1 UPDATED GUIDELINES READ CAREFULLY! The Spirit of Midway Award is a partnership created by the MISD Education Foundation and the Midway High School PTA to promote and recognize the achievement, initiative and community service of MHS students. It is voluntary, noncompetitive and open to all current MHS students. The award culminates with a recognition event each spring. Students must submit an application between January 22 and 26, 2018 to be considered for the Spirit of Midway Award. Early applications will not be accepted. To earn the award, a student must qualify in three areas: Grades Earn 80 or above in each class for the fall semester (Multiplier does apply) Campus Involvement Participate in at least 2 extracurricular MHS student groups Community Service Perform at least 20 hours of voluntary community service on at least two different qualifying projects from Jan. 1, 2017 to Dec. 31, 2017* *Note: Credit for community service and campus involvement for incoming freshmen and new students to MHS begins June 4, 2017. The following steps must be completed in order to qualify: 1. Complete Application Form. 2. Attach copy of fall semester report card OR copy of semester grades from HAC. 3. Complete MHS Campus Involvement Form with signatures. 4. Complete Community Service Forms (Separate Community Service Form for each activity must be included even if separate documentation letter is attached). 5. Turn in completed packet* to Spirit of Midway box at Counselor s Office between January 22 and 26, 2018 during regular Counselor s office hours (8-4:30). *CHECK YOUR APPLICATION CAREFULLY! You cannot be given a chance to resubmit after the application due date. Spirit of Midway activities might help you qualify for the Congressional Award for youth involvement. 3 Spirit of Midway 2017-2018 Guidelines for MHS Campus Involvement Joining with other students who share like interests encourages personal growth, strengthens academic experiences and fosters skills in teamwork and leadership. Typically, any MHS student organization which requires some commitment outside the regular school day will meet the involvement requirement. The appropriate Midway teacher, sponsor, coach or staff member will validate the participation by signature. Please remember that you may not apply service hours that benefit your campus involvement group or club to the community service portion of this application. 5 Spirit of Midway 2017-2018 Guidelines for Acceptable Community Service *******Updated 2017******* MISD Concession Stand service will not count toward Spirit of Midway volunteer hours. 20 hours of community service provided to at least two organizations required to qualify for award. Service hours must be performed without pay, compensation or reward and with adult supervision. Mandatory or court-ordered community service does not apply. Strive for activities that benefit the community at large and not only your personal, school or church family life. You may count hours that you earn through your church and school, but please make sure they align themselves with the SoM guidelines. Participation in an event does not constitute community service; you must work for or at the event in some capacity.
