TerraNova Results, 2003-04 Page 1 2003-2004 Terra Nova CAT Achievemet Assessmet for Grades 3, 5 & 6 Itroductio I 2001-2002, the New Mexico Achievemet Assessmet was chaged to a orm-refereced, multiplechoice test called the Terra Nova CAT Complete Battery, Form C (Terra Nova CAT). Normed atioally i 2000, the Terra Nova CAT was chose from amog the available assessmets because it was deemed to most closely match the New Mexico cotet ad performace stadards for studets at grades 3-9. The subtests of the Terra Nova CAT are Readig, Laguage Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies ad Sciece. Uder stadardized test admiistratio, all studets are give the same directios, time limits, ad scorig criteria, with the goal of esurig fairess for all studets. Thus, the scores idicate where idividuals ad groups of studets stad i relatio to others locally as well as their peers across the atio. Purpose of This Report This report attempts to aswer the followig questios: 1. What is the overall academic performace of the 2003-04 studets i the Roswell Idepedet School Districts (RISD)? 2. How does academic performace i 2003-04 vary amog, ethicities, ecoomic levels, Eglish proficiecy levels ad special educatio program status? 3. How well are RISD studets performig o each objective measured by the test? Iterpretatio of Media Natioal Percetile Rak () Sice the Public Educatio Departmet (PED) reports results utilizig s, this report cotais s as well. To fid a group s media percetile rak, all idividual percetiles are ordered from largest to smallest. The middle score (half fall above it ad half fall below it) is the group s. If a group scored exactly like the atioal orm group, the would be 50, the atioal average. If a school s is 60, for example, we ca ifer that the middle studet i that school scored higher tha 60% of the studets i the atioal orm group. 2003-04 Third Grade New Mexico Achievemet Assessmet (TerraNova CAT) Summary Results 1. I March 2003, 552 RISD 3 rd grade studets took the stadardized admiistratio of the TerraNova. They scored above the atioal average ( of 50) o all subtests (Readig=50.6; Laguage Arts=57.6; Math =51.1; ad Total Score=54.8) except i Sciece=47.9 ad Social Studies=47.8. 2. I a ormal distributio, oe would expect to fid 25% of the studets scorig i the bottom quartile o each subtest. While 18.91% of the RISD 3 rd graders scored i the atioal orm bottom quartile i Readig, 16.8% fell ito the bottom quarter i Laguage Arts, 17.24% i Mathematics, 24.14% i Sciece ad 22.1% i Social Studies,. 3. There were 175 Aglo studets who took the TerraNova test. The highest score media for Aglo studets was 63.0 i Readig, while the lowest media was 57.0 i Mathematics.

The highest score media for the Hispaic studets was 52.6 i Laguage Arts, while the lowest media was 43.9 i Sciece. There were 18 Africa America studets who took the TerraNova test. The highest score media for the Africa America studets was 49.0 i Laguage Arts, while the lowest media was 32.0 i Mathematics. 4. Of the 552 3 rd graders i the stadardized admiistratio, 53 were classified as Eglish Laguage Learers (based o their limited proficiecy i the Eglish laguage). Their Total Score media was 25.0; the highest subtest was 32.0 i Mathematics, while the lowest media was 21.7 i Readig. 5. Studet eligibility for free or reduced-price luches was utilized as a ecoomic idicator, but scores for these groups were ot broke out by stadardized admiistratio or accommodatio. Of all the 3 rd grade studets who took the TerraNova, regardless of the settig, 495 qualify for free or reduced-price luches ad will be cosidered as comig from low-icome families for the purposes of this aalysis. Studets thusly deemed low-icome posted a Total Score media of 45.4. The highest score for the low-icome group was 46.8 i Laguage Arts, while the lowest media was 40.1 i Readig. 6. Sixty six of the studets who took the TerraNova received Special Educatio services. Their Total Score media was 15.7. The highest score media for the Special Educatio Studets was 28.7 i Sciece, while the lowest media was 11.7 i Readig. 7. I March 2003, third-grade studets correctly aswered 67.1% of the Readig questios, 68.2% i Laguage Arts, 75.0% i Math, 69.7% i Sciece ad 69.4% i Social Studies. 2003-04 Fifth Grade New Mexico Achievemet Assessmet (TerraNova CAT) Summary Results 1. I March 2003, 585 RISD 5 th grade studets took the stadardized admiistratio of the TerraNova. They scored above the atioal average ( of 50) o all subtests (Readig=54.1; Laguage Arts =53.4; Math =55.9; ad Total Score=56.8) except i Sciece=45.3 ad Social Studies=40.4. 2. I a ormal distributio, oe would expect to fid 25% of the studets scorig i the bottom quartile o each subtest. While 16.64% of the RISD 5 th graders scored i the atioal orm bottom quartile i Readig, 15.27% fell ito the bottom quarter i Laguage Arts, 17.64% i Mathematics, 22.39% i Sciece ad 24.32% i Social Studies. 3. There were 235 Aglo studets who took the TerraNova test. The highest score media for the Aglo studets was 67.0 i Readig ad Mathematics, while the lowest media was 55.8 i Sciece. There were 338 Hispaic studets who took the TerraNova test. The highest score media for the Hispaic studets was 49.8 i Mathematics, while the lowest media was 34.6 i Social Studies.

