Essential Learning Behaviours Resilience Resourcefulness Reflectiveness Reciprocity Respect Guy Claxton Building Learning Power (2002)

Inside the Classroom Asking and answering questions At Tapton teachers follow a no hands approach to questioning; in the classroom any student could be asked a question at any time (Resilience). Furthermore, students themselves are expected to ask their own questions. Asking questions is an essential way of clarifying and/or developing your understanding (Resourcefulness). Acting on marking Marking at Tapton is written and verbal. It is positive, critical and formative; it identifies what you have done well, what you need to improve and how to improve. You will be expected to reflect upon your marking and act upon your marking (Reflectiveness). Completing past paper questions under timed conditions Poor timing is one of the main causes of underachievement in examinations. At Tapton you will be expected to regularly complete past paper questions under timed conditions; you won t always succeed and you may experience failure for the first time in your school life; however, with feedback from your teachers and help from your peers you will learn how to withstand and recover from difficulty (Resilience). This process culminates in the Spring Term when you will engage in Trial Exam Weeks. Here you will be off timetable for a week and take trials in all of your forthcoming exams under exam conditions.

Inside the Classroom Working with others At Tapton you will be expected to work with others. Sharing ideas and creating positive relationships with other students in the classroom will improve your learning. For example, you will often be asked to think, pair, share (Reciprocity). Attendance and engagement At Tapton attendance and punctuality is monitored on a daily basis. Persistent nonattendance leads to withdrawal from Sixth Form. Unauthorised absences are shared with parents each day via text. Poor punctuality (four minute rule) leads to lunchtime detentions (Respect).
