We hope to see many parents attend this assembly to acknowledge the efforts of the students selected for February. I am pleased to advise you that the Education Department has agreed to provide the school with a significant contribution toward replacing the fencing around the swimming pool. In addition, the pool entry will feature an improved design to ensure greater safety while maintaining accessibility. I thank the P&C and the Swim Club for agreeing to make a financial contribution toward the new fencing. DATE CLAIMERS 2017 Mon 13th March FEBRUARY STUDENT OF THE MONTH Principal s A/Tea 1.30pm @ Hall Thur 16th Mar QT PREP PHOTOS Making the Grade Fri 17th Mar INTERSCHOOL SPORT Winter Season Commences Each month, class teachers select one student per class who has displayed outstanding SPORTy behaviour. An invitation to attend a special afternoon tea with the Principal is sent home to this child s parents/ carers. After the afternoon tea, the students awarded Student of the Month are presented with their certificate on parade. Over the last few years, the pool has been broken into on numerous occasions, mainly through intruders cutting the wire fence. After a number of repairs, it is clear that the wire has deteriorated and needs to be replaced. Most of the pool fencing will be replaced with Crushed Top Spear Security Fencing, providing a strong, safe, secure and long term solution to the pool fencing requirements. On Friday 17 February, our student leaders attended a leadership day at Bremer State High School along with the student leadership teams from neighbouring primary schools. Our students reported that they learned more about leadership and gained confidence from participating in the day. RACEVIEW STATE SCHOOL Page 2 FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (Yr 2 Yr 3) Reading is Important Reading has always been an important skill. In our modern world it is more important than ever. Every day Counts! - Attendance Common reasons include illness, holiday or illness of a family member. Children learn about the importance of reading as they watch family members use reading and writing for everyday purposes. Reading with your child at home will help your child in all learning areas of school. Children see you reading and writing in everyday life reading for pleasure, sharing a story with your child, using a recipe, making a shopping list, writing a birthday card or reading street signs. This teaches them that reading and writing are useful skills in todays world. Often parents are asked by the school to listen to their child read at home. It s a good way of supporting your child s reading. Books may be borrowed from your school library or your local library. If you are having problems getting your child to school, a set routine can help: have a set time to go to bed have a set time to get out of bed have uniform and school bag ready the night before have a set time for starting and finishing breakfast set a time for daily homework activities speak about school positively be firm, send your child to school every school day including their birthday and the last day of term! Be confident that your child will learn to read. Year 2 Super Scientists! 2E and 2F have been investigating the strength of different materials and also whether or not certain materials are waterproof. If it is necessary for your child to be away, please call the student absentee line stating a reason for the absence on 3294 4166 or notify your child s class teacher in writing or via email. We appreciate your assistance with this. So far this year, students have been doing a great job of coming to school on time and ready to learn. Keep it up!! They have been predicting and testing these predictions just like real scientists. Great work Year 2! Francine Hayler Deputy Principal

RACEVIEW STATE SCHOOL Page 3 FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (Prep Yr 1) Queensland Times (QT) Making the Grade On Thursday 16 March, a QT photographer will be in the school to take photos of our 2017 Prep classes. A note home will follow in the coming days for parents and carers of Prep children but in the meantime, please see the QT flyer below for more information. Prep and Year 1 Update Our Preps are continuing their great start to the year. It is so pleasing to see smiling, happy faces and engaged minds when I am in the Prep area! Overall, the Preps behaviour has been very good as they adapt to their new environment and the school s SPORTy expectations. In Prep, our attendance has been excellent, so far averaging 94.6%! Keep up the great work Preps and parents! Our Year Ones are also settling into the start of the year nicely. Recently, we have been speaking about expectations in the eating area and toilets during and after lunch breaks. Parents, please support us by reminding your child about being a SPORTy student by being in the right area at all times, sitting down while eating, using the toilets appropriately and following teacher directions. Our Year 1 attendance is sitting at 89.8% which is a little lower than we are aiming for. Mrs Hayler has an interesting graphic in her newsletter article which shows that 1 day off every fortnight adds up to missing more than a whole year over the course of 12 years of education! Parents and carers please ensure you are giving your child every chance to succeed by having them at school all day, every day. Craig Jordan Deputy Principal
