Villa Maria Academy GENERAL Policies Music Enrichment Lessons are generally a yearly commitment. A total of 27 half-hour lessons is the goal for 2014-2015. We do realize, however, that extenuating circumstances do occur. We strive to instill leadership and service in the IHM tradition in Villa Maria Academy students. Commitment is definitely a value in leadership and an expectation of service. Communication with the girl s Music teacher is extremely important and strongly encouraged. 1 Instrument: Every student needs a properly maintained and tuned instrument for practice. For voice students, the voice is your instrument. Keyboards (at least 76 keys) are acceptable for first year piano students. 2 Practice: A minimum of 15-20 minutes of practice every day is necessary if the student is to acquire any degree of skill on the instrument or the proper use of her voice. 3 Attendance: a students should be on time for their scheduled lessons and have all materials needed for the lesson. If a student is late for a lesson, she will lose valuable lesson time. b any student who forgets to come to a lesson forfeits that lesson. c missed lessons with an advance notice will be rescheduled. There will be a maximum of three (3) cancellations per school year (excluding missed lessons due to weather related school closings). Missed lessons without notice will NOT be rescheduled. 3

d on snow days, which warrant a 1 or 2 hour delay, lessons which are scheduled in the morning will be cancelled, and lessons will be rescheduled for a later date (during school hours). If the school is closed due to a snow storm or other reasons, lessons scheduled on that day will be rescheduled during school hours. Those who prefer not to miss a class, will be rescheduled, if possible, during the month of May. e lessons will not begin until payment is received unless there has been adequate conversation with the student s Music teacher and the coordinator of Music Activities. 4 Withdrawal & Refund Policy: Payment Option #1 (one full payment) Withdrawal ---prior to the 4 th scheduled lesson in the fall 75% refund ---after the 4 th scheduled lesson in the fall 50% refund ---prior to the 4 th scheduled lesson in January 25% refund ---after the 4 th scheduled lesson in January no refund Payment Option # 2 (two installments) Withdrawal ---prior to the 4 th scheduled lesson of the term 50% refund ---after the 4 th scheduled lesson of the term no refund Band: Mr. Michael Norton vmaband@gmail.com Choir: Sr. Margaret Logrip & mlogrip@villamaria.org Miss Jennifer Connors jconnors@villamaria.org Guitar: Mr. Dominic Mastrangelo mrdmguitar@verizon.net Handbells: Miss Jennifer Connors jconnors@villamaria.org Piano: Miss Candace Creamer ccfoxcat@aol.com Strings: Mrs. Lori Zimmerman travelingmusician@gmail.com Tonechimes: Miss Jennifer Connors jconnors@villamaria.org Voice: Miss Michelle Creamer MichelleCreamerGreco@gmail.com Coordinator of Music Activities: Sr. Margaret Logrip mlogrip@villamaria.org 4

Villa Maria Academy BAND Information Band instrumental music instruction is open to every student entering grades 4 8 on all brass, woodwind, and percussion concert band instruments. Band is a performance-oriented activity, and students have the opportunity to perform in various school and public venues, including, but not limited to: Christmas & Spring concerts, a spring recital, select liturgies and masses, as well as auditions for Archdiocesan Band ensembles. Below are the details about this program: Lesson schedule: Individual band lessons are held on Mondays on a rotating schedule during the school day so that students will avoid missing the same class in one trimester. Lessons will begin on Monday, September 15, for all returning and new band members. Families that wish to schedule band lessons after school on Mondays between 3:00-4:00pm can be made upon request, and depending on availability might be held as small groups based on demand. Band lesson schedules will be posted in multiple locations: the Music Studio, on the Take Note Wall by the Computer Lab, as well as posted online and via email regularly. Tuition: The annual fee for Band Lessons for the 2014-2015 school year totals $775.00 for 27 private half hour sessions. We offer two payment options: Option 1: Payment in full will be due at the first scheduled lesson in September. Option 2: First 50% due at the first scheduled lesson in September ($387.50); Second 50% due at the first scheduled lesson in January ($387.50) Checks must be made payable to the band teacher, Mr. Michael Norton, not VMA. Band students enrolled in any other VMA Music Enrichment Program receive a 10% annual discount on their band tuition! Please indicate this on your child s Band Registration Form if applicable. For additional information on Lesson Fees, please refer to General Procedures in this Handbook. Instrument rentals: All enrolled band students studying a band instrument will need to provide their own band instrument for lessons and band rehearsals. Affordable quality instrument rentals are available for families at Villa Maria Academy through Music & Arts Center, http://www.musicarts.com/. Music & Arts Center even provides convenient school delivery throughout the school year for band instruments, repairs, and materials. For questions or concerns about instruments, contact the band director, Mr. Norton: vmaband@gmail.com 5

