College Application Process 1. Use your Naviance/Family Connections account to build your list of Colleges I m Thinking About and move those schools you ll definitely be applying to, to the Colleges I m Applying To page. It is recommended that you select about six colleges. Be certain, after discussion with your counselor, that you have a reasonable spread in admissions requirements. For example: Choice 1: A top college, even if it is a reach Choice 2: A realistic or target choice Choice 3: A choice which offers an excellent chance for admission
College Application Process 2. You should have requested 2-3 letters of recommendation from teachers, your counselor, a coach etc. by now, so add these recommenders to your Naviance account (under Colleges I m Applying To ) so they can upload those letters and forms (if required) for electronic submission. Always request letters of recommendation well in advance and always ask in person! Confirm with your recommenders which colleges you want them to submit their letters & teacher forms to. Remember, some colleges will only accept 1-2 letters of recommendation electronically through Naviance/eDocs, so you need to make it clear to your recommenders which schools they are submitting to!
College Application Process 3. Complete and submit the required college application for each school to which you are applying. (These applications are almost always found and submitted online, including the Common App which is used by many colleges.) *When using the Common App you ll need to Match the Common App to Naviance (see instruction sheet in your packet).
College Application Process When you submit your applications directly to the colleges electronically you typically include the application fee and the application essay (if required). You should always submit your application well before the deadline date. The earlier an application is received by the college the more favorably it is viewed.
College Application Process 4. Request transcripts for your college applications in Naviance and then Submit a Transcript Request form to the SHS Counseling Office for each college to which you have applied at least 2 weeks before the college s application deadline! Keep in mind that the guidance office will be closed during the holiday vacation from December 23 rd at Noon until January 4 th at 7:00AM, and transcripts will not be available during this time period.
College Application Process 5. Request that your official SAT/ACT scores be sent directly through the testing services (collegeboard.com or actstudent.org) well before your college application deadlines. Both testing services charge a fee for sending scores
Upon receiving a Transcript Request form, the counseling office will submit the following to your colleges. Official Academic Transcript Counselor Recommendation Form (and Written Evaluation if requested well in advance) School Report Form(s) (if required) Senior Year Course Schedule Suffield High School Profile Most Current Senior Report Card (We will automatically send Q1 & Q2 Report Cards for all schools applied to)
Matching the Common App with Naviance Create a Common App account - (commonapp.org)! Remember to use an email address you will check and use daily and write down the password you choose. Click on the Education section and select SHS as your high school. You will need to answer several other questions in this section before it will let you proceed. You will need to add at least 1 college to your common app account under the College Search tab.
Click on the My Colleges tab and complete the Recommenders and required FERPA on the Common App under Release Authorization. It is recommended that you waive your right to access recommendations, making them stronger in the eyes of colleges. Once the FERPA is complete, go back to your Naviance account and click on the Colleges I m Applying to tab. This is where you ll need to add your colleges that you know you ll be applying to.
To finalize the process, enter the email address you used for the Common App and make sure your date of birth is correct before clicking Match. Other Reminders: 1- Remember to move/add colleges you know you re applying to the Colleges I m Applying to screen. 2- Remember you need to have asked the teacher in person first, before you request the teacher recommendation in Naviance! Also, remember not all colleges want or need multiple Letters of Recommendation. 3- Remember you must still submit a Transcript Request Form to the counseling office in order for your credentials to be sent electronically!
College App Help Tuesdays! Counselors will be in the Commons on the next 4 Tuesdays during Period 7 to assist with your College Application questions! September 15 th, 22 nd, 29 th & October 7 th Bring your Chromebook and your Naviance/Common App login info.
