New Pharmaceutical Sciences Program UMass Lowell is the first public university in Massachusetts to offer graduate degree programs in pharmaceutical sciences. The new master's and doctoral degrees are designed to meet the growing demand for pharmaceutical scientists who discover, develop, test and manufacture medications. Courses in the programs will begin September 2014 and applications are currently being accepted. Read the announcement. Environmental Health Students Get Food Composting Started on Campus Environmental health students Kelly Rusch and Tiffany Blake helped get a food composting program started on campus. Under the pilot program introduced at the start of the semester, table scraps and food waste from the kitchen are being collected, pulped and transported to a local farm for composting. In the first month of the program, an average of 526 pounds of food waste was readied for composting each day, for a total of 15,780 pounds, or nearly 8 tons, for the month. Read more. Students Get Head Start in Bring Diversity to Nursing Program Freshmen nursing students in the Bring Diversity to Nursing (BDN) program attended a three-day summer program in the new Health and Social Sciences Building that got them comfortable with the University, the new building and each other. "The summer program helped me get ready for college by giving me tips on how to study and where to go for help and tutoring," says Kevin Nduati, who graduated from Lowell High School in 2013. Read more. View welcome reception photos.

The Power of Equine Therapy UMass Lowell's high-merit students are undertaking innovative research projects as part of the University's Co-Op Scholars Program. Exercise physiology major Haily O'Malley is collaborating with Windrush Farm in North Andover to provide young people with various physical, emotional, behavioral and cognitive challenges the option of hippotheraphy and therapeutic horseback riding. "I've always been interested in rehabilitative forms of therapy using animals and horses," she says. Read more about the co-op scholars program. Nutritional Sciences Student and Veteran Wins 'Hackathon' Prize Nutritional Sciences student and veteran Justin Mayhew teamed up with three computer science students to develop an application called that enables soldiers to better understand and manage their combat nutrition requirements. The team was awarded top honor during the first-ever DoD mobile app "hackathon" event organized by the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research Lab. UMass Lowell beat 10 other teams of programmers, or "hackers," to win the $3,000 grand prize. Read more.
