IB Program Requirements Take 6 classes from the six subject groups: Group 1: IB English Language & Literature HL Group 2: Foreign Language (Spanish, French, Chinese, Arabic) HL or SL Group 3: IB History (HL), IB Psychology (SL), IB Anthropology (SL) Group 4: Chemistry (SL), Physics (HL/SL), Biology (SL/HL), Environmental Systems (SL), Sports Health Exercise Science (SL) Group 5: Math Studies (SL), Math SL, or Math HL Group 6: -Film (HL), Visual Art (HL/SL), Music (HL/SL), Theatre (HL), or another Group 2, 3, or 4
IB Program Requirements (Continued) Take 3 HL classes and 3 SL classes Some students choose to take an additional class Some students take 4 HL and 2 SL classes Score a 24 or higher on exams (this includes Internal Assessments) Each subject is worth 7 points Pass Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay Complete CAS Requirements 5-8 experiences logged in ManageBac

Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, & CAS Extended Essay: 4000 word essay on a topic of student s choice Juniors will start this essay in TOK and work on it throughout 2nd semester. They will submit a final copy by the end of the school year. Seniors will formally submit essay to IB at the end of their TOK 2 semester. Theory of Knowledge: Taken 1st semester of Junior and Senior year To pass TOK, students must pass their presentation and their prescribed title writing, both of which are completed during TOK 2 CAS: Creativity, Action, and Service Students must record 4-7 experiences and reflections Students will use ManageBac to keep track of their CAS requirements
s l i a t e D y a s s E d Extende All IB Juniors are enrolled in an Extended Essay class for second semester. They will work on this essay every day during that time. Juniors will submit a final copy of the essay at the end of junior year, which will count as an MCPS grade. Extended Essays are officially submitted in January of a student s senior year. Students may make changes HOWEVER, the TOK teacher has to authenticate the essay. A teacher may not be willing to do this if the essay has undergone many changes.
Sample Extended Essay Research Questions How does sacrifice play a role in George Orwell s novel Animal Farm? How do international sports for teens have the potential to create peace? Did Greece make the right decision by entering the Euro currency? To what extent has digitization of the Chinese written language caused an imbalance between cultural significance and efficiency in modern society? How are creativity and depression connected; and furthermore how do the treatments of depression affect the creative individual? To what extent did the Peninsular War influence the 1810 Mexican War of Independence? What effect does the celebrity background of a candidate running for office have on their campaign?
Creativity, Action, and Service Students will need to complete 4-7 experiences, distributed among the three categories. Must accomplish all 7 learning outcomes. Creativity- anything leading to an interpretive or original product or performance Action- physical exertion Service- engagement with the community in response to an authentic need Students will also complete a CAS Project which is a self-directed, collaborative project that has a defined purpose or goal and focuses on the CAS strands. IB Exams and Fees Students take their IB exams in May of their final year of the course. Students must be registered for exams by November 15th, or an additional fee will be included. Payment is due November 1st. Payments can be made by check or online. If you do not know how much you owe, please contact me. Please contact me if there are financial considerations. We also appreciate any donations for those who are able to contribute.
Ways to Support our Candidates Make sure students are attending class every day. Seek Academic help: TAP, Baron Time, IB Lunch groups Communicate with teachers and coordinator. Check IB-BCC website, IB Google Classroom, Yahoo parent list serve, and email to stay up to date. Check in on student progress on IA s, Extended Essay, and CAS
College and IB Students can request their IB scores to be sent to specific colleges during their senior year, BEFORE exam scores are released. When students access scores on candidates.ibo.org, they can request for scores to be sent to colleges. Check the College Matriculation section of our website to find a list of schools and what they accept in terms of IB scores. https://ib-bcc.com/diploma/college-matriculation/ Students can sign up for the IB Student Registry in which they create a profile to showcase their IB work and to express interest in colleges. https://registry.ibo.org

Parents: We Need Your Help! 1. Let s celebrate our IB students accomplishments! Help plan/organize an event or donate supplies/food 2. Guest speaker ideas? 3. Volunteer to be an exam invigilator for at least one exam. Exams are every day starting May 2nd- May 19th. One in the morning, one in the afternoon.
