Your résumé needs to include the following: and Contact Information (School ID#, Cell Number, Home phone Number, Home Address, Email address, Current Level) Academic Record with info on Class Rank, GPA, and AP classes, etc. School Activities Community Activities Work Experiences Honors and Awards Other Items of Interest (such as personal interests that are not covered in the above categories or a short personal statement indicating obstacles you have overcome, like a learning disability, personal or family setback, or unexpected change in circumstances) Each of the above should be explained or described when necessary. Dates and corresponding grade level needs to be designated for school activities, community activities, work experience, and honor and awards. Tips/Hints: A poorly written résumé can be worse than no résumé at all. It should be proofread (more than once) to ensure correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. The résumé should be in a professional-looking and easy-to-read font, such as Times New Roman or Arial. The formatting should catch the eye of the recipient and bring attention to key items. Be honest. When students lie or even stretch the truth on their résumé s, it can come back to haunt them later, particularly when it comes to things like GPA and test scores. Read your résumé carefully to ensure all of the information is accurate. EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: List all activities, inside and outside of school, in which you have been a participant. PART 9 ESSAY Please respond to the following essay prompt using a Microsoft Word document. Attach it to your application as a one page, 12-point font, double spaced, typed document. Scholarship, Leadership, Character and Service are the four pillars of the National Honor Society. What is the importance of service, and how has service impacted your life? How do you believe it will impact you in the future (career, aspirations, education, etc.)? PART 10 TEACHER RECOMMENDATIONS You will need to ask for THREE typed and signed letters of recommendation from one present or past teacher, one person other than a teacher that works in education, and one person that knows you outside of the school setting EXCEPT a GUARDIAN, RELATIVE or PARENT. When a recommendation letter is returned to you, please ensure that it is sealed in an envelope with the recommender s signature on the seal. Furthermore, do not open the envelope for any reason. Failure to comply may have serious consequences as to whether or not you are accepted into the National Honor Society. YOU are responsible for turning in all three recommendation letters by February 2, 2018 with your packet. *Please note that an application will be regarded as incomplete without all three recommendation letters. Suggestions: When approaching someone for a letter of recommendation you should have a résumé on hand to give to them in case they need it to list your accomplishments. You should be clear about the purpose of the letter and inform the person what the letter should address. Choose people that will make the letter personal and not just use a generic template. Always have an envelope to give to the person writing your letter, so it will be sealed and signed when you pick it up. PART 9 If suitable, offer for the letter to be dictated to you so you may type it for them. Always say please and thank you. A thank you email or note is recommended. RT 8 NHS Application 5
