Please contact the International Baccalaureate Organisation to do this. NOTE: Mr Walton will need to know this and you have been told this by him. It is your responsibility to contact him and make sure he has put you on the list in the IB system. If this has not been done already, it needs to be complete this week otherwise your IB results will not automatically be sent to UCAS universities and therefore there will be a delay in their reaction to your results. Next month is the 30 June deadline applications received after this date will automatically be entered into Clearing.(Clearing will open in August and allow you to seek an application to other UK universities beyond your chosen 5). www.isbremen.de 12 May 2017
Maths Support Many students benefit from some additional mathematics support and so Maths Support will, once again, be provided each afternoon from Monday to Thursday from 3.00-4.15pm and will be taken by the School's mathematics teachers on a rotational basis each afternoon in Room 219. The support is best suited to students who are able to identify a particular mathematical issue with which they are struggling and for which further explanation, usually fairly briefly, will be helpful, after which the students will get on with a number of exercises which will test their grasp of the newly acquired, or understood, skill. This kind of support is, perhaps, less useful for students who simply "don t get maths" and where students are in this situation, this should be discussed directly with the relevant mathematics teacher, but more useful for those who are managing some elements of mathematics well but who may be floundering with others. Students attend sessions on a voluntary basis because the initiative to take this opportunity must come from them if it is to be useful and they should not see it as way of cramming just before a major test but rather as an opportunity, one to one with a mathematics teacher, to gain greater understanding about a concept which they feel is poorly or inadequately understood. Students may attend on any day but they must be clear about what particular point they are struggling with so that the assistance provided can be targeted and make the most effective use of the limited time available. DofE News International School of Bremen DofE Unit Wins Operator Prize 2016 After the excellent ratings that our Duke of Edinburgh s team received after their Gold Audit last November, team members were delighted to learn that that they have now been awarded the Operator s Prize 2016. The judges were not only impressed by the work the team, led by Paul Bridge, invested in the transition to the Gold standard and that three team members are now being trained as auditors, thereby supporting DofE Germany with their magnitude of tasks, they were also full of praise for the hours that some of our DofE participants put in last year to support young refugees - their choice for the Service section of the Award programme. Well done to all involved! Programme Course in Bremen For the first time ever, the International School of Bremen will be hosting a Programme Course in Autumn, the basic course required by DofE team members to enable them to supervise DofE expeditions, for which our own team needed to travel to the South of Germany to accomplish. The DofE team is very excited about this new opportunity for the Unit, thus enabling them to reach out to more schools and youth groups in the region and involve more young people in this worthwhile programme. Students Well on Their Way to Bronze and Silver Our current DofE Students have showed much diligence, effort and commitment during the course of the year and are now in the final stages of their Bronze and Silver Award programmes. We will be reporting about their various involvement in the four DofE sections (Service, Skill, Physical and Expedition) very soon. Service Physical Expedition Skill Meet Our CAS Students... Jan, Grade 11 In October 2016, I started a school band with two of my friends and we were complete beginners, I mean we couldn t play anything! However, after practising for a few months on a weekly basis, we feel we have made some incredibly good progress. We now enjoy playing very much, though it can be challenging sometimes, and have even gained two new members. Being in a band with my friends brings us closer together and it is very inspiring to see how we progress and enjoy what we are doing. Ladies Stammtisch In German, Stammtisch is a regular meeting of a group of people, usually seated at the same (reserved) table. Please now read the following suggestion from ISB parent, Mrs Silja Reimann: Dear Ladies, We are happy to offer a regular Stammtisch for lunch for all ISB mums in our Restaurant Feines 1783, Am Markt 13, every Monday at noon. We have the choice between several separate rooms, depending on the size of the group. I need to know who is generally interested in the idea and, later on, who will be showing up. We need at least one day s notice, i.e. If we are meeting on a Monday, by Sunday at the latest. If enough mothers are interested, we will have our first Stammtisch meeting on Monday, 5 June. Please let me know by mobile: 0172-42 31 035 or send a mail to info@kleiner-ratskeller.com and I will set up a new ISB Stammtisch group on WhatsApp. Best wishes Silja Reimann (EL2 and Grade 1A mother) ISB Photo Calendar Do remember to keep sending in your best images for the month of May All photographs to: ddodds@isbremen.de. Mrs Ruth Holsten Library Mrs Holsten is from Tasmania. Initially, she studies animal systems management in New South Wales, graduating with merit. After nine months milking cows in Sweden on the International Agricultural Exchange Programme, she then decided that books were more interesting than cows! Her next career step was to study Library Information Management for six years, after which worked for 16 years at the State Library of Tasmania before relocating to Germany to reunite her husband s family. Mrs Holsten has been working in ISB s Library since 2006 and has thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of developing two bigger and better libraries at the old and new ISB schools. She derives particular job satisfaction from taking our Grade 11 IB students to Bremen University Library with its over 3 million books, only 5 minutes walk away from school. She also finds it very rewarding to work with students and staff from all over the world. Mrs Holsten s hobbies include reading, horse-riding, playing the horn, reading, gardening, reading, bees and reading... M. Slater, 2016 INTRODUCING... 12 May 2017 Parent Bulletin 5
