SCHOOL SONG SCHOOL BADGE AND MOTTO DESIGNER: MR OTTO HEUNIS The silver lines and the light blue background symbolises the sea across which our pre-desessors sailed to this land. The stars were used to show them the way, while the anchor of faith also in our Heavenly Father, is our source of strength and also the basis of our Christian Education. 4

OUR SCHOOL Charlo Primary School concists of a Pre School section, Pre-Primary and Grade R, a Main Stream section, Grade 1 to 7 and one SNE Class. Charlo Primary School is a parallel medium school which opened its doors in January 1973 with Mr O B Heunis as the first Principal. Mr J R Viljoen was appointed in March 1974 and retired in 1992. Mr A A E van Schalkwyk was appointed from January 1993 to March 1995. Our present principal, Mr J McLeod was appointed in July 1995. At present there are over 570 learners attending our school. The number of learners per class varies. The average, however, appears to be 32 learners per class. There is one class for every grade in both the English and Afrikaans stream except the SNE and Pre-Primary Class. STAFF The staff consists of a Principal, a Deputy, 4 Heads of Department, 21 teachers, 4 Student Teachers and 1 Part Time Teacher for Xhosa. The administration of the school is in the hands of 3 Secretaries, while two Caretakers, assisted by 6 workers, are in charge of maintenance and the cleaning of the school. PRE-SCHOOL SECTION We have two Grade R classes, (1 Afrikaans and 1 English Class) and 2 Pre-Primary classes, Duel Medium). These classes are administered and financed solely by the school. The Departmental syllabus is followed. PROGRESS REPORT Parents will receive a Progress Report at the end of each term. Reporting to parents on progress, takes place twice a year by appointment. Should your child not have reached the required level, it is not his/her fault. It merely means that he/she needs time to develop. DIDACTICAL AID TEAM Didactical assistance is given to learners who may have, for some reason, fallen behind in their concepts of Spelling, Written Communication, Reading and Mathematics and yet do not require full time Remedial Aid. Therapists are available at your own cost. 5

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES Junior and Senior Choir, Speech and Drama, Orators Debating Society, SCA, Chess, Entrepreneurs Club,School newspaper as well as an Orff Ensamble. PRE-SCHOOL GROUP EXTRA MURAL ACTIVITIES Sport coaching for the Grade R group is done during school hours. Additional activities for the Pre-School Group at additional costs: Monkeynastix during school hours in Free Play Time Art classes on certain afternoons from 15:00 to 17:00 (Contact the School for more information.) Computer courses are also presented at school to talented learners and parents after hours. 6

AFTER CARE CENTRE We also have an after care centre on our school premises. This is administered and financed by the school. Learners are in very good hands and great care is taken in assisting learners with their homework. PARENT TEACHERS ASSOCIATION The school boasts a very active P.T.A. All parents are automatically members of the P.T.A. The main purpose of the P.T.A. is to create opportunities where parents and teachers can meet formally and/or socially. The other function of the P.T.A. is to raise funds for the school in order to improve and maintain the facilities at our school. SUPPORTER ASSOCIATION The School boasts a very strong supporters association. The sole purpose of the association is to promote parent involvement and to raise funds for Sport and Cultural Activities. BOOKS Parents pay school fees per year as set out by the Governing Body and agreed upon by the parents. Parents are responsible for the purchase of the prescribed stationery as well as a calculator and geometry set, where applicable. Parents will be informed about the list of additional requisites. SCHOOL FEES The greater part of the income of the school is derived from the parents, in the form of school fees. This is essential for the smooth running of the school. School fees are reviewed annually. TUCK SHOP The tuck shop is a private enterprise. All products are affordable and prove to be of a very high quality. The tuck shop is open during break times and after school for business. PRE-SCHOOL GROUP Pre-primary learners are invited to buy from our pre-school tuck shop every Friday. Please ensure that your child brings his/her money in a marked money bag. In doing this the learners learn to handle their own money. The use of the tuck shop is not compulsory. 7

PRE-SCHOOL GROUP: DAILY ROSTER The School starts every morning at 08:00 and closes at 12:00 for the Pre- Primary Group. The Grade R learners close at 12:30. MAINSTREAM The school starts at 08:00 and closes in the afternoon at 13:30 for the Grade 1 and 2 learners and at 14:10 for Grade 3 to 7 learners. First break is from 10:15-10:35 and second break is from 12:35-12:50 from Mondays to Thursdays. On Fridays school starts at 08:00 but closes at 13:10 for all learners EXCEPT Grade 3 learners who close at 12:25. Break on Fridays is from 10:25 to 10:55. Sport commences straight after school. (A Sport roster is handed out to pupils at the beginning of the summer season and again at the start of the winter season) LEARNING AREAS Languages Mathematics Natural Sciences Social Sciences (History and Georgraphy) Technology Economy Life Orientation Creative Arts ADDITIONAL STIMULATION: Learners are given additional stimulation in the form of project solving exercises and individual projects. During the year short excursions are organised for our learners to visit places of interest. Outdoor excursions are organised for our senior primary learners. The school follows the general knowledge quiz programme I Know. 8

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING GENERAL ACADEMIC PRIZE-GIVING: The principles of CAPS are acknowledged in a general academic prizegiving for all learners. This will take place during school hours in the Viljoen Hall for learners from Grade R to Grade 7. All learners will be included. The process will be divided into two sessions. Before break Grades R 3 and after break Grades 4 7. The LSEN class is included in both groups. The top achievers will be awarded for overall outstanding academic achievements. This bar will be named as Academic. All other bars will be handed out at the general prize-giving. Parents will be invited to attend and teachers will be responsible for their own classes. Speeches to be delivered will be limited to a word of welcome and a vote of thanks conducted by the head boy and girl of the school. PRESTIGE PRIZE-GIVING This will be limited to trophy winners. The numbers are much less as some of the bars were already handed out at the general prize-giving. The sport, academic and cultural aspects will be combined for this prizegiving. CLOTHING BANK The school runs a very active clothing bank, where parents can obtain secondhand and new clothing for their children. Parents are also encouraged to donate articles of school clothing to the clothing bank. Shopping hours during school term are on Tueasdays and Thursdays from 09:00 to 13:00. 9

Parents may purchase these items from the clothing bank. Road Running: White Charlo golf shirt, blue Scooter (Quantec) - girls; white shorts boys. Runners may purchase the clothing items for 10

athletics from the clothing bank. Tennis/Mini tennis: Girls - White Charlo golf shirt, blue scooter white socks, predominantly white track shoes Boys - White Charlo golf shirt, white shorts, white socks, predominantly white track shoes Physical Education: White Charlo golf shirt, blue Scooter (Quantec) - girls; white shorts - boys All sports clothes are obtainable from the school's clothing bank. A school tracksuit with badge for all learners participating in interclub or interschool competitions is required. Tracksuits are obtainable through the school. To prevent the loss of clothing it is imperative that each item of school clothing be CLEARLY MARKED. This will greatly assist us in tracing the owner of clothing left at school. Parents are requested to co-operate by insisting that their children are correctly dressed when attending school, in the regulation school dress detailed above. The school accepts no responsibility for the loss of any clothes. Sponsored clothing items will be used at certain sport codes.
