Kickstart helps all our students prepare for the year ahead of them giving them extra teaching and learning time to understand their courses and set learning goals with their teachers. Although this is an extremely busy time for our teachers and students, this program has had very positive feedback and we are encouraged that it will help all our students achieve their personal best in 2018. Damaged Buildings Over the last 18 months I have been working with our staff, School Council President and parent community to try to gain the much needed funds to improve our Science and Maths facilities for our students and staff. We know from our programs and student engagement and learning that we have excellent Maths and Science teachers, programs and student achievement results, but our classrooms do not meet 21st century expectations. I have written to the Minister of Education on multiple occasions, and toured our Science and Maths facilities with the Minister of Education, Shadow Minister and Federal Minister, all of whom agreed the science and maths classrooms are in need of upgrading. Unfortunately the recent rain storms have exacerbated the situation where we saw three of our science rooms flooded, damaging science equipment, prep rooms and classrooms. This week Brad Battin came to speak with myself, Brad Gibb - our Head of Science and Phillip Rundle - our Groundsman, and was shocked at the state of the damage and our sub-standard facilities. We may not be in a busy suburb or city area, but our students still deserve the best facilities, equal to those students in other areas, to help them aspire and achieve in science and maths. Brad Battin will be bringing Tim Smith the Shadow Minister of Education to our College to view our facilities with the aim of encouraging State Parliament to upgrade our buildings for our students and staff. Arts and Technology Exhibition Next Tuesday evening starting at 5.30pm in our Inclusion & Learning Centre, I would like to invite our whole learning community to our 2017 Art & Technology Exhibition. This is an opportunity to view and celebrate the amazing talents of our students.

Annual Awards Evening Following on from our Arts & Technology Exhibition on Tuesday 12th we will be holding our Annual Awards Evening in EPAC. I would like to encourage all our families to attend to help celebrate the amazing skills and talents of our students. Jodie Doble - Principal Junior School Student of the Week For the final Junior School student of the Week for 2017 I wanted to focus on some students who have been demonstrating outstanding leadership and commitment to their Yr 9 Connect Community Project. The first student is: Jazmine Dewar Jazmine was nominated by Mr Kawakami. Her group s community project - Japanese Initiative Activities for Primary School Students - was for two of our local feeder schools. Jazmine took on a leadership role from the start to help guide her group to run their activity for the Primary School students. She made a positive contribution in planning, organising equipment, rehearsing and running the activity on the day. She also voluntarily helped out other groups activities when required. This demonstrates Jazmine s excellent leadership and initiative skills. Congratulations Jazmine great work! Tahlia Studham Tahlia was nominated by her Connect Community Teacher Mrs Mosca. Mrs Mosca states that Tahlia has been focused and outcome driven during her group s Connect project - Backpacks 4 Kids. She has shown leadership in her group and fabulous organizational skills. Tahlia has also taught me how to share our Connect photos using Bluetooth! Congratulations Tahlia great work! Sophie Ogilvie Sophie has been nominated by Ms Trounson for her work within the Trvia Night Community Project. This trivia night actually ended up raising over $1000 for the local Emerald SES. Ms Trounson stated that Sophie has demonstrated great initiative in the organisation of the Trivia Night. She has been really positive and motivated amongst all her peers. She has sourced around 15 donations, securing goods and services from many local Emerald businesses. She has collected and organised these donations so they were ready for the big night. Her contribution to the group has been invaluable. Congratulations Sophie great work! College Bus Reminders The College wishes to remind parents of all students who travel on the school bus service for 2018 that application forms were due by the end of November. If you are yet to register your child s travel for 2018 then you can still do so. A reminder that all travel on these bus services requires your child to be registered as this is to ensure PTV requirements and also ensure that the College has records of their travel for emergency management purposes. PTV Inspectors Over the last two weeks the Monbulk Pay Bus and the Belgrave 695 have had inspectors stationed at the College in the morning to check that students are travelling with a valid MYKI card. The College has been alerted to the fact that there were students who have obtained a travel violation. These will be followed up through PTV with the students and their families. It is important that all students travelling on the bus have a valid MYKI card. Students and families must understand that the more touch on/touch off recordings that occur on these runs then the greater the likelihood that increased services will happen in the area. Thank You I would like to take this opportunity, in the last newsletter entry from me for the year, to thank all the students and parents whom I have met and worked together with over the last 8 years here at Emerald Secondary. I have been lucky to play a role in a positive way with many young people over this time and I wish the best for current students and their families going forward. The end of the year for me ends one chapter and starts another. Mike Jaremczuk - College Assistant Principal

My Road Mentoring Program On Friday 8th December, 33 female Year 10 and 11 students were involved in a two hour My Road Mentoring Program via video conference hosted by The Beacon Foundation. The seven groups each had their own mentor to run through the My Road Program discussing topics such as the job market and tips for successfully navigating it, tips on how to handle job interviews and other stressful situations, the skills students already have and how to use them to their advantage, new jobs and career pathways they may never have thought of, and learning more about friends and fellow students wishes for the future. Our mentors came from various fields including Coca Cola, Westpac, Origin Energy, Australian Mines and Metals Association and The Beacon Foundation. Well done to all participants and I want to thank The Beacon Foundation for this fantastic opportunity for our students Nik Smith - Pathways Leader Art & Technology Exhibition The Emerald Secondary College Annual Art and Technology Exhibition opening is on Tuesday December 12th, from 5.30pm-7.00pm in the Inclusion & Learning Centre.
