Getting it Right for Children in Aberdeenshire: Training Calendar 2018 Aberdeenshire Community Planning Partnership is committed to working towards consistently high standards of practice across the children s services workforce by ensuring that staff are confident and competent, sharing a clear understanding of the principles, values and practices, including use of the national practice model, that underpin the Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) approach. The GIRFEC Modules provide a series of multi-agency learning and development sessions to support this commitment, with a focus on partnership working. Each agency/service is responsible for providing specific learning and development opportunities for employees where required, to support confident delivery of specific professional roles, as related to GIRFEC. The GIRFEC Modules are not intended to provide this core knowledge, but aim to further enhance professional development through an opportunity to consider certain aspects of the GIRFEC approach in a multi-agency context. Participants are therefore asked to ensure they have a prior basic awareness of the GIRFEC approach as relevant to individual roles, in order to maximise engagement and learning from the modules. Who should attend? Practitioners working in any service, either statutory or voluntary, that provide services to children, young people and their families in Aberdeenshire. Please note that this includes Adult Services staff who work with adults who are parents or carers of children. Module 1: Children s Rights, Engagement and Participation This module is suitable for all practitioners in any agency that provides services to children, young people and their families in Aberdeenshire. This 1 hour 15-minute session explores and highlights the essential focus of engagement with children and young people within GIRFEC with reference to the UCHR and UNCRC. Children s participation in discussions regarding their circumstances can present challenge and this session aims to promote reflection of how this can be promoted and signpost to tools and strategies which can be helpful. Module 2: Information Sharing This module is suitable for all practitioners in any agency that provides services to children, young people and their families in Aberdeenshire. This training will explain how sharing of relevant information supports multi-agency working in the context of promoting the well-being of children and young people and clarify the legal and policy context. Information sharing can provoke anxiety, this training will provide information on personal and organisational responsibility in this regard and promote an understanding of situations where consent to share information is required and where it is not to develop confidence in practice.

Module 3: The Named Person and Lead Professional This full-day module is suitable for all practitioners in any agency that provides services to children, young people and their families in Aberdeenshire, particularly those in Universal and Statutory Services who may assume both or either role. This training will provide an understanding of what is meant by wellbeing and its central focus within GIRFEC; explain the role and function of the Named Person and the Lead Professional; raise awareness of those roles in practice and their context within Multi-Agency working. Module 4: Assessment and Chronologies This full-day module is suitable for all practitioners in any agency that provides services to children, young people and their families in Aberdeenshire, particularly Universal Service Named Persons who will complete Single Service Assessments. Chronologies are useful tools in reflecting on individual circumstances and in contributing to assessment in the context of highlighting patterns of experience or functioning and are a requirement within GIRFEC. This training will provide guidance on the completion of Chronologies by utilising the GIRFEC practice models and tools and analysis of information gathered in the context of assessment and potential next steps within the GIRFEC process. Module 5: Multi- Agency Meetings This full-day module is suitable for all practitioners in any agency that provides services to children, young people and their families in Aberdeenshire. This course will describe and explore the process of arranging Multi-Agency Action Planning Meetings; the roles and remits of involved agencies in the context of identifying whom should attend and how those roles and remits contribute to meetings focussed on promoting wellbeing of the children and families at the centre of process. Participants will apply knowledge and experience in a role-play of a Multi-agency Meeting with the aim of increasing confidence in participation, understanding of the roles and responsibilities of professionals and the impact of attending MAAPM s on children and their families. Module 6: Action Planning This full-day module is suitable for all practitioners in any agency that provides services to children, young people and their families in Aberdeenshire. The course focuses on the process of devising and reviewing an Action Plan, to achieve desired outcomes and promote wellbeing. This course will develop and build on existing awareness of roles and remits of involved services; explore how this can be utilised and stipulated within a Multi-Agency Action Plan and progress on to how plans are reviewed, revised or concluded in subsequent Multi Agency Action Planning Review Meetings.

We recommend Named Persons and Lead Professionals attend all 6 modules. The training is relevant for practitioners who work with children, adults who care for children or adults who have regular contact with children. Please discuss which of these modules best suit your continuing professional development needs with your line manager before applying to attend courses. Before attending sessions, you should be aware of: A Guide to Getting it Right for Every Child http://www.scotland.gov.uk/topics/people/young-people/gettingitright/publications/practice-guide Children and Young people s (Scotland) Act 2014 http://www.gov.scot/topics/people/young-people/legislation Getting it Right For Aberdeenshire Children - Multi Agency Assessment and Planning for children and young people : Application process: www.girfec-aberdeenshire.org Please apply by email to training.courses@aberdeenshire.gov.uk giving details of the date of the session you wish to attend, your name, job title, organisation, and a contact phone number.
