2018-2019 EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY TEACHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS The office of Teacher Education is offering the following scholarships for the 2018 2019 academic year. Interested applicants should fill out the Teacher Education Scholarship Application and send it to Dr. Mary Bigler, 313 Porter, Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI 48197 by March 30, 2018. Applicants must be currently enrolled with a minimum of 3.0 GPA (unless noted otherwise). Gae E. Amorose Scholarship. The Gae E. Amorose Scholarship is for a full-time or part-time female undergraduate education major who has been admitted to the elementary teacher preparation program in the College of Education and has financial need as determined by the College of Education. Bergoine/Annesser Scholarship. The Bergoine/Annesser Scholarship is for a female junior or senior studying to become an elementary teacher. The student must have at least a 3.0 gpa and be earning at least a portion of her college expenses. Bragdon, Barbara Jean Scholarship. Scholarship is for male or female student pursuing a career in Elementary Education. Candidate must be a graduate of Warren Consolidated Schools. Candidate must write an essay on the importance of elementary education. Edith Calder Block Scholarship. The Edith Calder Block Scholarship is for a student studying early elementary education. Bess Browne Scholarship. The Bess Browne Scholarship is for an undergraduate elementary education major who has financial need as determined by the College of Education. Thomas C. and Nancy Chwalik Scholarship. The Thomas C. and Nancy Chwalik Scholarship is for a male student studying to become an elementary teacher. Preference is given to a student from the Wayne/Westland School District. Eudora Estabrook Scholarship. The Eudora Estabrook Scholarship is for a prospective elementary education teacher who has demonstrated a financial need as determined by the College of Education. Bernice Louise Farley Scholarship. The Bernice Louise Farley Scholarship is for an undergraduate early education student who has at least a 2.5 grade point average. Gwin E. Ferrington Scholarship. The Gwin E. Ferrington Scholarship is for a sophomore, junior, or senior elementary or secondary education major who demonstrates financial need. The student must have a minimum gpa of 3.0. Furlotte Twins Scholarship. The Furlotte Twins Scholarship is for a junior or senior undergraduate student who is enrolled in the elementary education program in the College of Education and exhibits promise, creativity and academic conscientiousness. The student must have a minimum 3.0 gpa. Preference is given to a twin. Greasley-Mich Scholarship. The Greasley-Mich Scholarship is for a junior or senior undergraduate student studying to become an elementary or secondary teacher.

Gustine Family Scholarship. The Gustine Family Scholarship is for a junior or senior undergraduate student studying to become an elementary teacher who has financial need as determined by the College of Education. The student must be a single parent and have at least a 2.0 grade point average. Thomas Gwaltney Scholarship. The Thomas Gwaltney Scholarship is for a graduate student enrolled in a Teacher Education program. The student must have a 3.25 minimum gpa from undergraduate studies. Gerald J. Henry Scholarship. The Gerald Henry Scholarship is for an undergraduate elementary math major with a minimum 3.2 gpa who has financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. Gail Ardis Hughes Elementary Education Scholarship. The Gail Ardis Hughes Elementary Education Scholarship is for a student studying to become an elementary teacher who is in good academic standing with at least a 2.0 grade point average. Preference is given to a student focusing on grades 1-3 with emphasis on reading and writing skills. Selection criteria may include the student s ability with young children and promise of leadership as discerned through class work. Phyllis and Elsie Kalmbach Scholarship. The Phyllis and Elsie Kalmbach Scholarship is for a senior elementary education major enrolled in the teacher education program in the College of Education and who exhibits financial need. Margaret R. Esche Lee Scholarship. The Margaret R. Esche Lee Scholarship is for a junior or senior education major studying music or upper elementary education. Mary Jane and Ed McEachern Scholarship. The Mary Jane and Ed McEachern Scholarship is for an Ypsilanti High School graduate who is a junior or senior, pursuing an elementary teaching certificate, who has at least a 2.7 overall grade point average, and who has at least a 3.0 grade point average in their major. Jean Taylor Lyman Scholarship. The Jean Taylor Lyman Scholarship is to support students enrolled in Early Childhood Education undergraduate and graduate programs. Eligible students must be admitted to and enrolled in either the Early Childhood Education bachelor s program or the Early Childhood Education master s program. Undergraduate gpa must be at least a 3.5 and the graduate gpa must be at least 3.7. Applicants must write a two-page essay on why they are pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education. Kenneth and Hazel Olsen Scholarship. The Kenneth and Hazel Olsen Scholarship is awarded to a freshperson in elementary education from Fowlerville or Howell area or Livingston County. There must be a minimum gpa of 2.5. If the student meets all other criteria except gpa, the gpa requirement may be waived. Louisa Palmer Scholarship. The Louisa Palmer Scholarship is for a student enrolled in the elementary teacher education program, with preference given to a student who intends to teach kindergarten.

