Introduction The process of Improvement Planning in Kentucky is used as the means of determining how schools and districts will plan to ensure that students reach proficiency and beyond by 2014. The process focuses school and district improvement efforts on student needs by bringing together all stakeholders to plan for improvement, by focusing planning efforts on priority needs and closing achievement gaps between subgroups of students, by building upon school and district capacity for high quality planning, and by making connections between the funds that flow into the district and the priority needs in schools. Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? is located in Columbia, Kentucky and serves 360 third, fourth and fifth grade students. There are eighteen classroom four special education teachers and two Title I teachers on staff. In addition there is a full time librarian, counselor, assistant principal and principal. John Adair has experienced gains in both reading and math scores over the past three years but continues to have gaps in free/reduced scores in both areas, as well as, with students with disabilties. At one time the school had a full time RtI interventionst teacher but funding was lost for this position so this has been a significant challenge for the school. is limited for after school programs to help students, as well as, being a rural community, transportation becomes an issue. Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. The faculty and staff of believe that all students can learn and achieve. We believe that our school's purpose is to educate all students while fostering growth in social/emotional behaviors, creativity, and independent thinking. All students have classes in reading,, math, social studies, science, and participate in a rotation of classes that include physical education, art and music. In addition, at each grade level students rotate in classes that include drama and dance, and areas of the practical living/ career studies core content. SY 2012-2013 Page 5
Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. On the 2011-2012 K-Prep John Adair scored in the proficient category and only missed being a distinguished school by eigth tenths of a point, scoring at the 88th percentile. Students in fourth grade science and language mechanics in achievement received additional points since there were more distingished students than novice. Addtional points were also achieved in fifth grade social studies. John Adair scores have improved in all areas over the past three years and students are very driven to improve each year. Students are recognized throughout the school year in morning assembly for assessments that their teachers give throughout the year, as well as, learning checks that are conducted three times per year. In reading, schoolwide, 54.3 percent of students scored proficient/distinguished, with 64.9 percent of fourth graders scoring at proficient/distinguished. Schoolwide in math, 43.1 percent of students scored at proficient/distinguised. Again, fourth grade students scored the best in math with 63.1 percent scoring proficient/distinguished.
