Washburn University Enrollment Report This report provides information on fall 2014 enrollment for Washburn University and Washburn Tech, based on the 20 th day census. Appendix A provides fall enrollment for the six public four-year Kansas institutions, the community colleges, and the technical schools. Washburn University Overview Table 1 provides a summary of fall 2014 enrollment for Washburn University. Headcount enrollment of 6,722 is down from fall 2013 by 251 students or 3.6%. Student credit hours (SCH) of 73,402 are down by 2,739 representing a 3.6% decrease from fall 2013. The full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment of 5,122 is down by 173 FTE or 3.3% from fall 2013. First-time freshmen enrollment of 801 students decreased from fall 2013 by 50 students or 5.9% with most of the decrease in the other first-time freshmen category. Women account for 58.9% of the student body. Almost all of Washburn s students are residents of Kansas (90.3%). Minority students make up almost one-quarter (23.1%) of the student population. Almost two-thirds (65.2%) of Washburn students are enrolled full-time. The average age of undergraduate students is 24.3 years; graduate students, 35.1 years; and law students, 26.7 years. The average course load is 12.1 SCH for undergraduates, 6.9 SCH for graduates, and 13.9 SCH for law. Non-degree seeking students enroll in an average of 5.4 SCH. In addition to the 6,722 students enrolled at Washburn, 198 students enrolled in the 60 and Over Tuition-free Audit Program 1 generating 731 SCH. These students are not included in the official enrollment count. 1 The 65 and Over Tuition-free Audit Program was changed to the 60 and Over Tuition-free Audit Program in fall 2013, allowing Kansas residents ages 60 and older to audit courses at no cost. Analysis Table 1 provides an overview of fall 2014 enrollment with comparative data for fall 2013. Overall, fall 2014 headcount enrollment of 6,722 students decreased by 251 or 3.6% over fall 2013 and student credit hours of 73,402 decreased by 2,739 (3.6%). See table 2 for enrollment and SCH data from fall 1970 to fall 2014. This section examines various components of fall enrollment. Enrollment by Classification and Status Table 1 and graph 1 present headcount enrollment by student classification. Undergraduate enrollment of 5,031 students accounts for almost three-quarters (74.8%) of Washburn s total enrollment. Graduate enrollment (master s and doctorate) with 497 students and law with 324 students comprise 7.4% and 4.8% of the total, respectively. The 870 non-degree seeking students make up the balance accounting for 12.9% of the total. In comparison to fall 2013, headcount enrollment in fall 2014 decreased at the undergraduate level by 289 students (5.4%) and in law by 17 students (5.0%). Enrollment increased at the graduate level by 44 students (9.7%) and for non-degree seeking students by 11 students (1.3%). First-time freshmen decreased from fall 2013 by 50 students or 5.9%. Two types of students make up first-time freshmen: (1) first-time freshmen who graduated high school earlier in the year (i.e., direct high school matriculants) and (2) other first-time freshmen (i.e., students who did not graduate from high school during the prior spring). There are 801 first-time freshmen enrolled in fall 2014 with 678 direct high school matriculants and 123 other first-time freshmen. The direct high school matriculants basically remained level from fall 2013 decreasing by seven students or 1.0,%; given that the number of high school graduates is down in Kansas as well as across the nation, a small decline in this population is viewed positively. Other first-time freshmen decreased by 43 students or 25.9%. A third component of freshmen, other freshmen (i.e., students who were first-time freshmen in prior years) also remained level, decreasing by three students. undergraduate enrollment also declined by 130 students (12.9%) for sophomores, by 45 students (3.6%) for juniors, by 11 students (0.7%) for seniors, and by 50 students (19.5%) for postbaccalaureate students enrolling in undergraduate courses. Graduate enrollment was up over fall 2013 by almost 10%, increasing by 44 students. Enrollment at the master s level increased by 37 students (8.3%) and in the doctor of nursing practice program by seven students; the doctor of nursing practice program is now in its second year. Law school enrollment declined by 17 students (5.0%) between fall 2013 and fall 2014, mirroring the nationwide trend of falling enrollments in law. At Washburn, law school enrollment has declined over 25% from its peak enrollment of 