International School of Bremen Parent Bulletin 18 2016/17 Illness We are very much aware of the nasty virus that is hitting many people at present. Please do keep your child at home if they are sick, but do let us know by email or telephone. The same illnesses surprisingly hit teachers too. We are trying our best to maintain normal classes but inevitably some have, and might in future, be combined. Staffing Many of you are aware that this week Mr José Caceres left us for a short sabbatical and will be back with us in September. As he worked mostly with ELC, we are strengthening that area, so please welcome Steven Webster who joins staff in that area. Moving Around the Building Please remember that parents should not enter learning areas without an appointment. This is so we can keep the children safe and make for efficient starts and ends to the day. If you are a parent who joins in our Parents English classes, please remember to only move around the building using the Main Corridor and back staircase to reach the teaching room with Mr Dalton. Do not take the opportunity to visit your child, it is so disturbing. Any urgent matters should be referred to the appropriate Head of School. Health Care After the coming holiday (school closed from 13-17 February), we unfold our new health support for students. Rather than sick or injured children reporting directly to Reception or the First Floor Office, they will now be directed to Room 144 and Mrs Garrett who is a fully certified nurse. The usual judgements will be made and you, as parents, contacted in the usual way. We hope this will both take the pressure off the school support staff and raise the level of medical support. We will review and evaluate the provision over the coming months. For our detailed Calendar of Events, turn to back pages www.isbremen.de 3 February 2017

Ballet We are pleased to announce that new ballet lessons for Grade 1-3 students will be starting on Tuesday, 21 February 2017 3.00-4.00pm Small Gym There can only be a limited number of participants. The first 15 parents to contact Mrs Dodds at ddodds@isbremen.de will reserve a space for their child. Trainer: Ms. Virginia Antonescu Science Department Newsletter We are sending you as a separate attachment the latest Science Department Newsletter for the month of January 2017. ISB Photo Calendar After the success of last year s photo calendar, we would like to repeat the activity this year, so please start collecting your photographs! We are looking forward to receiving and viewing them! As last year, please send your best images to: ddodds@isbremen.de Weekly Coffee Morning Get-Together Every Thursday, from 8.00am Café Unique For more information, contact anke.hoffmann@gmx.com Science Fair!! Wednesday, 8 February 2017 1.30pm Ground Floor Main Corridor and Foyer To be opened by Dr Ertan Göklü (Zarm Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity) Do come and support our students in their efforts! In her own words: Unbelievable, it s been 11 years at ISB. Mrs Tanja Balog Early Learnng Having lived over a decade in the United States, studied to be a teacher and worked there, it was quite a culture shock coming back. However, I finally got to enjoy Werder Bremen games live again at a great stadium and to raise my daughter in this wonderful city. My hobbies are: reading, writing, singing, sewing and spending time with my family and friends. I am constantly impressed by the good conduct of my former students and am looking forward to making more happy memories. INTRODUCING... 2 Parent Bulletin 3 February 2017

Photo by Colby Otero from Brooklyn, USA - Tangalla Morning Poetry by ISB Students At regular intervals, we will be publishing Secondary students poems that our English teacher Mr Thézé has put together into a small booklet. Here is the first, written by Nitharsan of Grade 6. In keeping with the poetry theme, please also see the below poster. If you are interested in taking part in the Poetry Slam, please contact: jonas.blendl@ewe.net. Visit to Sri Lanka I went to Sri Lanka But it was too hot But it was too loud But there were too many insects But there was too much dust But there were too many dogs and cats And cows standing in front of houses And palm squirrels inside And there was no internet connection. Library News World Book Database The ISB Library subscribes to World Book Online. Access to this great resource at school is through the Library catalogue. However if you would like to access from home by logging on through the school website, you must use the following user and password: Username: Bremen Password: School You should then have access to World Book Online, which includes resources for ELC, Elementary and lower Secondary, plus film clips, images, multiple-use ebooks and a Spanish Language database. Enjoy! 3 February 2017 Parent Bulletin 3

University and Career Guidance Counselling (Grades 9-12) Studying in Switzerland Students thinking about their future study plans may want to consider Bachelor programmes in Switzerland. Many universities offer courses taught fully in English alongside their French and German programmes. Switzerland is well known for its accredited Hospitality Programmes but has many more areas for students to choose between, including Engineering, Medicine and Physics. Switzerland ranks among the top ten countries worldwide in terms of research and development investments and is home to more than 100 Nobel Prize winners. Students are encouraged to contribute and develop into internationally-minded members of the community. Students also enjoy breathtaking natural beauty and a multitude of sporting opportunities. To find out more or to search for courses visit: http://www.bachelorsportal.eu/countries/27/ switzerland.html i-to-i Gap Year Teaching and Conservation Opportunities Taking a year out between school and university can be very beneficial for some students, giving them the chance to prepare for a career, boost their application or discover a new area of interest. i-to-i is a highly acclaimed organisation which offers students the opportunity to take a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course and teach in countries all over the world as well as to participate in operative conservation programmes, working with endangered species and wild habitats. In addition to teaching courses and paid internships, ito-i also offers travel experiences. For students who want to see more of the world but are nervous about travelling alone, these group trips are ideal! To find out more visit: http://www.i-to-i.com/ The Navigator Summer Business School, Munich This programme is designed to give engaged students an opportunity to explore the world of Business and think about their future study and career plans within the field. Students take part in innovative workshop sessions and project work. At the end of the week, students receive a reference and academic certificate to aid their university applications. This year, the programme runs from 2-7 July.
