesacademy.net

EARLY LEARNING CENTER

ACADEMICALLY FOCUSED The Bridges Academy Early Learning programs are geared to lay the cornerstone for learning. Children are eager to learn at a young age and our program focuses on developing a love for learning. Since Bridges has a K-8 th program, the early learning programs have access to our Computer Lab, Library, Greenhouse, Music, Art, Gym, Mandarin and our award-winning French program. SMALL CLASS SIZES WITH TEACHER AND ASSISTANT Young children need extra attention and a nurturing and supportive environment. Our classes have a teacher and an assistant to enrich a child s development and provide more creativity and fun. CONFIDENCE AND CHARACTER SKILLS With small classes, teachers have the time to reinforce children s confidence and are able to teach and acknowledge acts of kindness and consideration. These are tools that children will use throughout their lives. CREATIVITY AND PLAY Sparking creativity and playing with others is also a key element in our program. We foster children s creativity through Art and Science projects, reading and games. Team building and social dynamics are developed through games and sports. We have an indoor and outdoor playground to keep children active. AFTERNOON ENRICHMENT PROGRAM AND CLUBS Children can continue their program at The Bridges Academy in the afternoon for enrichment which includes additional activities for learning and fun. Clubs include Dance, Music, Gymnastics, Lego and Art. CULTURAL ARTS Throughout the year, The Bridges Academy Parents Association provides special events and programs to enrich the children s learning.