455 student in fall 2010. On a positive note, the decline in law is smaller than it has been the past three years indicating enrollment may be leveling off. As noted above, the non-degree seeking category of students increased by 11 students or 1.3%. This category is made up of two components: (1) high school students and (2) students not formally seeking a degree, i.e., other non-degree seeking students. The number of high school students increased by 32 students (4.9%) while students classified as other non-degree seeking decreased by 21 students (10.3%). Prior to fall 2010, high school students accounted for less than 2% of total enrollment at Washburn. For the past few years, the percentage has been steadily increasing with high school students now accounting for 10.2% of total enrollment. Kansas residents 60 years of age and over may audit credit courses at Washburn without paying tuition and fees, subject to availability of class space through the 60 and Over Tuition-free Audit Program. In fall 2014, 198 students enrolled in the program generating 731 SCH, a record enrollment for this population. Table 3 shows the distribution of students by full-time/part-time attendance and by class from fall 2010 to fall 2014. In fall 2014, 65.2% of all students enrolled full-time and 34.8% enrolled part-time. This proportion has remained fairly steady over the five-year period. Nearly all law students (99.4%) enroll full-time and three-quarters (75.2%) of degree-seeking undergraduate students enroll full-time. Graduate students are more likely to be part-time students, with 32.0% enrolling full-time. Non-degree seeking students also tend to enroll part-time with 86.4% enrolling part-time. Given that 79.0% of non-degree seeking students are high school students, the large proportion of part-time enrollment for this category of students is expected. Students have options for how they will attend class: on campus, off campus, online, or some combination of the three. 2 Slightly over one-half (52.5%) of fall 2014 students enroll only in courses taught on the Washburn campus; 10.7% of students enroll only in courses that do not meet on the Washburn campus (e.g., study abroad, internships, courses taught at another location such as the high school or hospital); and 8.9% enroll only in online courses. The remaining students (27.9%) engage in a mixture of the three. 2 There has been a change in coding the course location from fall 2013. In prior years, courses taught on high school campuses and study abroad were classified as off campus courses. Undergraduate Enrollment by Student Type Undergraduate enrollment is made up of new, continuing, and returning students. Students enrolling in college in fall 2014 for the first time or who are transferring from another college or university to Washburn are considered new students. Continuing students are students who were enrolled at Washburn in spring 2014 or summer 2014. Returning students previously attended Washburn but stopped out for one or more terms. Table 4 displays undergraduate enrollment by these three student types for fall semesters 2010 through 2014. A little over two-thirds (68.7%) of fall 2014 undergraduates are continuing students with 3,454 students in this category. New students (1,315 students) account for 26.1% of undergraduate enrollment with first-time freshmen decreasing from fall 2013 by 50 students and transfer students increasing by 20 students. Returning students constitute the smallest group (262 students) making up 5.2% of the undergraduates. Student Credit Hours Table 5 presents SCH by division (lower, upper, and graduate and law combined) and by college/school and department for fall 2014 with comparative total SCH for fall 2013. data are also presented in graph 2. SCH of 73,402 are down from fall 2013 by 2,739, a decrease of 3.6%. Lower division courses account for 56.7 % of total SCH and upper division courses make up 32.5% of the total. Combined, lower and upper level courses generate 89.2% of SCH, with graduate and law making up the balance at 4.7% and 6.1%, respectively. For fall 2014, SCH increased only at the graduate level with an increase of 312 SCH or 9.9%. At the undergraduate level, SCH decreased by 2,760 (4.0%) with a decrease at the lower division by 2,312 SCH (5.3%) and a decrease at the upper division by 448 SCH (1.8%). Student credit hours decreased for law by 291 SCH (6.1%). With 42,306 SCH, the College of Arts and Sciences generates the greatest number of credit hours, accounting for 57.6% of total SCH. The other schools are much smaller with the School of Applied Studies producing 11,644 SCH (15.9%), followed