Job Description: Director of Sport and PE at Vinehall School Responsible to: Head of Vinehall School Deputy Head Job Purpose: To ensure that Vinehall School s PE and Games programme enables all pupils to have opportunities to enjoy sport, have fun and take pride in representing the School. Relationships: The post holder is responsible to the Head and Deputy Head in all matters. The post holder will interact on a professional level with colleagues and seek to establish and maintain productive relationships in order to promote the School. Duties: the duties outlined in this job description may be modified by the Head, with the post holder s agreement, to reflect or anticipate changes in the job, commensurate with the salary and job title. General Responsibilities To lead and develop a strategy for Sport for all pupils at Vinehall. To co-ordinate the Sports programme for Vinehall. To engender a sport for all ethos in both the pupils and games staff To liaise with the Directors of Sport at feeder senior schools to ensure that there is continuity of strategy, ethos in training and development of staff and pupils across the 4-18 age range. To be responsible for the development of Sport, through extending participation and enjoyment amongst pupils in a range of Games. To monitor and develop the quality of teaching/coaching in all Games and the progress of pupils through the use of external coaching expertise and the School s performance development programme as appropriate. To oversee team selection. To play a full and active role in the extra-curricular sporting programme. Identification of MAGT pupils and the development of a programme to enhance, challenge and stretch. To be responsible for health and safety matters with regard to Sport. To prepare and manage the annual departmental budget and take responsibility for the allocation and care of resources in the Department. Could we include organisation of sporting holiday clubs to extra-curricular and working with 3rd party coaches/organisations e.g. Essential Sports. Seek to maximise letting opportunities to other local sports clubs perhaps? Add about bringing in top sportspeople to develop / promote the school. To maintain and develop an up-to-date entry in the Sports Department Handbook. To contribute to the School Development Plan in respect of the Sports Department.
To attend parent consultation evenings, open days and other events as directed by the Head. Academic Duties: To teach all aspects of the Games and PE curriculum at Vinehall. Be responsible for the specific subject area of PE and ensure consistency and continuity in the planning and delivery of the curriculum and schemes of work within it in liaison with the Deputy Head and Assistant Head Academic. Monitor and observe lessons to ensure a high standard of teaching and learning in the Department. Lead the teaching of PE across all year groups. Monitor and further the professional development of all colleagues through the provision of INSET courses. Attend academic and pastoral staff meetings as required. Liaise closely with the office staff regarding the dissemination of information within School and to other schools in terms of fixtures. Oversee all fixtures, sports trips/tours and invitational events in consultation with the Head, Senior Management Team and other Games staff. Staffing Responsibilities: Act as Line Manager to all members of PE and Games Staff at Vinehall. Liaise with the Senior Management Team on the day to day running of the PE and Games Department. Be supportive to all staff involved in the delivery of PE and Games. Liaise with catering and grounds staff. Oversee the allocation of staff to Games groups. Health and Safety: To monitor that the School Health and Safety policy is implemented in each of the sports. To ensure and monitor that risk assessments are in place for each area of the PE and games curriculum. To ensure and monitor that all hazards, accidents and near misses that happen in relation to sport at Vinehall School are reported to the Head and/or Health and Safety Officer. Committees and Meetings:
To chair regular and meaningful meetings of the Games Committee. To attend regular whole school meetings as required To report regularly to the Head. Postgraduate qualification in a related subject First aid qualification SPECIALIST SKILLS EXPERIENCE & Strong background in leadership in Sport Experience of leading strategic sports planning in at least one school Experience of leading sporting initiatives Evidence of an interest in sports development and innovation. Ability to coach a t l e a s t one sport to a high level. PE and Sports experience teaching and practical. Teaching experience of children in the EYFS, KS1, KS2 and KS3 Good IT and written skills. Evidence of continuous professional development. Previous experience as Head of Sport Experience of chairing committees Knowledge of best practice for teaching and learning. Up to date knowledge of current learning strategies. Professional understanding of the educational needs of children. Experience of coordinating and organising fixtures. Experience of leading sports trips / tours at home and/or overseas.
