EMIS No: 105265 TRUST No: IT910/03 NPO No: 030-695NPO UMALUSI Provisional Accreditation No: SCH 004654 PA UKHAHLAMBA REGION TAX Exempt Sec 18A approval Information year 2015 1. ESTABLISHMENT & GROWTH ANDANTE is an INDEPENDENT or PRIVATE SCHOOL. We are registered with the Department of Education: EMIS No:500105265. Our school was established in 2000 with only eight learners. 2. SMALLER CLASSES We have had great success with the progress of our learners as our class sizes are smaller so that children receive individual attention. As a result we are able to extend the brighter child and help the slower learners, giving recognition for all the progress big or small. (We have learners who have come from Special Class and are now coping in our mainstream classes. There are also those who ve left and are now coping in mainstream High School.) 3. AN INCLUSIVE MAINSTREAM SCHOOL Andante is a mainstream School. We do, however, accept learners with learning difficulties into our Mainstream classes. Our children are very understanding of the problems of their peers. No ridicule or teasing will be tolerated. Understanding and empathy is encouraged. 4. SUBJECT CHOICES At ANDANTE we follow the National Curriculum. Other: Computer lessons Sports: Netball, soccer, athletics, chess, drum majorettes (girls), marching band (boys) cricket, hockey, swimming. Cultural: Speech & Drama, choir, Scripture Union, General Knowledge Quiz, Debate, Public Speaking, Art, Music and Dance 5. LANGUAGE At ANDANTE our medium of instruction is English. High Schools of today are very concerned that the Primary school children have very poor reading ability. In the smaller classes we are able to pay more attention to this problem. From 2012 IsiZulu has been taught as First Additional Language from grade 1-3. Afrikaans is taught as Second Additional Language in Grade 3. From Gr.4 parents may choose the First and Second Additional Languages between Afrikaans and IsiZulu. In grade 7 children choose one Additional Language. 6. REMEDIAL CLASSES Classes are available to help children who have difficulties in English Language learning. Here learners with literacy & reading problems are assisted to improve. These classes are attended by the children until they have achieved the required level of competency for their Grade.(Adagio Class) Reading support is given as a priority for all grades.

7. TUCK SHOP & LUNCH Our tuck shop is run by the school. Profits from these sales assist in the equipment purchases. All learners must provide their own lunch. 8. AFTERCARE At ANDANTE we have an aftercare facility for children who cannot leave the school premises within one hour after school has finished for the day. Lunch must be provided by parents for these children. The children are assisted with homework and activities are planned to keep them occupied. Aftercare fees are calculated according to the time the children leave school each day. We suggest that children also bring a change of clothes for after- care. 9. GRADE ONE Children born between 01/01/2008 and 30/05/2009 Children are tested for school readiness and maturity before being accepted into Grade One. For 2015, children born between 1January 2008 and 30 May 2009 may attend Grade One. Parents should however understand that some children need an extra year of school readiness learning.. 10. DOCTRINE & CULTURE We are a Multicultural Christian School. We encourage understanding, love & empathy in all our learners so as to be part of the ANDANTE FAMILY. 11. REPORTS Progress reports are issued quarterly for all grades. 12. UNIFORM ANDANTE uniforms can be obtained from Filcon Outfitters. See list attached. 13. TIME School gates open at 06h30 and are locked at 17h15 daily. 7h30 to 12h45 Mon-Thurs and 07h30 to 12h00 on Friday (Grade RR-2). 7h30 to 14h00 Mon Thurs and 07h30 to 13h00 on Friday (Grade 3-7 ) 14. SPORTS Our Sports Coaches prepare teams to play against other schools. Chess, Soccer, Netball, Cricket, Hockey, Athletics and Swimming. An Inter-house sports event takes place annually with learners competing for the team trophies. 15. ANNUAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP Is hosted by Andante and other Primary Schools are invited. They compete for the winning school and highest personal score trophies. 16. SQUAD: Drummies and marching band Girls and boys practise throughout the year on exciting routines which they perform at events to which we are invited (at least 3 per year). We are proud of our smart squad s achievements. They have to put in a lot of extra practises which require dedication and commitment from both parents and children.

17. ZULU DANCERS Our boys and girls practise throughout the year and have also been invited to perform at different events around Ladysmith. They do so with great enjoyment. 18. PERFORMANCES Our Squad and Zulu dancers perform at a number of different events during the year, namely, Ladysmith show, Andante Winter festival, Morêster children s home Fete, Open day at Andante and at other events to which we are invited. 19. TOURS & EXCURSIONS All grades do tours and excursions according to the needs and areas of study in the classes. 20. ANNUAL CONCERT AND ARTS EVENING These are evenings where our children reveal their talents in the arts. They are held once a year. 21. ANNUAL PRIZE GIVING In the Fourth quarter, we hold our Annual Prize Giving Function where Learners are not only rewarded for first position but also for dedication & improvement in all learning, sport and cultural areas. 22. MEETINGS Meetings of Parent / Teachers take place at least twice a year. At the same session, the Principal addresses parents concerning changes & happenings in the School. At these meetings, parents are encouraged to give their input as to decisions within the school e.g. Uniform changes or make queries regarding any issues in school. Any other meetings are at the request of parents or the school and are on a one to one basis. 23. TRUSTEES The school does not belong to any one individual but is run as a Trust. The Trustees meet quarterly to discuss school issues. 24. SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY / PARENTS REPRESENTATIVE COMMITTEE We do not have an SGB as the Trust makes decisions together with the School Management Committee and in consultation also with the PRC. 25. PARENT PARTICIPATION A SCHOOL IS ONLY AS GOOD AS ITS PARENTS PARTICIPATION It is essential parents share in their child s development both academically and on the sports field. Parents are invited to join the PRC to add their voice to the positive progress of our school. 26. FUNDRAISING PROJECTS Each year we embark on a different project to raise funds for equipment, books etc.

27. FINANCIALS Our school receives a subsidy from the Department of Education for Grades 1-7. This is however insufficient to achieve the High Standards we wish to achieve and maintain. We are therefore dependent on all school fees for our expenses. All staff salaries, bond payments, books etc. are paid for out of the school fees. We therefore rely on EARLY and PUNCTUAL PAYMENTS of all fees. WE ADVISE THAT ALL PARENTS PUT A STOP ORDER IN PLACE FOR MONTHLY OR QUARTERLY SCHOOL FEE PAYMENTS 28. 29. WHY IS ANDANTE SPECIAL? Homely atmosphere Children are happy. Children are allowed to develop emotionally and educationally. Sensitive and shy children blossom to become leaders and achievers More attention to bright and to slower children Smaller classes / groups therefore quickly see problems and work on the remedy Quickly see improvement and give recognition. We have to limit the number of children in a class requiring Special Remedial help so that our bright children do not become disadvantaged. Able to extend brighter children Where possible, we keep special class children in mainstream provided they come to us in time. Children quickly learn to accept the peers who are different in their school. Teasing is not tolerated. Understanding and empathy is encouraged. Teachers and caregivers are kept up to date with changes and improvements in the field of education weekly meetings and workshops.