by the School of Business with 5,480 SCH (7.5%), the School of Nursing with 5,416 SCH (7.4%), and the School of Law with 4,494 SCH (6.1%). Other programs (e.g., interdisciplinary studies, honors, leadership) generate 4,062 SCH (5.5%). See graph 2.1. In fall 2014, SCH increased only in the School of Nursing by 4.0% (206 SCH). All of the other units experienced declines with SCH decreasing by 5.2% in the College of Arts and Sciences; by 2.1% in the School of Business; by 1.3% in the School of Applied Studies; by 6.1% in the School of Law; and by 2.0% for other programs. In the College of Arts and Sciences, almost three-quarters (74.0%) of the SCH generated are lower division, 24.8 % are upper division, and 1.2% are graduate. Student credit hours were down from fall 2013 in the lower division by 1,929 SCH (5.8%) and in the upper division by 384 SCH (3.5%), but up at the graduate level by 10 SCH (1.9%). Student credit hours were up in five departments in the College: physics increased by 191 SCH (11.6%), education by 173 SCH (6.6%), computer science by 91 SCH (10.1%), modern languages by 45 SCH (2.5%), and sociology/anthropology by 41 SCH (1.5%). Kinesiology had the largest decline in SCH of 526 SCH (22.0%) with most of the decline at the lower division due to the elimination of KN198 as a University requirement. English and psychology also experienced large decreases in SCH of 441 SCH (7.9%) and 315 SCH (11.6%), respectively. In the School of Business, 37.8% of SCH generated are from lower division courses, 50.6% from upper division courses, and 11.6% from graduate. Student credit hours were down from last fall at the lower division by 9 SCH (0.4%) and at the upper division by 166 SCH (5.7%); SCH are up at the graduate level by 59 SCH (10.2%). Student credit hours were up in both accounting (106 SCH or 8.7%) and economics (36 SCH or 2.7%), while SCH in other business courses were down by 258 SCH (8.5%). For the School of Nursing, 3.7% of total SCH are lower division, 80.4% are upper division, and 15.9% are graduate division. Student credit hours increased over fall 2013 at the upper division by 168 SCH (4.0%) and graduate division by 88 SCH (11.4%). At the lower division, SCH declined by 50 SCH (20.1%). In the School of Applied Studies, 35.3% of SCH are generated at the lower division, 52.4% at the upper division, and 12.3% at the graduate level. In fall 2014, SCH increased at the upper division by 7 SCH (0.1%) and at the graduate division by 155 SCH (12.1%). Student credit hours decreased at the lower division by 316 SCH (7.1%). Allied Health had the largest increase in SCH (134 SCH or 2.9%) followed by criminal justice and legal studies with an increase of 42 SCH (1.2%). Student credit hours declined in social work by 9 SCH (0.5%) and in human services by 321 SCH (16.4%). Student credit hours in the Other Programs category decreased by 81 SCH or 2.0% between fall 2013 and fall 2014. Table 6 shows the distribution of students by the number of hours enrolled and the average course load by student level (undergraduate, graduate, law, and non-degree seeking). The average course load for undergraduates is 12.1 SCH, up from 12.0 SCH in fall 2013 and 11.8 SCH in fall 2012. For graduate students, the average load is 6.9 hours with no change in the average load for the past two years. Law students enroll in a higher number of hours than undergraduate and graduate students, with an average course load of 13.9 SCH; the average load dropped from 14.1 SCH in fall 2013. Demographics Table 7 presents headcount enrollment by gender for fall 1994 through fall 2014. There are 3,957 females (58.9%) and 2,765 males (41.1%) enrolled in fall 2014. This is the highest proportion of male students enrolled in the 21 years of data displayed in table 7. While most of Washburn s students are Kansas residents (6,069 or 90.3%), 653 students (9.7%) are nonresidents as noted in table 8. This is the third consecutive fall term where the number of nonresident students has increased with nonresident enrollment currently at a record level. is the third year of the Interstate Waiver Program whereby out-of-state students from select states (Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas) entering Washburn for the first time are granted resident tuition rates. There are currently 129 students receiving the Interstate Waiver: 68 from Missouri, 21 from Colorado, 18 from Nebraska, 12 from Texas, and 10 from Oklahoma. Note that these students are reported as nonresident students. In fall 2014, 5,527 students (82.2%) provided Washburn with data on their race and ethnicity; 23.1% of those students are minority students. 