Pearl O. Palmer Scholarship. The Pearl Palmer Scholarship is for a graduate student in the Social Foundations of Education program. The applicant must have a 3.0 gpa, demonstrate a commitment to the field of social foundations, and demonstrate financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. The applicant must write a two-page letter showing their commitment to the field of social foundations and the advanced program s theme: Inquiry, advocacy, and leadership in education for a diverse and democratic society and describe how the scholarship will support their academic and professional lives and make a significant difference in their career. The letter should also include an explanation of merit and financial need. The applicant must include a statement from the student s advisor that establishes that the student is in good professional and academic standing in the program and indicates when the student should complete the program. Stokes Educational Technology Scholarship. The Stokes Educational Technology Scholarship shall be awarded to a student in the College of Education pursuing a master's degree in Educational Media & Technology (NOTE: students in other EDMT programs may also be considered) who have a 3.0 or better grade point average, have been admitted into the Educational Media and Technology master s degree program (or other EDMT graduate program), and demonstrate a financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. To apply, students must complete the Department of Teacher Education Scholarship application and must write a 2-3 page essay discussing how they currently infuse - or plan to infuse - educational technology in the classroom, providing examples, and why being the first person in their family to pursue a graduate degree is an important accomplishment. Elizabeth Root and Irene Allen Scholarship. The Elizabeth Root and Irene Allen Scholarship is for an undergraduate or graduate student admitted to the College of Education with at least a 3.0 grade point average for an undergraduate student or a 3.0 grade point average for a graduate student. The student must be interested in using children s books in teaching, especially international children s books, and write a 1-2 page narrative discussing interest in using children s books in teaching and how he or she plans to use children s literature as an educator. Jack and Joanne Stapleton Scholarship. The Jack and Joanne Stapleton Scholarship is for an undergraduate student enrolled in the teacher education program who has earned at least 60 credit hours at Eastern Michigan University, has at least a 3.0 grade point average, and is a graduate of Livonia or Southfield, Michigan, high schools. The student must write an essay describing financial need. Scott W. and McDonna Street Scholarship. The Scott W. and McDonna Street Scholarship is given to a student who has been admitted to the teacher education program in the College of Education who has at least a 3.0 grade point average and has financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. Preference is given to students involved in extracurricular activities. Applicants for this scholarship must write a 1-2 page essay explaining Progressive Education and how the philosophy will affect their teaching.

Margaret E. Wise #1 Scholarship. The Margaret E. Wise #1 Scholarship is for a student, with preference given to an early elementary curriculum student. Dorcas Wolf Scholarship in Elementary Education. The Dorcas Wolf Scholarship in Elementary Education is for an undergraduate or post baccalaureate student enrolled in the College of Education, studying to become an elementary school teacher and in good academic standing. EcoJustice Education Scholarship This scholarship is to support graduate or undergraduate students who are studying EcoJustice Education and wish to further their studies through travel, research, or related activities. The scholarship will prioritize students who wish to visit or collaborate with students and faculty at the University of Tampere in Tampere, Finland to deepen EMU s partnership with the School of Education at the University of Tampere. Other activities related to EcoJustice Education will also be considered. Students should submit a one-page proposal describing the activities they wish to use the funding for along with a brief budget detailing how the funds will be used. Student should also submit at least one letter of recommendation from an EMU professor indicating that the student is in good academic standing. If an outside agency is involved, there must also be a letter from that agency approving the student s participation and activities. Application will be submitted to the Dept. of Teacher Education Awards Committee who will pass it on to appropriate faculty if needed. Award(s) totaling up to $1,000 will be granted per year.
