MIDDLE SCHOOL & HIGH SCHOOL MAGNET CHOICE SCPS PRE-IB PREP ELIGIBILITY FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL Students must reside in Seminole County and have successfully completed the 5th grade. The magnet middle schools are composed of both in-zone and out-of-zone students. All out-of-zone students who are residents of Seminole county have the opportunity to apply to the magnet middle school of their choice. By signing the Middle and High School Magnet School/Program application, parents and students agree to the statements listed on the application. ELIGIBILITY FOR HIGH SCHOOL Students must reside in Seminole County and have successfully completed the 8th grade. By signing the Middle and High School Magnet School/Program application, parents and students agree to the statements listed on the application. ADMISSION Out-of-zone students must submit an application for admission to a magnet middle school. ALL high school students must submit an application for admission to a magnet high school program. COMMITMENT If selected, the out-of-zone student will remain in the program for a minimum of one year as long as all magnet requirements and commitments stated on the application are fulfilled. TRANSPORTATION Transportation is provided to students living more than two miles from the school. Out-of-zone magnet students meeting the criteria for transportation may be subject to bus rides up to 90 minutes each way (less than 10% of routes are 90 minutes). Centralized bus stops for out-ofzone magnet students may be located up to 1.5 miles from a student's residence. APPLICATION FACTS There is sibling link for the applicant who has a sibling that will be enrolled in the same magnet school/ program for the 2018-2019 school year.* All four magnet middle schools offer the SCPS Pre-IB Preparatory Program (See page 4). Out-of-zone students indicate their interest in the SCPS Pre-IB Preparatory Program on the Middle and High School Magnet/Program Application. In-zone students may select SCPS Pre-IB Preparatory Program on their middle school course selection sheets completed with guidance counselors in the spring. PREPARATION FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM For the highly motivated, college bound students, the International Baccalaureate Program at Seminole High School and Winter Springs High School offers college-level coursework that provides a distinct competitive edge. To ensure success in this rigorous and demanding program, Seminole County Public Schools has implemented a comprehensive 6th-12th grade continuum where coursework is integrated and sequential so that students can leverage learning to their maximum advantage. SCPS Pre-IB Prep Program is a curriculum strand only offered at the four district wide magnet middle schools. This course of study prepares students for advanced placement classes, honors classes and the IB Program at Seminole High School or Winter Springs High School. Students should only apply for the SCPS Pre-IB Prep Program if they are interested in a challenging academic curriculum. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS HOW TO SUBMIT A SCHOOL CHOICE APPLICATION? Applying online is easy to do and allows you to track your child s application and status. Prior to applying for a Choice program, we encourage you to attend the Open House for the magnet programs. HOW DO I KNOW IF MY APPLICATION HAS BEEN RECEIVED? You will receive a confirmation email that your application has been received. WHAT IF MY CHILD WANTS TO ATTEND HIS/ HER ZONED MIDDLE SCHOOL OR HIGH SCHOOL? Students who choose to attend their zoned middle school do not need to complete an application. Students who choose to attend the traditional program at their zoned high school do not need to complete an application. All students, in-zone and out-of-zone who are interested in attending a high school magnet program are required to submit an application. HOW WILL I FIND OUT ABOUT TRANSPORTATION? If a student is selected for a school/program and lives more than two miles from the school you will be contacted by the Transportation Department with specific information shortly before the start of school. For out-of-zone transportation information see page 2. WHAT DO THE ABBREVIATIONS ESOL AND IEP MEAN ON THE APPLICATION? ESOL: English for Speakers of Other Languages IEP: Individual Educational Plan HOW ARE APPLICANTS FOR A MAGNET SCHOOL/PROGRAM NOTIFIED? All students will receive a notification email. Specific details related to registration requirements and open house programs are included. Families are to accept their seat through the online portal by January 19, 2018 to guarantee placement. REQUIREMENTS & COMMITMENTS MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL MAGNET SCHOOL/PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for a school/program, students must reside in Seminole County. Applicants must successfully complete the 5th grade for middle school and the 8th grade for high school. Parents and students agree to the following conditions by signing the Middle and High School Magnet School/ Program Application. 1. HONOR CODE Students are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic integrity. In all years of participation in a magnet school/program, midyear exits are not permitted unless the school determines the student does not meet academic and/or program requirements. I understand that any out-of-zone student who exits a magnet program will return to his/her zoned school unless there is a Seminole County Public School Board approved transfer that allows the student to remain at the school where the magnet program is located. I understand that if a student declines the position once selected for the program, he/she will need to reapply to be reconsidered.
