Marian Catholic College 185 WAKADEN STREET, GRIFFITH NSW 2680 No 24 TELEPHONE: (02) 69692400 WEBSITE: www.mccww.catholic.edu.au Timetable Week 4 Aug 8 2014 August 8 Feast of St Mary Mackillop of the Cross Mary Mackillop was born in Melbourne in 1842 and died in Sydney on 8 August 1909. She took the religious name Mary of the Cross. Responding to the isolation of colonial families, she pioneered a new form of religious life to provide education for their children. She and her sisters shared the life of the poor and the itinerant, offering special care to destitute women and children. She is remembered for her eagerness to discover God s will in all things, for her charity in the face of calumny, and for her abiding trust in God s providence. O God, source of all goodness, who has shown us in Saint Mary a woman of faith living by the power of the cross, teach us, we pray, by her example to live the gospel in changing times and to respect and defend the human dignity of all in our land. Through our Lord, Dear Parents, Students and Friends Amen By now, everyone driving down Wakaden St has noticed the large cross at the front of the college. Our maintenance staff, Warren Bock and Simon Aventi are now working hard to make a reflective garden around the cross. This will be completed in the coming weeks, ready for spring! It will have raised garden beds which represents our four Houses; McAuley-named for the venerable Catherine McAuley, who founded the Sisters of Mercy Congregation in Dublin, Ireland, in 1831. Patrick-named for St Patrick s School, which the Sisters of Mercy established in 1921 in Griffith. Marcellin-named for Saint Marcellin Champagnat, a Marist Father, who founded a Congregation of teaching Marist Brothers, in Lavalla in France in 1817. Brendan-named for St Brendan s, the school begun by the Marist Brothers in Griffith in 1950. Progress on the new buildings, car park and drop off/pick up has been slow and steady with final engineering reports and building designs being completed and very soon the project will be put out for tender. It is hoped that this will be completed by the start of the 2015 school year. Another exciting project will be the refurbishment of the Woodwork and Metalwork rooms over 2015! Last Wednesday, the community farewelled our Pastoral Care Worker, Donna Piromalli. Donna is leaving us to focus on her business, Griffith Counselling Service. Thank you Donna for your care and support of members of the Marian family. You will be sorely missed. Finally, everyone is invited to join us in the Marcellin Hall for the Feast of the Assumption Mass at 10am next Friday, 15 August. Peace and Best Wishes Principal

UPDATED 2014 MATHS CHALLENGE RESULTS The College started this year s Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians on the first 3 weeks of Term 2. This is a problem-solving activity organized by the Australian Mathematics Trust which is aimed at the top 15% of students in their year level. Students received a problem booklet containing 6 problems. They were required to present written solutions to as many of these problems as they can. The problems were challenging and required time and persistence but were based on Mathematics which should be known at that level. Students work with a partner on all the 6 problems. I congratulate the following students on their efforts in attempting the Maths Challenge Stage problems. The fact that they participated indicates a level of commitment necessary to meet the challenge and participating to the best of one s ability and learning in the process.
