International School of Bremen Parent Bulletin 13 2017/18 Grade 12 IB and Grade 10 IGCSE Mock Exams These are seen as vital preparation for the real exams in May and June. They are set to take place from 15 to 23 January.2018. See attached schedules. PTA Summer Barbecue You will remember that we informed you of a new date for this year s summer barbecue, having changed it from 16 June to 2 June. It has now been brought to our attention that 2 June lies within Ramadan, ending on 14 June. So as not to put our Muslim families at a disadvantage, we are changing the date back to 16 June. Bake Sales - New Sales Area The ISB is known for its charitable initiatives and the ISB Community is always very supportive of them. Bakes Sales are a popular and often lucrative way of collecting money for a good cause. Please note, however, that due to the inevitable mess that goes with them - food morsels, crumbs, stains and the like -, all future bakes sales, sale of waffles etc. will take place in the Dining Room. This includes the eating of the purchased goods. We hope that this will not prevent you from supporting our students initiatives - thank you for your understanding. Our apologies for this toing and froing. Science Newsletter Our Science interns have been very busy putting together the November Science Newsletter and we would like to send you it as a supplement together with this Parent Bulletin. Fundraiser for Grade 11 Trip to Geneva Friday, 23 February 2018 7.00pm Malcolm Davis Hall Open to ISB Community (students from 16 years of age) Meet Our CAS Students... Anna Orr History/Economics Mrs Orr grew up at her family farm in Norfolk, England. She studied her degree and PGCE at the University of Wales, Swansea. Having taught History in schools in Birmingham and London, she decided to move to Cologne in 2003. She then moved to Bremen and started working at ISB in 2012. As a mother of three young children, she is very busy balancing work and life, but thoroughly enjoys both. She has a love for travel and adventure and recently spent 5 weeks travelling Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France on a road trip in their VW T3 Synchro Doka. INTRODUCING... Benjamin, Grade 11 For my Creativity section of CAS, I help to run a small streetwear brand called Verborgen Studios which in English means Hidden Studios. The brand was established in September and is currently being run by five people. Each person has their own responsibility due to the fact we all come from different backgrounds and live in different parts of the world. This makes our business quite international and diverse. As Head of Design, I take care of the designs and brand offers for collaboration. Currently we are working with the brands Glückstreter and Independent Truck, which is a well known skateboard brand that used to collaborate with Supreme. My goal is to integrate the brand into skate and streetwear stores such as Kicks, Solebox, and Titus. We have come to an agreement with Glückstreter and will start selling our clothing at the beginning of 2018. 1 017 Parent Bulletin 3
IGCSE Certificate Presentation Evening On 15 November 2017, thirty students, their parents and some of their teachers celebrated the achievements of the IGCSE class of 2017. The evening began with violin and piano recitals by our Grade 9 students, Inès and Vishal. The cultural theme of the evening was further extended by an exhibition of student artwork and the reading of two poems written by Cherno Jallow. A number of photo presentations and a speech by Mrs Balog reminded all, regardless of when they joined the school, of the educational and personal progress the students have made whilst with us. The former Grade 10 students were awarded their IGCSE and ICE certificates by Mr Walton and the evening closed with a drink, courtesy of the school, and a finger buffet kindly provide by their parents. 4 Parent Bulletin 1 017
GIN Forum, 24-26 November From Friday, 24th to Sunday, 26th November, ISB hosted a forum on The Different Faces of Africa led by the Global Issues Network group (GIN). Two schools, one from Denmark and one from Turkey, complemented our own GIN group, resulting in a total of 35 delegates. On Friday, the keynote speaker, Marie-Christine Nibagwire, a Rwandan genocide survivor held a touching talk about how she survived the genocide and the years that followed. She now tries to raise awareness for the problem of refugees and countries in war-time conflict. In the days that followed, teachers from ISB who had also experienced life in African countries and some of the hardships of the apartheid regime, gave their testimony. Students presentations gave an overview of general problems that African countries face, such as corruption, discrimination, low schooling and sanitation. Access to clean water in most African countries is a luxury, and on Sunday we heard from Pit Mau who has developed a way to effectively use microorganisms to clean air, rivers, and oceans. Students also had the opportunity to experience the African culture, both through cooking and tasting the African cuisine and through a dance workshop held by Marie-Christine herself. It was a great opportunity to reflect and cooperate in strategies that we as young adults may put in place to reduce the hardships of Africa. Text by Inès, Grade 12 1 017 Parent Bulletin 5