The highest score media for the Africa America studets was 31.0 i Mathematics, while the lowest media was 21.7 i Laguage Arts. 4. Of the 585 5 th graders i the stadardized admiistratio, 59 were classified as Eglish Laguage Learers (based o their limited proficiecy i the Eglish laguage). Their Total Score media was 26.5; the highest subtest was 27.0 i Mathematics, while the lowest media was 17.6 i Social Studies. 5. Studet eligibility for free or reduced-price luches was utilized as a ecoomic idicator, but scores for these groups were ot broke out by stadardized admiistratio or accommodatio. Of all the 5 th grade studets who took the TerraNova, regardless of the settig, 517 qualify for free or reduced-price luches ad will be cosidered as comig from low-icome families for the purposes of this aalysis. Studets thusly deemed low-icome posted a Total Score media of 41.0. The highest score for the low-icome group was 40.1 i Mathematics, while the lowest media was 31.7 i Social Studies. 6. Oe hudred twety-seve of the studets who took the TerraNova test received Special Educatio services. Their Total Score media was 14.0. The highest score media for the Special Educatio Studets was 23.6 i Sciece, while the lowest media was 14.0 i Mathematics. 7. I March 2003, fifth-grade studets correctly aswered 58.5% of the Readig questios, 59.4% i Laguage Arts, 66.7% i Math, 59.3% i Sciece ad 57.5% i Social Studies. 2003-04 Sixth Grade New Mexico Achievemet Assessmet (TerraNova CAT) Summary Results 1. I March 2003, 586 RISD 6th grade studets took the stadardized admiistratio of the TerraNova. They scored above the atioal average ( of 50) o all subtests (Readig=54.5; Laguage Arts =57.8; Math =61.5; ad Total Score=60.4) except i Sciece=45.4 ad Social Studies=47.1. 2. I a ormal distributio, oe would expect to fid 25% of the studets scorig i the bottom quartile o each subtest. While 13.21% of the RISD 6th graders scored i the atioal orm bottom quartile i Readig, 13.21% fell ito the bottom quarter i Laguage Arts, 13.14% i Mathematics, 23.55% i Sciece ad 22.01% i Social Studies,. 3. There were 200 Aglo studets who took the TerraNova test. The highest score media for the Aglo studets was 70.3 i Laguage Arts, while the lowest media was 62.7 i Sciece. There were 334 Hispaic studets who took the TerraNova test. The highest score media for the Hispaic studets was 56.7 i Mathematics, while the lowest media was 38.7 i Sciece. There were 17 Africa America studets who took the TerraNova test. The highest score media for the Africa America studets was 55.0 i Mathematics, while the lowest media was 30.3 i Sciece. 4. Of the 556 6th graders i the stadardized admiistratio, 36 were classified as Eglish Laguage Learers (based o their limited proficiecy i the Eglish laguage). Their Total Score media

Of all the 6th grade studets who took the TerraNova, regardless of the settig, 527 qualify for free or reduced-price luches ad will be cosidered as comig from low-icome families for the purposes of this aalysis. Studets thusly deemed low-icome posted a Total Score media of 49.2. The highest score for the low-icome group was 50.4 i Mathematics, while the lowest media was 35.5 i Sciece. 6. Oe hudred thirtee of the studets who took the TerraNova test received Special Educatio services. Their Total Score media was 16.0. The highest score media for the Special Educatio Studets was 19.8 i Mathematics, while the lowest media was 12.8 i Readig. 7. I March 2003, sixth-grade studets correctly aswered 64.5% of the Readig questios, 63.9% i Laguage Arts, 65.0% i Math, 58.0% i Sciece ad 59.5% i Social Studies.
