HIGH SCHOOL ELIGIBILITY A High School student s eligibility to participate in school sponsored extracurricular activities is determined by grades! (No Pass, No Play) The state governing body (UIL) determines eligibility by taking a snapshot of the students grades every six weeks. At Huntsville this is equivalent to our report card grades, issued every six weeks, indicated by a Cycle Grade on the student s report card. This is the only grade that matters in determining eligibility. Semester grades do not count! Once the grade is official and on the student s report card it cannot be changed unless the teacher initiates an official grade change request. In other words, even if a student raises his/her grade to above passing after the six week grade check, their eligibility status will not change until the next grade check. If a student is not passing a class at the six week grade check, they become ineligible exactly 7 days (calendar week grace period) later at the end of the school day (3:30 p.m.). After three weeks the UIL allows a school to do another grade check (progress report) in which a student who is passing all classes may regain eligibility (after a one week grace period). Students only lose eligibility at the Cycle grades but can regain at the Progress grades.

Beginning of the School Year: Since there are no grades at the beginning of a school year, the UIL bases eligibility on the credit rule. This rule states a student must have earned 5 credits (that count towards graduation requirements!) during the previous 12 months. If a student has not met the credit rule they will be ineligible for the first six weeks of school.

WHY TAKE THE PSAT The PSAT is a 2 hour test given once a year in October. Most students take the PSAT to prepare for the SAT and to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Competition. Students should take the PSAT in the fall of their sophomore year. Reasons to take the PSAT: 1. Receive feedback on strengths and weakness on the test 2. See how your performance compares with others when applying to college 3. To enter the competition for National Merit Scholarships 4. To become familiar with types of questions and directions you will see on the SAT 5. Receive an online Score Report that allows you to review each test question, your answer, and the correct answer with answer explanations

NCAA ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS NCAA Division 1 and Division 2 require 16 core courses (see below). 10 of the core courses must be completed before the start of the seventh semester of high school. These 10 courses become locked in and cannot be retaken for grade improvement. Division 1 uses a sliding scale to match test scores and core grade-point average. Division 2 requires a minimum SAT score of 820 or an ACT sum score of 68, and a minimum core GPA of 2.0 The SAT scores used for the NCAA is only the critical reading and math sections. The ACT score used for the NCAA is the sum of the four sections: English, math, reading, and science Only approved NCAA courses will be used to calculate the core GPA. The list of these courses can be found at www.eligibilitycenter.org

NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE (NOW CALLED NCAA ELIGIBILITY CENTER) What is the NCAA Clearinghouse? The NCAA Clearinghouse is an essential step in becoming eligible to play college sports. If you want to receive a scholarship at the D1 or D2 level, you will need to register and be cleared by the NCAA. The Eligibility center is the organization within the NCAA that determines the academic eligibility and amateur status for all NCAA D1 and D2 athletes. How do you register with the NCAA Clearinghouse? The first step is to create your account. This is done on the website www.athleticscholarships.net/ncaa-clearinghouse.htm. Once your account is created you will receive an email to finish the registration process. You will have to submit transcripts from every high school attended, any test scores (SAT or ACT), and an amateur status questionnaire before you are officially registered. This should be done by the start of your Junior year. The fee to register with the clearinghouse is currently $70.00. How do I know my eligibility status? The clearinghouse will not review your information unless it has been requested by an NCAA university. Over 60% of athletes who are registered with the NCAA are never recruited by a college coach. Only a coach can request an official review of your initial eligibility. Registering with the NCAA does not help you get recruited by college coaches. What about a NCAA Division 3 school? If you plan on playing for a D3 college, you do not have to register with the NCAA What about NAIA schools? NAIA requirements are: finish in top half of your graduating class, minimum GPA of 2.0, score 860 on SAT or 16 on ACT NAIA has its own Eligibility Center you will have to register with

Percentage of D1 schools that can recruit you based on your GPA GPA 4.0 = 100% GPA 3.5 = 78% GPA 3.0 = 55% GPA 2.5 = 23% GPA 2.0 = 8%

COLLEGE VISITS Official Visits: any visit to a college campus by you or your parents paid for by the college. The college may pay the following expenses. Transportation to and from Room and meals 3 per day Reasonable entertainment expenses, including 3 comp admissions to a home game Before a college may invite you on an official visit, you will have to provide the college with a copy of your high-school transcript (Division 1 only), and SAT or ACT score. Allowed beginning first day of classes your senior year Limit 1 official visit per college, maximum of 5 colleges Unofficial Visits: any visit by you or your parents to a college campus paid for by you or your parents. The only expense you may receive from the college is three comp admissions to a home game. You may make as many unofficial visits as you like and may take those visits at any time.

