I would like to welcome everyone back to school, especially all the new families joining our community, for what will be a very exciting year for everyone connected to Coburg West Primary School. This year our school celebrates its Centenary Year. There are many exciting events being planned to celebrate 100 years of quality education at CWPS. Start of school We should all be proud of the way our 504 students have settled in the 21 classes across our school this year, especially the 86 Foundation students, who have so eagerly begun their school life with us at CWPS. They are all so keen and ready to learn, as are all students throughout the school. As I wander through the corridors, in and out of classrooms, it is pleasing to see our students engaged in their learning. School Council Elections Here at Coburg West Primary School the community have an important role in making our school what it is. There are many ways community members can become involved and one of those is to become a school council member. The school council play an important part in the governance of our school. Each school council member is appointed for a set tenure and each year a number of members reach the end of their tenure. As such this provides the opportunity for members to retire, renominate or for new members to nominate for a vacancy. This year, we have four parent vacancies.

We welcome any members of our parent community who feel they would like to nominate themselves or another member of our community for such an important role in our school, to collect a nomination form from the office. Nominations open today, Friday 10th February and completed Nomination Forms must be delivered to the office by 4pm on Friday 17th February. If we receive more nominations than there are vacancies, then a ballot will be held where we will ask every family to vote. The timeline for this school council election process is as follows; Friday 10th February Friday 17th February Wednesday 22nd February Friday 3rd March Thursday 9th March Wednesday 22nd March - Call for nominations - Nominations close - Date by which the list of candidates and nominators posted Distribute ballot papers (if required) - Close of Ballot - Declaration of the Ballot - First meeting of the new School Council Reminders As the school year begins, I must take this opportunity to remind all parents of the following; Pick up and Drop off I ask everyone to be mindful of the parking restrictions around our school. Also, the Drop off Zones are clearly that, a place to drop off or Pick Up your children and drive away. I have had complaints about people parking in the Drop Off Zones and walking into the school grounds. There is also a concern about the amount of parents and students entering the school grounds through the staff carparks. These entry points are clearly marked and are not safe for pedestrians. Uniform Given that we are just starting the school year, it is an expectation that all students are in full school uniform. Blue jeans, denim shorts, short shorts, thongs and sandals are not part of our school uniform. Please ensure that your children are wearing the appropriate items. You can check our policy and uniform list at the following link to our website: http://www.cobw.vic.edu.au/community/policies/uniform Or to see the pictures on our supplier s website: https://www.aplusschoolwear.com.au/ SunSmart As a SunSmart school, all children are required to wear a wide brimmed hat at all times when outdoors during Term 1 and Term 4. Please ensure that your child has an appropriate hat to wear and that it is clearly labelled with their name. School Term Dates Please note the Term Dates for 2017 Term 1 Feb 1 to March 31 Term 2 April 18 to June 30 Term 3 July 17 to September 22 Term 4 October 9 to December 22 Holiday works Through the holidays we had electricians from Cherry Energy Solutions in the school converting our lighting to LED. This conversion will have a positive impact on our energy bills and also benefit the environment. Thank you to Sean Powell and members of the Sustainability Group who worked on this project.

Birdcage At the end of last year we put out a call for volunteers to care for our birds. I wish to thank Elvira who has taken on this responsibility. If there are any other parents/families that would like to assist, please contact the office. AFL Schools Yesterday some of our students from Grades 1/2 and 5/6 had the pleasure of meeting and developing their football skills with players from the Carlton Football Club. As part of the AFL Players Appearance Program, 6 players answered questions from the students and gave them tips and pointers to improve their handball and kicking skills. See the photos that follow. On behalf of many very excited students (and many more staff members) we thank Mr Harvey and Mrs Osman for planning and facilitating this footy clinic. I wish you all a wonderful fortnight until the next Newsletter. Kind regards, Mark Colagrande Principal