3 The percentage of minority students is up from 22.3% in fall 2013. Table 9 displays the average age of students by student level. The average age of undergraduate students is 24.3. Almost 71% of the undergraduates are traditional-aged students with 24.4% under age 20, 25.8% from 20 to 21 years, and 20.7% from 22 to 24 years. Nontraditional students, defined as students 25 years and older, account for 29.1% of the undergraduate population. The average age for graduate students is 35.1; the average age for law students is lower at 26.7. The average age for all students including non-degree seeking students is 24.6. Washburn Tech Table 11 provides a summary of Washburn Tech enrollment for fall 2014 compared with fall 2013. headcount is 1,217 students, representing an increase over fall 2013 of 55 students or 4.7%. 3 Students self-report ethnicity/race using categories established by the federal government. Institutions are required to collect data from students using a two-question format. The first question asks whether the respondent is Hispanic or Latino. The second question asks the respondent to select one or more races from the following five racial groups: American Indian or Alaska Native; Asian; Black or African American; Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander; and White. Students at Washburn who report a category other than White are counted as minority students. In fall 2014, 82.2% of Washburn students (5,527) provided information on their ethnicity/race; the percentage of minorities is calculated based on the students for which ethnicity/race is known. Almost 60% (59.3%) of Washburn Tech students are postsecondary students and the rest (40.7%) are high school students. This is a shift from fall 2013 when almost two-thirds (66.2%) of Tech students enrolled at the postsecondary level. Postsecondary students declined by 47 students (6.1%) from fall 2013, whereas high school students increased by 102 students (26.0%). Student credit hours of 15,907 are higher than fall 2013 by 622 SCH or 4.1%. There are 17 students enrolled in the Bridge Program. Men account for almost two-thirds (65.6%) of the Washburn Tech student body. All of Washburn Tech students are Kansas residents. Minority students make up 32.8% of the Tech student population. 4 The majority (82.4%) of Washburn Tech students enroll part-time; only 17.6% enroll fulltime. The average age of postsecondary students is 26.7; the average age of high school students is 16.8. The average course load for a postsecondary student is 13.6 SCH; the average load for a high school student is 12.3 SCH. Table 12 provides fall 2014 SCH by program compared with fall 2013. The automotive service technician program generates the largest number of SCH (1,828) and accounts for 11.5% of total SCH at fall census. Practical nursing follows with 1,291 SCH; this program makes up 8.1% of total SCH. Other large programs generating over 1,000 SCH are Welding Technology (1,239 SCH), Computer Repair and Networking (1,140 SCH), Diesel Mechanics (1,100 SCH), and Health Care Technology (1,011 SCH). Note that some programs and courses begin after the 20 th day and are not counted at the enrollment census. Therefore, total headcount and SCH at the end of the term will likely be higher than are reflected at census. Enrollment at Kansas Board of Regents Institutions Appendix A provides fall 2013 and fall 2014 enrollment for the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) six public four-year universities excluding the special campuses (University of Kansas Medical Center and Kansas State University Veterinary Center), the community colleges, and the technical schools. 4 At Washburn Tech, 55.5% (676 students) have provided information on their ethnicity/race. Overall, fall 2014 enrollment at the six KBOR universities with 91,317 5 students increased from fall 2013 by 1,342 students or 1.5%. Enrollment increased at all six universities. The largest increase was at Wichita State University which increased by 453 students (3.1%), followed by Fort Hays State University which increased by 384 (2.9%). Enrollment increased at the other universities by 177 (0.7%) at the University of Kansas, by 168 (0.7%) at Kansas State University, by 81 (1.3%) at Emporia State, and by 79 (1.1%) at Pittsburg State University. enrollment at the 19 community colleges is 74,450, a decrease of 3,379 students (4.3%) from fall 2013. Enrollment at the six technical colleges increased by 407 students (6.3%) to 6,844 students. 5 Enrollment at the University of Kansas Medical Center and the Kansas State University Veterinary Medical School are excluded.