Division 1 (now known as FBS): SCHOLARSHIP DIFFERENCES Total of 85 scholarships allowed per college at any one time Can only offer a maximum of 25 in any one year (that means only 2,925 Division 1 scholarships available for the entire country) There are no partial scholarships in FBS football Only allowed 20 walk-on / preferred walk-on Division 1 AA (now known as FCS): Only allowed 63 total scholarships per college at any one time They can divide those 63 scholarships among no more than 85 players Can accept Division 1 transfers who would be eligible to play immediately Division 2: Only allowed 36 total scholarships but D2 schools can break up their scholarships Most players will be on partial scholarship Will get some transfers

SCHOLARSHIP DIFFERENCES Division 3: Provide no Athletic Scholarships or special opportunities for student-athletes Grant and Aid packages determined through academics, testing, and need. Junior Colleges: Junior colleges fall into a category similar to that of Division 2 schools, in that they are able to break up scholarships as they see fit.

What Does All This Mean?

START PREPARING REALISTICALLY First and Foremost, be a student-athlete Must begin thinking about tomorrow, today Keep records of academic info current Be thinking what and where is a place of interest for me Recruiting services you don t need them! Rivals/Underarmour/Nike Camps and Combines

RECRUITING WEBSITES/SERVICES Recruiting services pitch exposure as the ultimate recruiting tool and the number one reason that you won t be recruited using the theory that if coaches don t know you, they cannot recruit you. While exposure is important, it s exposure at the right level coupled with what a coach needs for his team and what a coach looks for in a player. No amount of exposure will help you get recruited by any college coach in any sport if you lack the size or skill to play for that particular team. Recruiting services can be very expensive so you have to weigh your families goals and needs against the potential reward. Don t assume that if an athlete cannot play Division 1, they can play Division 2, and if not Division 2, then they can play Division 3. Scholarship limits imposed by the NCAA are for the purpose of developing parity and competitiveness at each level.

WHAT COLLEGE COACHES ARE REALLY LOOKING FOR IN A HIGHLIGHT VIDEO Keep it brief but impactful Keep a highlight video to around five minutes Put your best stuff first Add variety to your highlight Use a host of different types of plays to show a variety of skills Consider the music selection Don t use questionable music causing a coach to question your judgement Don t interrupt a play to spotlight yourself If you use a spotlight, do it before the play begins If you play both sides of the ball, share clips from multiple positions Make your first video before your senior season and then update from the first 3 or 4 games

BE REALISTIC 51, 000 football players in Texas.400 received Division 1 scholarships. Not to be discouraged, but to be honest. We want you to enjoy this time and learn lessons that will apply to the rest of your life. Control what you can control Academics Strength Training Attitude Being the Best you can be

Less than 1 in 16 high school seniors playing football this year (or 6 percent) will go on to play at any of the 632 NCAA schools that have a football team About 8 in 10,000 (or.08 percent) of high school seniors playing football this year will eventually be drafted by an NFL team

Number of Scholarships for Men s Sports in Division 1 Football 85 Basketball 13 Baseball 11.7 Cross Country / Track and Field 12.6 Golf 4.5 Soccer 9.9 Swimming 9.9 Tennis 4.5 Wrestling 9.9

FAFSA FAFSA stands for Free Application for Student Aid. Anyone who is planning on attending college is to fill out a form. Forms are available in the counselor s office or on the internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov. This is very important, because federal student aid is given out on a first come first served basis. The earliest aid can be applied for is October 1, and the latest date is June 30.

WHAT DO THE COACHES DO FOR YOU? Help and guide you in the creation of a highlight to be shown to all interested coaches. Create a profile page given to every coach we come into contact with. We provide SAT, ACT, and financial aid information and deadlines. We promote you and this team in any way possible. We push you to become the best person, student, and athlete you can be!

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP YOURSELF? Be organized and have a plan. Research colleges that interest you. Make your grades! Do as well as you possibly can in all your classes. Have a great off-season. Improve as much as possible on all your tests. Play great next year and help us have a great season! The further we go in the playoffs, the more exposure you get. Sign up to take the tests Let us know when you get your scores in Be realistic in your expectations Keep the TEAM first and remember that the more success we have as a TEAM, the more rewards there are for everyone Represent yourself well when coaches come on campus Spring football is BIG!

JUNIOR DAYS & SUMMER CAMPS All schools have junior days in the spring If you are really interested in a school, you need to go! Information will be available on each school website If you are interested in going to a school, you also need to go to their summer camp Save money by going to a one day camp rather than a week-long camp Talk to the HHS coaches on which camps they recommend Be ready to run when you get there! They are evaluating you!

IN CONCLUSION Know we are working for your student/athletes Recruiters know we will be honest with all recruiters about our athletes, always Letters mean they are tracking you and evaluating you Camps are for evaluation, not to teach you how to play the game. Chance to showcase yourself. Test scores SAT or ACT as a Junior