Band Music Resources: music for Band lesson, ensemble, and Archdiocesan ensemble auditions will be available to practice and rehearse via SmartMusic (see below) and band music folders during the school year. We will also utilize the internet via the St. Aloysius Academy eboard (password: wildcats ), our academy s brother band program. In addition, beginning band students will use the band lesson book Essential Elements for Band, book 1, which can be ordered with their instrument rental. SmartMusic: to facilitate individualized student progress and support, all band students subscribe to the interactive music learning software and online program, SmartMusic, http://www.smartmusic.com/. This is the nation s most effective and popular instrumental music software program, allowing for lesson and band music practice that encourages and addresses evolving assessment standards and accountability requirements for learning instrumental music in the 21 st century. In addition, SmartMusic is available as an ipad app, so your child can practice anytime, anywhere! The annual subscription fee is subsidized 50% as part of each band student s tuition, which equals a fee of only $20.00 per student. This fee would be paid after your child is registered for lessons (microphone required for PC/Mac users). Senior Band: experienced band students from Grades 5-8 will rehearse as an ensemble on Monday mornings from 8:00am-8:30am in the Music Center, Room 14, Terrace Floor, starting on September 22, 2014. Reminders about the schedule will be emailed to Senior Band parents. For the integrity of the group, all members must be present at weekly rehearsals. Junior Band: beginning band students will rehearse as an ensemble after reaching sufficient skills to play their individual instruments. Rehearsals are held on Mondays during 2 nd lunch recess starting in mid-november, and continue through April. For the integrity of the group, all members must be present at weekly rehearsals. Band Only : Band Students taking instrumental lessons privately outside of school are eligible to enroll in Senior Band as Band Only members by adhering to the qualifications below: be able to read music pledge to participate in all rehearsals and performances for the entire school year prepare music on her own & with her private teacher (please provide on form below) audition with Mr. Norton to determine eligibility for band participation commit to audition for Archdiocesan Band and/or other respected ensembles The annual fee for Band Only students is $125.00. Villa Maria Academy CHOIR Information Choir enhances our Liturgical Celebrations and St. Augustine tells us that anyone who sings prays twice. Since one of Villa Maria Academy s goals is to educate young women in the IHM tradition of leadership and service, Choir offers an opportunity to display leadership and give service. Choir members in Grades 4 to 8 will be providing the musical support for our School Masses. These singers will also perform in the Annual Spring Concert when they become a Show Choir and entertain through singing and creative movement. As Choir these young women will use their voices to praise the Lord; as Show Choir, they will use their voices and personalities to be theatrical. Sr. Margaret and Miss Connors enjoy the opportunity to work with these young singers. As is our tradition, we will ask Grade 3 students to become the Choir for the First Holy Communion Mass on Saturday, April 18, 2015. They will also be the music support for the final Mass of the school year in June. We will also be asking Grade 7 students to become the Choir for the Baccalaureate/Graduation Mass on Thursday, June 4, 2015. Sr. Margaret and Miss Connors will be working with these classes and will be eager to spend time preparing the students for these very special events. Membership in the Villa Maria Academy Choir is a yearly commitment. The fee for the Program is $100.00 for the year. We offer two payment options: Option 1: Payment in full will be due at the first scheduled lesson in September. Option 2: First 50% due at the first scheduled lesson in September. Second 50% due at the first scheduled lesson in January. Checks should be made payable to Villa Maria Academy. Students in Grades 4 & 5 will rehearse with Sr. Margaret and Miss Connors on Wednesday during the Lunch/Recess period (12:35 1:05) in the Rehearsal Room on the Terrace Floor. 8

Students in Grades 6-7-8 will rehearse with Sr. Margaret and Miss Connors on Wednesday during the Lunch/Recess period (1:05 1:30) in the Rehearsal Room on the Terrace Floor. Before a major performance (Christmas ant, Catholic Schools Week Liturgy, Spring Concert) additional practices may be scheduled during the Lunch/Recess period. There is one afterschool rehearsal for the Spring Concert. This year this practice will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2015. Because it is a mandatory rehearsal it will be noted on the Academy School Calendar. Arrangements have been made that this Music Rehearsal will take precedence over all other after school activities. Solo singers for Liturgies will be chosen from Choir Members or Voice Students. Solo singers will practice before school from 7:50 to 8:10 or after school from 3:30 to 3:50. Individual arrangements will be made to accommodate those involved. Solo singers are selected through audition with the Choir teachers. Solo singing is voluntary and open to all members of the Choir or Voice. It is strongly encouraged that students studying private Voice lessons also be active Choir members. Since Villa Maria Academy has many talented singers, this is one of the most difficult decisions for the Choir teachers. It is extremely important for the integrity of the group that all members are present at each rehearsal. Courtesy would insure that the teacher is informed if a student is unable to attend her scheduled choir session. The Archdiocesan Choral Festivals, held in late February or early March are usually open to three Choir Members from Grades 4-5-6. Rules are sent by the Archdiocesan Choral Festival Committee; however, Villa auditions only Grade 5 Choir Members. An audition and dedication to the VILLA program are requirements for selection for participation. Additional information or answers to your questions for Choir may be directed to Sr. Margaret or Miss Connors. We ask that the Choir/Chorus Registration Form be returned to school before but not later than Wednesday, September 10, 2014. mlogrip@villamaria.org jconnors@villamaria.org 9

Villa Maria Academy GUITAR Information Guitar lessons are available for girls in grades 3 8. Lessons are in the Rehearsal Room, Terrace Floor. The cost of lessons is $825.00 for 27 private half hour sessions throughout the school year. You will be billed for the lessons, plus books, two times a year. Checks should be made payable to the guitar teacher, Mr. Dominic Mastrangelo. Lessons are on Fridays during the school day. Lessons rotate each week so that the girls do not miss the same class two weeks in a row. Before and after school lessons are also available at the same time each Friday. Schedules are posted on the Take Note Wall outside the Computer Lab and distributed to all the teachers on Friday afternoon for the upcoming week. Students are expected to bring their music and instrument each lesson day. However, school does have a few guitars which the girls are able to use for their lessons if they are unable to bring their own instrument on a particular day. The girls are able to perform in the Eucharistic Liturgies when they reach a certain skill level. They also can play in Archdiocesan Jazz Band if they are chosen after an audition. Each spring, all girls perform in a guitar orchestra recital with the guitar students from Upper Villa. We ask that the Guitar Registration Form be returned to school before but not later than Wednesday, September 10, 2014. If you have any additional questions please contact Dominic Mastrangelo (h) 610-269-7052 mrdguitar@verizon.net 11

The Tonechime Ensemble is an instrumental group consisting of 11 to 13 performers open to students in Grades 4 & 5.
