1. Aims The course is designed to provide skills and knowledge in use of the English language for general purposes. It includes academic purposes but is not limited to such purposes. The Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced modules provide students the opportunity to focus on particular areas of English relevant to the student s interest. 2. Course Outcomes The ELICOS - General English course provides students with the necessary English skills for the following purposes: To facilitate attainment of educational, vocational and social goals. To facilitate access to employment through language skill development. To enhance the learner s ability to function effectively in the Australian community. To meet English language requirements for cross cultural organisations. Preparation for undertaking other studies at Unity College Australia. Preparation for studies at other educational institutions within Australia. 3. Overview This ELICOS course is based on specific and relevant learning outcomes, and will provide a comprehensive range of English skills necessary to live and work in Australian society. This course will involve classroom-based delivery, but will utilise a wide range of teachinglearning methods, as language learning is best achieved through communicative activities. Students will be given suitable opportunities to interact with Australian society in a range of circumstances. This will be done at a level appropriate to the level of English being studied and under appropriate supervision. This course has been based around flexible entry and exit. Due to this, students may enter at the start of any module (subject to placement test), and exit at any point during the subsequent modules. This allows for more flexibility with visas and language needs. This course allows for those who are permanent residents, those on student visas, those on tourist visas and those on working holiday visas. 4. Duration ELICOS - General English is based on flexible entry and exit, therefore, the duration of the course may vary between students. Each module in this General English course is 10 weeks in duration, with the language needs of each student determining how long they will study for. This course consists of 5 modules, run over five 10 week terms. Student intake occurs at the beginning of each term/10 week module. Unity College Australia RTO 6330 CRICOS 02160A Page 1 of 9

5. Costs 2018 Application Fee For students wishing to undertake formal assessed study there is a one off non-refundable enrolment application fee. Domestic students $150 International students $300 Academic Fees Module fees for full-time students of these courses are: Australian Students Per Module (10 week term) $2,700 International students (on a student visa) Per Module (10 week term) $3,000 Enrolment in 4 modules (4 terms = 1 year) $11,400 Enrolment in 5 modules (5 terms = 15 months) $14,100 Note: The College reserves the right to alter fees prior to the start of each academic year. Resource Fees A resource fee for each module is included in the academic fees. This is used to purchase the New English File Student Book (Oxford University Press), as well as other resources and equipment that will assist the language development of students. 6. Entry Requirements All applicants are assessed for their initial level of English Language skills. This is done using an IELTS or TOEFL test or equivalent in order to indicate their English language level. However, all students will be assessed prior to commencement, in order to accurately place them in the level that suits their needs. As a guide, the following English scores will be required to enter each module: Module 1 (Elementary) Module 2 (Pre-Intermediate) Module 3 (Intermediate) Module 4 (Upper Intermediate) Module 5 (Advanced) ENTRY International English Language Testing System (IELTS) less than 4.0; TOEFL ibt < 30; Common European Framework (CEF) A1 ENTRY IELTS 4.0; TOEFL ibt 31; Completion of CEF A2, Module 1 or equivalent ENTRY IELTS 5.0; TOEFL ibt 35; Completion of CEF B1, Module 2 or equivalent ENTRY IELTS 6.0; TOEFL ibt 60; Completion of CEF B2, Module 3 or equivalent ENTRY IELTS 7.0; TOEFL ibt 94; Completion of CEF C1, Module 4 or equivalent General requirements for entry are: Completion of year 12 schooling or equivalent A completed student application form & payment of the application fee Minimum entry age is 18 years Students must subscribe to the standards of Unity College Australia. This means that students will: respect college authority and other students respect college and student property comply with cultural and social standards including: o o o o modesty of dress honesty and integrity in dealing with others sensitivity to students from cultures different to one s own no consumption of alcohol or non-medicinal drugs, nor being under the influence of the same, while on campus. 7. Training Process Each module (Elementary Advanced) will be taught over a 10 week period, with students progressing from one module to the next based on successful completion of the lower level module. This course entails a minimum of 20 hours of face to face classroom tuition. In addition students will have a range of requirements for out of classroom study and activities. Unity College Australia adopts adult-learning principles. Students in this program are therefore expected to take charge of their own learning process. It is expected that each student will be committed to meeting the requirements of the relevant course and will attend relevant classes and activities and complete all work required for assessment. 8. 9. Assessment overview A wide range of assessment tools are used including: attendance and class participation meaningful real life activities in Australian society involving the student practical research and excursions computerised learning tools written assignments, exercises, presentations and/or tests journal/process diary completion written assignments, essays and quizzes oral presentations and class discussions On completion of each module, the student will receive a Certificate of Achievement and an Academic Transcript (Statement of Results) listing learning outcomes achieved. Assessment criteria apply to grading. Final assessment for each unit of study will be graded, based on a student s level of achievement. Final Academic Transcripts will show results only for module outcomes assessed as satisfactorily achieving grades of A. B or C. Grading explanations are as follows: Explanation of Grades The student has achieved results which demonstrate knowledge, understanding and use of English at an excellent level. The student has achieved results which demonstrate knowledge, understanding and use of English at a very good level. The student has achieved results which demonstrate knowledge, understanding and use of English at a satisfactory level. Student has achieved results which demonstrate knowledge, understanding and use of English below a satisfactory level. Grade Awarded 80% or more A 70% to 79% B 60% to 69% C 59% or less D In cases where students complete only part of a module they will be eligible to receive a Statement of Partial Completion, Students will be recommended for graduation once the following requirements are met: All academic requirements completed and assessed Payment of all outstanding fees owed to Unity College Australia Return of any loaned college resources, e.g. library books Maintained a satisfactory level of conduct during the course and on campus Maintained a satisfactory level of attendance during the course Completion of any co-curricular requirements Unity College Australia RTO 6330 CRICOS 02160A Page 8 of 9

Pathways Completion of course modules will prepare students for other tertiary studies requiring English language skills (certificate, diploma, degrees) including all courses offered at Unity College Australia. 11.
