Summer Learning Program Schedule The HCPS High School Summer Learning program will begin on Monday, July 9 and end Thursday, August 2 nd. School will be closed on Fridays. Class begins daily at 7:30 am and ends at 11:30 am. A graduation ceremony will be held on August 2, 2018 at 10 am at Patterson Mill High School for all eligible students. Tuition will be collected through MySchoolBucks and will be due by June 28. 2018 Tuition Rates Full Price $350 Approved Reduced Meals $150 Approved Free Meals Free

Summer Learning Program Attendance Requirement Students are expected to attend the Summer Learning Program every day. Absences and lateness must be avoided because of the limited time available for each course. Any student with an unexcused absence will not be permitted to make up missed work in The Summer Learning Program. A VACATION, with or without parental consent, is considered an unexcused absence. Summer Learning Program Registration Procedures for registering for The High School Summer Learning Program are listed below. Schedule an appointment with the school counselor or Summer Learning Program Site Coordinator. Complete the HCPS High School Summer Learning Program Registration Packet. Registration Packets will be available at your child s home school beginning May 1, 2018. Return the registration packet to the Summer Learning Program Site Coordinator no later than June 5 th to reserve a spot. Several criteria must be determined prior to enrollment in the course. Once the student returns the registration packet, office staff must check the request and determine if the course is still open. The following criteria will be utilized in determining course enrollment. 1. Current seniors and incoming seniors will be given top priority to enroll in the course. 2. Students failing the High School Assessment will be given first priority in the hybrid courses. 3. Students on the Wait List will be notified by phone on July 10 th if there is an opening at the desired location. The Registration Packet must be returned to the Summer Learning Program Site Coordinator by June 5, 2018. Failure to complete the Registration Packet by this date will cause the student to forfeit his/her spot in the HCPS High School Summer Learning Program.

Parent/Guardian Communication Student progress will be communicated to parents weekly. Any concerns should be directed first to the classroom teacher and then the site coordinator. Diplomas Students who complete graduation requirements during the HCPS High School Summer School program receive diplomas August 2, 2018. A graduation ceremony and reception for students and parents will be held at Patterson Mill High School at 10:00 am.

Summer Learning Courses for Recovery Credit A recovery credit course is designed for students in grades 9-12 who have previously failed one of the courses listed below. A recovery credit course may not be taken for original credit. The following courses will be offered through a combination of teacher instructed and selfdirected online learning. All classes will be led by a content certified teacher, who will deliver direct instruction, at least 20% of the time. For the remainder of the time, students will be expected to independently participate in self-directed online learning. Summer Learning Courses for Online Original Credit Courses Upon MSDE approval, original credit courses will be announced as they become available.

Summer Learning Courses for Face-to-Face Credit Recovery Course A face-to-face credit recovery course is designed for students in grades 9-12 who did not pass the specified courses and/or the respective Maryland High School Assessment. A credit recovery course may not be taken for original credit. All classes will be led by a content certified teacher who will deliver direct instruction including but not limited to, drills, classwork, homework, tests, quizzes, and projects. Upon completion of the course, those students who need to pass a state mandated assessment will sit for the exam. This class will meet from 7:30-2:30 Mon-Thurs and will require students to work online on Fridays.

Bridge Plan for Academic Validation The Maryland State Department of Education has developed an alternative path to assisting students in meeting the Maryland High School Assessment requirement. The Bridge Plan for Academic Validation employs project based learning to ensure every student has an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and skills related to the state standards. Students enrolled in the Summer Bridge program must have: English II Passed English 10 and 11 and Is a rising senior and Has failed the PARCC examine 2 or more times. Algebra I Passed Algebra I course and Is a rising junior or senior and Failed PARCC two or more times. Students cannot enroll in Bridge and an accredited course simultaneously. They can only enroll in one section of the Summer Learning Program.
