School year 2017-2018 NEWSLETTER 17 Friday 8 December CONTENT Ø Message from the principal Ø LOOLA camp group 7 Ø Lost and found and sun hats Ø Advisory Council Ø Parking waiver Ø Christmas Ø Important dates EMAIL ATTACHMENTS Dear parents, Last Tuesday evening many parents came together to decorate the school with Christmas ornaments. The school is looking marvelous and very Christmassy again. We would like to thank the Christmas committee and all parents involved in the preparations and decorations warmly for their efforts. As in previous years, starting this week we have mounted a special charity Christmas tree in the school s hallway. Children, parents and teachers can write their Christmas wishes on a card and hang this in the tree for a fee of1 dollar each. All proceeds of this special Christmas tree are destined for Sokh Sabay, in Cambodia, and the Make a Wish Foundation in Singapore. Additionally, 75 students, parents and staff members will participate in the Santa Run for the Make a Wish Foundation. Because of the holiday season we will have many special activities planned next week. On Monday and Tuesday morning students will be performing before school starts and on Wednesday morning the teachers will do their best in a medley of Christmas carols. On Thursday the traditional J&J Christmas breakfast will take place. The groups 1 thru 8 students will enjoy their HSL Christmas dinner on Thursday evening. More information about the upcoming Christmas

2 activities can be found further in this newsletter. Today s assembly was also centered around the Christmas celebrations. The Christmas story was read and reenacted in a wonderful way by several HSL teachers. Then few of our teachers showed their dancing chops in a special Christmas show/dance. At the end of the assembly the winners of the drawing contest were announced. As preciously reported in the newsletter this was held by the Dutch Ambassador, Mrs. Vonno. The winners have been invited to the Ambassador s residence next week to collect their prize. To thank the children for their participation they all received a cup cake from the Dutch ambassador today. At this time we also have to say goodbye to some of our staffers, unfortunately. Per January, Stephanie de Geus will give up her position as HSL Admission officer. Stephanie filled this role at the HSL these past two years and we would like to thank her for the work she did for us at the Front Desk and in her position as Admission officer. We can inform you that Rinkse Bloemendal will take over the function of Admissions officer at the HSL per 9 January. Hester Moormann worked as Facility officer at the HSL for the past seven years. During this time she was co-responsible for maintenance of the school buildings, inside and out. Thanks to her contributions the school is in tiptop shape. We would like to thank her for everything she meant to the HSL and wish her all the best in the Netherlands. Her role has already been taken over by Michel Lebon. With kind regards, Meino Meines HSL Principal 2

We would like to warmly invite you to an information evening about this camp on Tuesday 9 January at 7 pm. During this evening the program, the journey and the safety of the camp will be discussed. Mark van Loo (the founder of the camp) will join us this evening, too. Lost and found From Tuesday afternoon 12 through Friday afternoon 15 December all lost and found items will be displayed in the school s main hall. When you are visiting us for the Christmas performances or if are dropping off your child for their Christmas dinner, please check the lost and found to see if they include any of your belongings. Sun hats We ask all students to take their sun hats home with them on Friday 15 December so they may be washed over the Christmas holiday break. We as members of the Advisory Council love to be in closer contact with parents in order to increase our understanding of what is on their minds. While enjoying some Christmas treats we would love to speak to those parents waiting for their children during the Christmas dinner on 14 December! So please drop by, we will be at Jip & Janneke between 7 and 8 pm. In addition we would like to introduce you to the fifth and latest member of the Advisory Council, group 5A s Miss Femke Keetman. She and group 1/2a s Mr. Mike are the staff representatives on the council. Welcome Femke!! 3
