ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORTING 2016 CATHOLIC EDUCATION, ARCHDIOCESE OF BRISBANE SCHOOL PROFILE School name Postal address St Benedict's Primary School PO Box 725, NORTH LAKES, QLD, 4509 Phone Email (07) 3481 4600 pmangohill@bne.catholic.edu.au School website www. stbenedicts.qld.edu.au/ Contact person Mark Creevey - Principal Principal s foreword St. Benedict's Catholic Primary School officially opened in 2008 with a population of 106 students and in 2016 has grown to 612 students. St. Benedict's Primary is a three stream school moving towards being a four stream school, with students in Prep to Year 6. The school is situated in the picturesque suburb of Mango Hill and this also one of the fastest growing areas in Australia. The Benedictine tradition and culture of our school is encapsulated in our Mission Statement that challenges us to "Live, Love, Learn and Celebrate" as we fulfil our school motto to "Walk in God's Ways". St. benedict's Primary School continues to grow in relationship with our Co-located school of St. Benedict's College. We work together to provide quality education for the children of Mango Hill and North Lakes. St. Benedict's Kindy is also co-located and began in 2014 with two classes. We look forward to the continued growth in our educational precinct towards 2017 at which time we will cater for students from Kindy through to Year 12. We have a staff of very dedicated teaching professionals, leading learning, catering for individual needs and setting high standards for all students. It is a very welcoming and supportive community. School facts St Benedict's Primary School is a Catholic school administered through Catholic Education, Archdiocese of Brisbane. Coeducational or Single sex Year levels offered: Primary Secondary P-12 Total student enrolments: 612 Girls: 319 Boys: 293 ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORT 2016 1

Characteristics of the student body At St. Benedict's Catholic Primary School in 2016 we have a population of 612 students from Prep to Year 6 coming from 412 families. We cater for a diverse range of learners and learning needs including students with special talents and those with special educational needs. Whilst our student population is predominately Australian born, approximately 6% were born overseas. Some of the places of birth include Spain, The Philippines, Guatemala, Venezuela, India, New Zealand, England, South Africa, Iraq, Syria and the USA. Some of the first languages spoken by our students include: Tagalog, Filipino, Hungarian, Japanese, Arabic and Spanish. Approximately 3% celebrate an Aboriginal or Torres Strait islander origin. Social climate We are a Catholic School which has a focus on the Benedictine traditions. These traditions promote the building of a welcoming and hospitable school environment. We espouse the core Benedictine charisms for living and learning together, these include: Hospitality, Compassion, Work, Prayer, Peace and Community. These charisms guide us in developing an inclusive and supportive learning environment. We take an educative approach to student behaviour support and have a school wide "Behaviour Education and Management Plan." Our response to bullying is that it is not acceptable and we promote our "WALK" (We Respect, Act Responsibly, Learn Together and Keep Safe) as a way of building positive relationships in our learning community. We have procedures in place to promptly address concerns including bullying. In recent years we have engaged a Student Pastoral Care worker who functions in an informal capacity to strengthen the relationships with staff, students and parents. Our student Council also works to build community and relationship with a "Children teaching and helping children" approach. Their student voice is promoted and celebrated within our school community. Curriculum - our distinctive offerings St. Benedict's School offers a vibrant educational curriculum from Prep to Year 6. Our teachers collaboratively plan, teach and assess students according to the Australian Curriculum. Our dedicated and professional teachers embrace curriculum changes as they engage in professional learning and development to ensure they can provide quality learning opportunities for all children in all areas of the curriculum. We value the contribution to learning made by our specialist teachers. Timetabled opportunities exist for Visual Arts, Music and Physical Education across Prep to Year 6. Chinese is our second language which commences in Year 5 along with our one to one Lap top program. In 2016 we welcomed the addition of our first Speech Pathologist to our St. Benedict's team. The school engages the expertise of an Instrumental Music teacher to provide parents with the opportunity of private tuition for their children in brass, woodwind, strings and gives students the opportunity to participate in the school bands. As an addition to the instrumental music program at St. Benedict's, private guitar and piano lessons are also available. ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORT 2016 2

Curriculum - our extra curricula activities At St. Benedict's we provide a range of extra curricula activities throughout the year. Before and after school clinics are offered in many team sports including Rugby Union, Cricket, Rugby League, soccer and Tennis. The Active After School program has continued to be popular at St. Benedict's with a variety of sporting pursuits including Basketball and Dance being provided. The teachers at St. Benedict's provide many of the extra curricula activities for our students with popular activities being Robotics and Bennies Bright Stars Dance troupe. Other activities available to students during the day include, Benedict Performers, Mini Singers, Junior Choir, Senior Choir and Junior and Senior Instrumental bands. During lunch times there are clubs in which students are invited to participate including Library Club and Dance. Parent, student and teacher satisfaction Parent, student and teacher satisfaction with the school is high with enrolment applications far exceeding our student capacity. Parents readily give strong positive feedback about St. Benedict's as a school and as a Catholic Learning Community, via survey responses, emails to school, verbal commendations and messages through the Parents and Friends Association. Many new families enrolling at St. Benedict's, note community sentiment and positive comments and feedback from existing families as one of the reasons for seeking enrolment at our school. Parent engagement Parents are most welcome to be involved in their child's education. It is actively encouraged by staff and promoted within our community. There are a range of opportunities for parents to be involved both formally and informally. Once the formal induction process to meet our legal compliance with Student Protection has been completed you will see parents involved in classroom activities, sporting events and excursion activities. Formal opportunities also exist with participation in our Parents and Friends association and our Pastoral School Board. Each class also has one or more parent Representatives who co-ordinate information between home and school. ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORT 2016 3
