Welcome To Callan School Thank you for your interest in studying with us. In this booklet, you will find information about Callan School and the Callan Method. This booklet contains some very useful information. However, if you have any questions, please contact us at the school. Callan School is the largest private school in London teaching English as a foreign language. We use the Callan Method, and we guarantee that, compared to any other method, we can teach English in a quarter of the time. We teach General English, specialising in listening and speaking practice. Students study in small groups; there is an average of eight students in a class. The Callan Method was created by Robin Callan in 1960. He established the Callan School in Oxford Street, London in the early 1970s and we have been here ever since. Mr Callan still plays an active role in the running of the school. We look forward to meeting you. How to contact us Telephone: +44 (0) 207 437 4573 Fax: +44 (0) 207 494 3204 e-mail: csl@callan.co.uk In order to help you when you telephone us or come to the school in person, we have the following reception desks: Brazilian, Polish, Turkish, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Czech. All our receptionists also speak English. Before starting your lessons here, you will spend some time with a teacher, who will find your individual level and explain how the Callan Method works. You should book this interview in advance, although we may be able to see you the same day. Just come to the school and talk to one of our reception staff. You can normally begin your lessons on any day of the week and choose a timetable that is perfect for you; the school is very large and we run classes at almost every level throughout the day. Callan School can help anyone who needs better English, from beginners learning the fundamentals to higher level students who need more fluency and confidence. Also, with our system of Trial Lessons, you can attend lessons for 3 days to decide if you like the school. We are confident that you will be happy. However, if you are not completely satisfied and do not wish to continue, you pay nothing (see Page 4 for more about Trial Lessons). School opening times Callan School is open from Monday to Friday, 8.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. We also open on Saturdays from 10.30 a.m. to 16.30 p.m. for enquiries and student level tests. We are open all year, except for public holidays and a short period at Christmas. 1

Robin Callan and the Callan Method Robin Callan is the creator of the Callan Method. He owns the Callan School in London s Oxford Street. He also runs Callan Publishing Limited, which supplies his English language textbooks to schools across the world. Robin Callan was born in 1932 and grew up in Ely, Cambridgeshire. In his early twenties, he went to Italy to teach English in Salerno. Although he enjoyed teaching, Robin thought that the way in which teachers were expected to conduct language lessons was inefficient and boring. He became fascinated by the mechanisms of language teaching and learning, and was sure that he could radically improve the way English was taught. He remained in Italy and started to write his own books for teaching English as a foreign language. historical meeting place for many famous Cambridge University students and important figures from English literature such as Rupert Brooke, Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster. Mr Callan now lives in Grantchester but still plays an active role in the management of Callan School. He used these in his own classes and, over the following ten years, gained an immense amount of practical experience and a reputation for teaching English quickly and effectively. In the early 1970s, he returned to England and opened a school on Oxford Street. As his teaching method became more and more popular with students, the school grew and moved to larger premises. Robin continued to work on his Callan Method books, and today, with an average of 1,600 students passing through its doors every day, Callan School is the biggest private English language school in the world, and the method is used by schools all over the world. Robin Callan has always been passionate about English literature, especially poetry. For this reason, he bought The Orchard Tea Garden in Grantchester, a tourist attraction near Cambridge and a Mr Callan, the creator of the Method, says: The secret of success in learning a language is to repeat, repeat and repeat... and speak without thinking... and don t worry! You ll get there. The result is guaranteed, no matter what happens. 2

Learning English with the Callan Method is fast and fun! The Callan Method The Callan Method is a rapid teaching method created specifically to improve the listening comprehension and speaking abilities of students in an intensive atmosphere. The teacher is constantly asking you questions, which means that you are hearing and using the language as much as possible. This allows you either to do extra revision or move up to a higher class if suitable. In this way, every student is more able to learn at their own speed, and does not have to progress at the rate of the slowest pupil, or be hurried along too quickly. The Callan Method uses a carefully organised and structured script of approximately one thousand pages, and both vocabulary and grammar are introduced in a programmed way, with systematic revision and reinforcement. The reading and writing aspects of the language are also carefully programmed into the course so that you revise and consolidate what you have learned. In the lesson, the teacher corrects your pronunciation, grammar and sentence structure as you speak. In this way, you learn about your mistakes at the moment you make them, and are immediately helped to correct yourself. The teacher keeps the lesson moving quickly in order that you learn to understand English when it is spoken at its natural speed. This also guarantees efficient use of lesson time and means that everyone is concentrating hard all the time. Callan School has a flexible class management system. When you first arrive at the school, your level is determined by a teacher and you are placed into an appropriate class. However, if, over time, the class becomes too difficult or too easy for you, the school may suggest that you move to another class, and you can also ask to move if you wish. The combination of a well-structured course and constant teacher attention means that you are closely monitored and your speed of learning is assessed continuously and so accurately that examination results can be guaranteed. For more information regarding the Callan Method, please go to: www.callan.co.uk 3

Information about Trial Lessons See if the Callan Method is right for you Students need to feel secure in their choice of the method they will use to learn English. In order to offer our students the best possible start, we offer 6 trial lessons, which you can take over three consecutive days*. It is very unlikely that any other school will offer the same opportunity to try their classes because they are worried that students will just do the trial lessons and then decide not to enrol. You only pay for the trial lessons if you subsequently enrol on a course, at which time a cost of 4 will be charged for each trial lesson taken. Although the Callan Method is explained to you before you start your lessons, please remember that this will probably be a new way of learning for you, so it is very important to be ready for, and open to, a different kind of language lesson. You will very soon get used to it! To learn more about Trial Lessons, please call +44 (0) 207 437 4573 or e-mail csl@callan.co.uk *This offer is available all year, except during July and August, and is available to all students except those who book through an agency. 4
