Welcome to the Sixth Form Tucked away in another corner of The Ladies College is the base for our very special Sixth Form students, who complete their education by maintaining a breadth and depth of experience, using imagination, exploration, challenge and fun. Students select three subjects at A-level and an additional qualification such as the EPQ or The Ladies College Diploma. Our Sixth Form partnership with Elizabeth College enables us to offer a wide range of subject choices, including Business Studies, Economics, Film Studies, Photography and Psychology. There is a minimum entry requirement of five GCSE passes at grades A* to C (including English Language and Mathematics) in order to begin A-level study. The majority of girls go on to study at University, many at Russell Group Universities, but some choose to enter the workplace locally or take a gap year. An Enrichment lesson and Careers lesson is included in the weekly timetable along with tutor time. These sessions focus on study skills, managing finances and moving away from home. Weekly careers lessons ensure that each student is guided through the UCAS process on an individual basis. Also on offer to the girls are relaxation sessions which aim to provide students with strategies to cope with stress and even the occasional Zumba class! As well as focusing on academic excellence, Sixth Form aims to develop and nurture the student s talents beyond the classroom and offer further opportunities to develop their skills to be successful, developing into rounded, grounded young adults. Current A-level choices are as follows: Ancient History Art Biology Business Studies Chemistry Classical Greek (to AS level only) Computer Science Dance Design & Technology - Product Design through Graphics OR Resistant Materials Digital Photography Drama & Theatre Studies Economics English Literature Film Studies French Geography German History Latin Mathematics & Further Mathematics Music Physics Psychology Religious Studies Spanish Sport & Physical Education

Independence and Life Long Learning In the Sixth Form student s are given opportunities to take on further responsibilities within the school including: Prefects, House officials, Head of the Charities and Environment committees, Student Council, Music Prefect. Girls are also encouraged to set up their own committees. There are many opportunities for students to become involved in the school and wider community. Many girls also support the younger students as Reliables or help with reading at Melrose. A large number of girls are involved in The Duke of Edinburgh s Award and volunteer in the wider community. The girls have dedicated time to partake in a physical activity throughout the week. Many of the girls also help out with clubs run for the lower school including orchestras, gym club and netball. Through the House system there are a wealth of opportunities for the girls to become involved in House Music, Drama, Gym and Dance to name but a few. These provide opportunities to develop leadership skills and immersion in the wider school community. Every human has four endowments self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom... the power to choose, to respond, to change. Stephen Covey

Energising Mind and Body The transition from young girl to young woman needs more than a classroom. She needs the kind of opportunities that come from building friendships, pushing boundaries, facing challenges and reaching goals. From the traditional drama, sport and music to the more daring days coasteering, kayaking, building rockets or facing the competition in head-on, high stakes debate and everything in between, The Ladies College will give each student room to become the adult she wants to be. The busy school day is enriched by a number of lunchtime and after school co-curricular activities - this includes: Certificate of Enrichment Collas Crill Moot IoD Managment Shadowing Work Experience Young Enterprise Additionally to this all students have the opportunity to take part in whole school drama productions and several smaller year group performances. Also on offer are various lunchtime clubs and activities, entry into the annual Eisteddfod, and a Christian group led by an outside agency. Amongst the sport activities on offer are netball, hockey, fencing, football, gymnastics, badminton, athletics, swimming and tennis clubs. The Junior and Senior Choirs are available to all, and Motet Choirs with places available by audition. There are various instrumental ensembles including a Training Orchestra, String orchestra, Wind Band, Jazz Bands, Chamber ensembles and Ukulele Orchestra. Additional private music tuition is also offered. First Aid Training / TEFL A presentation about First Aid will be given to Lower Sixth students by a local paramedic. Students may sign-up for after-school sessions in order to gain their certificate and card. The training will give them the confidence and ability to respond in emergency situations. This two day course is offered annually to Sixth Form students, as is a TEFL course (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). I believe that a really important part of Sixth Form is seizing all the opportunities given to you. I have traveled to Sri Lanka with an outside organisation, completed Management Shadowing, am in the process of an EPQ and have started working on my Gold Duke of Edinburgh, all just in my time at Sixth Form so far. Chloe Curtis, U6 2016-17

Prospective Sixth Form Applicants Most of our Upper Five students choose to remain with us at Sixth Form however, we also receive applications from students currently studying at other schools in Guernsey, the UK and further afield. Sophie James joined in 2014 from The Grammar School and here is her experience of starting The Ladies College as a Sixth Form student. Moving to College Prior to moving to The Ladies College I was aware of the high standard of work through both of my sisters and some close friends attending the school, as well as reading about many of the school s achievements in The Guernsey Press, such as the student s involvement in numerous charities. Both this impressive reputation and my need for a change fuelled my move to The Ladies College where I have developed my academic skills, selfconfidence and passion for my subjects, particularly Psychology. At first, like many before me, I found moving schools challenging and it took a while before I was comfortably settled, with good friendships, and used to a new arrangement. By moving schools I feel I have experienced a small part of the changes which University brings, and I am looking forward to the huge challenge of going to University, meeting new people and getting used to a totally new environment. My older sister, Eva, encouraged me to make the most of my two years at The Ladies College like she did, as her role as co-editor of The Ilex and her participation in French/Spanish trips have helped her significantly. Despite only being here for just over a year, I have good relationships with people I hope to stay in contact with, and I am now much better equipped for University my experience at this school has helped to prepare me for the future. One thing you cannot read about in the press before moving to The Ladies College (or truly understand if someone tells you) is the school spirit, the importance of the song He who would valiant be/to be a Pilgrim, the need for cake to be taken very seriously, and the truth to the school s motto Fais Ce Que Dois, Advienne Que Pourra, Do your duty, come what may.

Life after College Year on year the pass rate of our students in both GCSE and A-level examinations are impressive. The girls work both individually and collaboratively with their teachers to ensure they have achieved their best. The College is very proud of all our students and their achievements, both in and out of the classroom. The destinations of our girls include not only Oxbridge and the Russell Group of Universities, but also further education studies abroad. Some take foundation courses in the Arts and Music and others decide to take time to travel, whilst some remain on the island and enter the workplace through bursary and training schemes in the many local businesses. They all leave here with a sense of fulfilment having partaken in a variety of co-curricular activities which help shape their characters and decisions in their future careers. The girls keep in touch by being part of The Ladies College Guild. The Guild was founded in 1905 and has supported the College in many ways since 1905, including contributing towards the cost of changing rooms, a piano, Speech Day prizes and the purchase of the playing field (which was handed over to College ownership in 2013). Current students benefit with financial support to the cost of school trips and most recently a donation towards the A Gift for Learning campaign, funded the board/meeting room as part of its new build. Membership of the Guild is automatic when a girl leaves College. Regular alumnae events are held to bring together faces old and new, to celebrate how special the College is, with the 110th Guild anniversary tea party held in 2015 and the first London event held in 2016. The Ladies College gave me a fantastic education and I ve always considered myself very lucky to have studied there. Over the years, I have seen how the College has evolved and I hope your daughters are able to benefit from the many opportunities the College has to offer.
