NOTES FROM THE NURSE News from the Nurse s office January 2017 Attention parents of current 3 rd, 5 th and 11 th grade students: Plan for Next school year: If your student will be in the following grades for the 2017-2018 school year you need to update records for the health clinic.4 th grade: All 4 th grade student need to submit an updated school physical form to the clinic. This also serves as their clearance for elementary sports. 6 th grade: All incoming 6 th grade students will need immunizations prior to the first day of school. 6 th grade students should have a meningitis and Tdap (tetanus and pertussis) vaccine. Submit updated immunization records to the health clinic. 12 th grade: All seniors will need a 2 nd meningitis vaccine prior to the first day of school. Submit updated immunization records to the health clinic. Please bring updated physical forms and immunization records to the health clinic or to registration for the 2017-18 school year. Asthma: If your family has anyone that has an asthma diagnosis please see the attached documents from Juan Carlos Ramirez -Dorronsoro PhD. He is assistant professor of Air Pollution Assessment and Control and Indiana Joint Asthma Coalition Chair of the Environmental Committee. His department is offering free in home air quality assessments. Please see the three attachments for more information. Illnesses: Please remember to report to the clinic any contagious illnesses. You may contact the clinic via phone: 765-285- 8640 or email: hlchalfant@bsu.edu This allows us to begin deep cleaning in areas of concern and to monitor the spread of the illness. Things such as Hand Foot and Mouth can cause complications to pregnant women. Please report illnesses such as: pink eye, hand foot and mouth, impetigo, MRSA, head lice, ringworm, scabies, strep throat or scarlet fever, gastrointestinal Medications: Please remember that PARENTS should bring medications to the clinic. Students are not to bring medications to the clinic. Parents must sign a medication administration form for OTC medications to be administered. Prescription Medications: Should have a note from the physician with student s name, directions and have a signature. Pharmacy labels are NOT a signed order. Parent completes the administration form. Prescription medications MUST have a SIGNED physician order. All medications must be in the original pharmacy bottle. 2

The kindergarten students have turned into paleontologists and have created GREAT research projects about dinosaurs!! 4

These students will represent Burris at the East Central Indiana Regional Science Fair on February 18 at Ball State University. We are Burris proud of their hard work and wish them much luck as they compete at regionals! Congratulations to our Middle School Science Fair participants. Rory Powers received Honorable Mention. Hazel Crow and Taylor Daniels will represent Burris at the Regional Science Fair in February. 6

These 8th grade students created masquerade masks in preparation for reading Act 1, scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet. The class wore their masks while reading the scene, which takes place at a masquerade ball. 8

News From the Athletic Director Parents our Future Owls Cheer Clinic will start on February 7 8, 2017 with their performance at halftime of the JV game on February 9, 2017. This clinic is available to all students in grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Congratulations to Junior Gymnast Taylor Burhans for being selected as the Star Press Athlete of the Week. Taylor is the first gymnast in school history and finished in first place at the Plymouth Invite. 11
LIBRARY NEWS Lost and Found Items The lost and found items are overflowing in the library workroom! There are at least 30 coats, jackets and sweats. You can look through the items anytime between 7:30 am- 4:00 pm each day. Here are pictures of some of the items. 12
