What is AP? AP stands for Advanced Placement. College level courses that are offered for high school credit. Students have the ability to earn college credit(s) by taking a test in May. There are many classes and disciplines to choose from: English, math, social studies, the arts, etc.
What is the AP Capstone Academy? An answer to a community need for achieving students. A rigorous academic experience for students who want to attend a 4 year university. A program that will make students competitive in the college application process. A small learning community that will focus on the individual student by providing academic support.
Why Consider the AP Capstone Academy? College has become much more competitive over the last several years. Last year: 35,748 people applied to UNC-Chapel Hill--Only 4,100 Freshman were enrolled. In 2015: 13,083 people applied to Appalachian State. 3,049 were enrolled. In 2015: 21,104 people applied to NC State. 4,212 were enrolled.

What are the Benefits of the AP Capstone Academy? The potential to earn a minimum of 18 credit hours free of charge. Individual student support in a small learning environment. Student choice of AP and Honors classes. Student choice research projects. Opportunities for field trips abroad to further student learning.
What are the Requirements for the AP Capstone Academy? All Academy students will take at least 6 AP classes during their high school career. Several AP classes will be required. All Freshman who participate in the academy will take AP Earth Environmental Science. All Sophomores will have a choice of an AP Elective.
What are the Requirements for the AP Capstone Academy? Juniors will take AP Seminar and AP classes of their choosing. Seniors will take AP Research and AP classes of their choosing. Students are able to take more than 6 AP classes during their high school career.
What is AP Capstone? A certification/diploma program that features two courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. These courses will develop skills students need for college. AP Capstone teaches critical thinking, collaboration, research, time management and presentation skills. Students will choose projects based on their own passions and interests.
What is AP Capstone? AP Seminar will be taught Junior year, Research will be taught Senior year. Students enrolled in the AP Academy will be part of the AP Capstone program. In order to complete the Capstone program students must take 6 AP courses (one is Seminar and one is Research)
What is an AP Capstone Certificate? An AP Capstone certificate is presented to students who met the requirements of the program. -The student took at least 6 AP classes -One course was AP Seminar and one was AP Research
What is an AP Capstone Diploma? A diploma presented by the College Board to any student who meets the requirements: -The student took at least 6 AP courses -One course was AP Seminar and one was AP Research -The student received a 3 or higher on all 6 AP exams.

How do I apply for the AP Capstone Academy? There are two ways to apply: Paper Pencil Application is available from the counselors. Apply online. Go to the SWRHS homepage and look for the link: AP Capstone Academy Application. Applications will be due Friday, March 2, 2018
