ALTONA P-9 COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Edition 11 August 4th 2017 2017 Key Dates Year 7 Life Fit For Girls Mon 7 & 14th August Tues 22 & 29 August Junior School Council Wed 9th August Year 3 & 4 Illustrative workshop Tues 22nd August Year P-6 Book week dress up day Fri 25th August Dear families We had a very positive response to our parent teacher interviews this week with families taking the opportunity to meet with staff to discuss mid-year reports. A significant body of research indicates that when parents participate in their children s education, the result is an increase in student achievement and an improvement of students attitudes. Productive partnerships between schools, families and the community also provide a strong network of connections that can help protect young people against a range of harms including those associated with drugs, emotional distress and problem behaviours. Thank you for taking the opportunity to show your child that you want them to do well at school and to celebrate their successes or provide guidance as required. We have a wonderful partnership with Hobsons Bay City Council. Hayley Giles, Year 9 is currently experiencing life in Anjo Japan. This is the sister city of Hobsons Bay. Hayley is having a wonderful time experiencing quite a different culture, language and the range of opportunities being offered. She has certainly embraced the opportunity with the Anjo council being wonderful hosts. Hayley s family and the school are certainly very proud to have her represent our council on this international endeavour. It will be life changing for her in so many ways and such a challenge stepping outside her comfort zone. We look forward to Hayley s return and learning about her adventures. Every three years a citizen s delegation also visits Hobsons Bay. Last year a delegation presented the Hobsons Bay International Friendship Association with a cultural gift, a piece of calligraphy by Anjo artist Ms Sekiyo Yokoyama titled Love. It represents the affection among parent and child, fraternal love, friendship and sister city relationship. An expression of man s gentle manners and tenderness. The Association seeks to display these cultural works in our community. As our school has a connection with Hobsons Bay sister city, we are delighted to have the opportunity for this art work to find a prominent place at Altona P-9 College to be appreciated by the school Community. This week we have had two kindergarten classes from Altona visit our college. The children have had a wonderful time interacting with our prep class, participating in breakfast club and enjoying perceptual motor activities in the gym expertly facilitated by our sports science students. Thank you to Miss Paten, Mrs Ginis and the preps for embracing the visit. We are enrolling preps for 2018. If you know of a family who is looking for a prep placement, please encourage them to make a time to tour our college. If there are any siblings who are not yet enrolled, please assist us by completing an enrolment form. I am currently planning our staffing for 2018 and need accurate enrolments figures. The current prep students celebrated their 100 days of school last week. They enjoyed a celebration party and completed activities throughout the day to celebrate the milestone. Congratulations to all our preps, they are certainly like little sponges, soaking up the learning opportunities in the classroom. They are now officially 100 days smarter! The journey to senior education has commenced for our Year 9 students who are attending Paisley Senior next year. This week they made their course selections. Staff from the college are meeting individually with the students to ensure they have their pathway pre-planned. This process and a strong orientation program ensures a smooth transition for them into year 10. Mrs Jayne Taylor is settling in to Year 4 whilst Miss Walker is on leave. Mrs Farley will join us on Monday replacing Mrs Ginis in the intervention program whilst she is on leave. All staff will be back on deck later in term 3. Mr Kelly and Mr Vening are expected back in term 4. Altona P-9 College, 103a Grieve Parade, Altona 3018. Private Bag 9, Altona 3018. School News Hayley, 9B Currently on her Japanese exchange program. P-6 Book Week Dress Up Day Friday 25th August Each year schools across Australia spend a week celebrating books, Australian authors and illustrators. On Friday 25th August P-6 students will be conducting activities relating to the theme Escape to Everywhere, to highlight the importance of reading. We would like students to dress up as their favourite book character on this day. We encourage students to be as creative as possible by making costumes or adapting clothes to fit in with their chosen character. There will be a costume parade in the morning which families and friends are welcome to attend.
