Educational Talent Search Newsletter F A L L 2 0 1 3 Visit us on Educational Talent Search at Napa Valley College Like us on Facebook! Educational Talent Search (ETS) is a pre-college federally funded TRIO program designed to provide academic support to students in grades 6 th through 12 th from designated schools within the Napa Valley Unified School District. The ETS Program s primary objective is to assist students in graduating from high school and to successfully transition into a post-secondary educational institution. Check out our Napa Valley College Educational Talent Search Website! http://www.napavalley.edu/ StudentServices/talentsearch Educational Talent Search Napa Valley College 2277 Napa-Vallejo Hwy. Building 1100, Room 1133 Napa, CA 94558 (707) 256-7390 (Office) (707) 259-8030 (Fax)

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Some of you may have heard some information regarding the possible sequestration cuts coming this fall, well unfortunately these cuts are now a reality. The Sequester takes effect this new fiscal year 2013-2014, and as a result our ETS Program funding has been cut by an additional 5.23%. This has forced us to make difficult but necessary changes that will be felt throughout various components of the ETS Program such as; a reduction in the number of students we serve, staffing adjustments, services, etc. We will certainly do our best to minimize the impact of these cuts on our students and families, as well as continue to explore other funding sources. Regardless of the challenges we are facing, I assure you we remain steadfast in our focus and mission of providing essential pre-college services in order to improve the attainment of post-secondary education for low-income and first-generation college students. With your collaboration and support, I am confident we will continue to make a difference in the lives of our students and community for many years to come. IMPORTANT UPDATES Over the summer break there have been some very important changes to our ETS Program personnel of which we would like to make you aware of: Our Program Assistant Maricela Lopez is no longer working with us, as she has moved out of the area. We are very thankful for all of the great services she provided to our students and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors. Beginning this school year, our new Program Assistant will be Alma Lopez. We are very happy to be able to welcome Alma back to our ETS family in this new role, as she is a graduate of our program and therefore brings valuable firsthand experience to this critical position. Alma is a UC Berkeley graduate who is currently pursuing her teaching credential through Sonoma State University. She will be providing various college essential skills workshops to our 9 th -11 th grade students. We also have two of our student workers who will not be able to continue to work with us as they are moving forward in pursuing their educational goals. Carmen Farias-Sanchez graduated from Napa Valley College and will be attending Sonoma State University, and Gabriel Gonzalez-Ascencio will be attending St. Mary s College. We thank them both for all of their help and wish them luck in their educational journeys. Two additions to our student worker staff are Vanessa Farias and Yovana Felix. Vanessa s educational goals include transferring to a four-year university after graduating from Napa Valley College in order to pursue a degree within the medical field. Yovana plans on graduating from Napa Valley College and then transferring to either a UC or CSU to earn a sociology degree. Stay tuned, as we are still in the process of hiring a few more student workers.
