COURSE REQUEST FORM PAGE 2

SCHEDULING TIMELINE Jan.14/15- Jan. 26/27: Students will complete Course Request Form. Students should not leave a spot for lunch. It will be scheduled automatically. Jan.14/15- Jan. 26/27: Teachers will advise students on their course selection. Teachers will initial, approve/not approve, make recommendations on student choices. Jan. 14/15- Jan. 25 After having a conversation with their teachers, your students should bring their course request sheet home to have a scheduling conversation with you. Students must obtain a parent signature on the completed Course Request Form. Jan. 26 (OOMS) and Jan. 27 (OBMS) Course Request Forms should be completed and turned in to the middle school.

THE SCHEDULING PROCESS Course Request Verification After all students have completed their initial course requests, the total course requests will be reviewed to decide which courses can be offered (based on enrollment requests) and to make decisions about hiring staff for the 2016-2017 school year. Once the master schedule is built, a class schedule is developed from the course requests.

THE SCHEDULING PROCESS Course Request Verification Parents are strongly encouraged to review their child s course request information! Parents will be able to verify their students selections through PowerSchool portal. A form will be available on the principal s announcements should you need to make a change.

THE SCHEDULING PROCESS Course Request Verification To make adjustments to your child s Course Requests, please print the course change form from the principal s email, mark any changes and return form to the middle school guidance office.

THE SCHEDULING PROCESS Course Request Verification Please note that the earlier a concern is addressed, the more likely it is that a satisfactory solution will be available! As the year progresses and courses fill and close, it becomes more and more difficult to make adjustments and changes to your child s schedule.

THE SCHEDULING PROCESS Course Request Verification All schedule corrections, changes, and adjustments MUST be completed by May 20, 2016! As a reminder, the sooner a concern is addressed, the more likely that a suitable solution will be available for your child.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS What if a parent or student doesn t agree with the course recommended by the classroom teacher? If a teacher recommends a course for your student that doesn t seem to be a best fit, please discuss the placement with your child s teacher. This is best handled as a parent, student, teacher conference. As long as the student has met the prerequisites, the student/parent may determine the course. There is a center column on the course request form to override a teacher recommendation. Please initial this box and circle the course you are choosing.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS What if my child wants to take a course that requires an audition (like band, choir or orchestra)? Students interested in courses that require auditions should place the course on their Schedule Requests. Each student will then meet with the appropriate instructor for an audition, to determine final eligibility. Auditions will be held in the Spring. Students will be notified of the results following auditions and counselors will adjust the schedules if need be.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS What if my child wants to come in late or leave a period early? --Plan for this period on the Course Request Form. --Be certain the Course Request Form has a parent signature. --Late arrive/early release may not work for every student s schedule and therefore is not guaranteed.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS Should my child take an honors course? --An honors course provides the student with additional depth and rigor in the subject. --Talk with your child s teachers about his/her recommendation. --Students should challenge themselves with an honors course if they have an interest and/or aptitude in the subject.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS Can my child accelerate his/her learning by taking summer school courses? --Olentangy Local School District offers a Summer Semester. In 2015 the course offerings were online courses in the following: College Prep English 9, 10, 11, 12 Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus World History, Geography & World Cultures, US & Global Economics, US Government & Politics, US History since the Civil War Health, Physical Education, Lifetime Fitness (face-to-face). --$210 per course

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS Do high school courses completed in middle school count as high school credit? --High School courses completed in middle school (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, &/or Level I of a world language) appear on the high school transcript with a P (passing) and the credit awarded. --Students have until the end of September of the senior year to change the P to the letter grade. --If the student elects to take the letter grade, it is calculated as part of the high school cumulative GPA. --Courses completed the summer prior to ninth grade for acceleration appear on the transcript with the letter grade and calculate as part of the GPA.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS What if my child changes his/her mind about his/her course requests? Please indicate changes on the course change form from the principal s email and turn that in to the middle school guidance office.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS What if I need to consult with a counselor about my changing child s schedule?
