North County STEM Magnet High School Program Requirements FOR NCHS STUDENTS ENTERING GRADE 9 IN THE 2016-2017 SCHOOL YEAR: MINIMUM Course Credit STEM Program Graduation Requirements: English 4.0 credits (Honors or AP Level Grades 9-12) Social Studies 4.5 credits (Honors US History Hybrid- 1.0 credit; Honors US Government- 1.0 credit; AP Human Geography- 1.0 credit; Honors or AP World History- 1.0 credit; STEM Policy 0.5 Science 5.5 credits (Honors STEM Physics/Biology/Chemistry (Systems Science A & B) 3.0 credits; AP Science in 11 th and 12 th grade- 2.0 credit; Science Research III- 0.5 Math 4.0 credits (Honors or AP Level Grades 9-12, preferably through the Calculus level) Physical Education 1.0 credit (Fitness for Life- 0.5 credit; PE Elective- 0.5 Health 0.5 credit Technology Education 1.0 credit (AP Computer Science Principles) World and Classical Languages 3.0 credits in the same language to show a sequence Computer Science (additional credits may be required depending on pathway of study) 1.0 credit Art 1.0 credits (Fundamentals of Design- 0.5 credit; Photo Digital- 0.5 credit Elective Credits- 1.5 credits (Problem/Project-Based Learning Explorations I & II/Community Challenge Course Sequence) STEM Pathway of Study-3.0 credits (Pathway I- 1.0 credit; Pathway II- 1.0 credit; Capstone- 1.0 Business Education 1.0 credit (STEM Internship) OTHER STEM PROGRAM GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS AND CONSIDERATIONS: Mandatory Summer Bridge Programs Entering Grade 9: 8 days, Entering Grade 10: 4 days, Entering Grade 11: 4 days Mandatory Summer Reading Assignments Entering Grades 9-12 Participation in TWO STEM-related competitions Students and Families must attend approximately 4-6 STEM Family Night Events per school year. These events occur in the evenings. Mandatory successful participation and completion of the STEM Job Shadowing Program Mandatory successful completion of a STEM Internship (Summer after Grade 11 or Fall of Grade 12) Students are expected to carry a FULL COURSE SCHEDULE AT THE STEM SCHOOL, IN THE STEM PROGRAM for all four years of high school. Students do have the opportunity to complete their internship during the fall semester of Grade 12 during the school day if scheduling allows. Students must maintain a 2.8 GPA and maintain good citizenship to remain in the STEM Program. Students will be placed on academic probation and/or good citizen contracts if they are not maintaining these standards and then be exited from the program. Students exiting the magnet program MUST return to their home school.
