FINE ARTS An expanded Fine Arts focus allows students to combine courses such as acting/ film, dance/music and multiple visual arts. The school has a full theatre and complete range of drama and theatre courses, dance studio, as well as an awardwinning video production program. Music programs include: choir, jazz band, junior band, senior band, concert choir and guitar. APPLIED SKILLS/TECHNOLOGY A complete range of business courses includes automotive, construction, electronics, metal art and drafting. Specialized equipment includes a drafting computer lab and hoists and engine analysis equipment. The school has a teaching kitchen for its culinary arts programs as well a full range of foods, textiles, human services and family management courses. 4

GARIBALDI SECONDARY ATHLETICS Garibaldi has a full gymnasium and fitness centre with weights and cardio equipment. Students can participate in a wide range of sports, including rugby, basketball, soccer, volleyball and cross-country, swimming and water polo. STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES A wide range of services are provided for students, including a full-time counsellor, youth care worker, aboriginal support worker and daily teacher advisory program to foster strong student connections to the school. UNIQUE FEATURES Garibaldi Secondary offers pre-ib and IB programs for students in Grades 8-12. Beginning September 2017, Garibaldi will also be offering the Middle Years IB program. The school has three post-secondary apprenticeship programs (electrician, carpentry and plumbing), as well as an Interdisciplinary Arts (IA) Academy, which features theatre, drama and dance. Programs include advanced placement, honours courses, as well as second language courses in Spanish, Japanese, German, and French. The school also offers technology-supported classes (ipad carts, labs). FINE ARTS The school s award-winning music program includes concert bands, jazz bands, concert choirs, vocal jazz and Motown choirs. In addition, students have the opportunity to explore drama, art, ceramics and sculpture, graphic arts, digital photography, media arts and film studies. ATHLETICS The school has three gymnasiums and full weight room and fitness centre. Team sports include basketball, field hockey, golf, volleyball, wrestling, rugby, badminton, cheerleading, cross country, ball hockey, field lacrosse, track & field, swimming and intramurals. The school also has a lacrosse box, tennis courts and wrestling room. Student yoga classes are also available. 6

MAPLE RIDGE SECONDARY STUDENT SUPPORT The school offers special education programs to fully meet the needs of all students. Available services include learning assistance, a gifted program and regular tutorial sessions. Full-time counselling, aboriginal support and youth care worker services are also offered. A career centre assists students with postsecondary planning, work experience and volunteer opportunities. Alternate programs include Teen Parent, Journey (ages 12-15) and Outreach (ages 16-19). APPLIED SKILLS/TECHNOLOGY A wide range of skill development courses are available and may be used towards a certificate program. Courses offered include: cabinet construction, automotive technology, digital video and animation, cook training, cafeteria training, culinary arts and textiles. UNIQUE FEATURES Early and late French Immersion programs allow students to complete their French Immersion education with an appropriate complement of courses. A Digital Arts Academy allows students to earn certificates in seven areas focusing on the use of computers to create artwork. The academy offers courses in digital art using Photoshop, 3D modelling and animation, special effects for film, desktop publishing, website design, multimedia programming for game development, contemporary music and music composition and sound engineering. Junior and senior level leadership classes, as well as peer tutoring and Link Crew mentorship program, are also available. Students may also choose from a wide variety of extra-curricular clubs, including Science Fair, HOPE (Helping Other People Everywhere), Model United Nations, outdoor, fly fishing, strategic games, improv and cabaret nights. www.sd42.ca 7

Students can choose from several university prep and vocational programs that follow a linear September- June schedule. Also featured is a daily one-hour FLEX block that allows students to choose their learning activity and location, thus promoting independence, ownership and personalization. FINE ARTS PMSS features programs in visual, theatre and musical arts. Visual arts students produce top-quality 2D and 3D pieces of work that are regularly displayed throughout the community of Pitt Meadows. The music program features both beginner and advanced concert band and guitar classes while PMSS also offers drama/theatre classes at all grade levels. 8

PITT MEADOWS SECONDARY APPLIED SKILLS/TECHNOLOGY A full range of applied skills elective options include: automotive, textiles, woodwork, metal tech, welding, cooking, power mechanics, robotics, maker space programs, desktop publishing, digital media, photography, computer technology and others. ATHLETICS PMSS is known for its far-reaching and successful athletics program. Sports offered include basketball (boys and girls), volleyball (girls), ball hockey (boys and girls), football (boys and girls, provincial champions in 2016), soccer (boys and girls), lacrosse (boys), cross- country (boys and girls), track and field (boys and girls) and golf (boys and girls). A number of recreational clubs also are offered such as ski and snowboarding, outdoors club, yoga, fitness and conditioning and weightlifting. STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES PMSS offers support for students with a variety of learning needs. Support is available through support teachers, an aboriginal support teacher, special education assistants, and/or a youth worker. UNIQUE FEATURES PMSS is home to the Pacific Rim Hockey Academy, a program popular with both local and international students. The Grade 8 transition program provides a podded approach to learning and thus eases the transition from elementary to secondary school. Also included in the school s Grade 8 and 9 years is a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)/Laptop program that promotes computer enhanced academic instruction and learning. Engineering, gifted programs, French and Spanish are also offered. FINE ARTS A comprehensive program embraces visual arts, drama, theatre, choral guitar and a progressive School of Rock. APPLIED SKILLS/TECHNOLOGY A strong focus on the integration of technology and learning is one of SRT s hallmarks. The school features digital media and design, SRT-TV broadcasting, and cutting-edge junior/senior high-tech engineering. 10

SAMUEL ROBERTSON TECHNICAL ATHLETICS Titan athletics involve students across all grades and include football, field lacrosse, rugby, volleyball, basketball, cross country, badminton, field hockey, ice hockey, soccer, and more. SRT has a state-of-the-art gymnasium, weight training, fitness and wrestling facilities, as well as a turf field. STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES Samuel Robertson Technical is a full service neighbourhood school that provides complete counselling support, academic advisory, and caters to a wide range of special education needs. The school offers full-time counselling, aboriginal support and youth care worker services. UNIQUE FEATURES A high technology focus is blended with an expansive academic program. SRT offers the Microsoft IT Academy and post-secondary partnership programs for Grades 11 and 12, including carpentry, metal fabrication, hairstyling, culinary arts, and welding. Students at SRT participate in a variety of clubs focused on many topics, from social justice to robotics. Along with a full international program that attracts students from all over the world, the school also offers annual international field trips. SRT also has a next-generation learning commons library, media and research centre. Starting in September 2017, SRT will also be offering a Hockey Academy for students in Grades 8-12 that allows them to balance their educational requirements with the development of their hockey skills. www.sd42.ca 11

In Grades 9-12 students can explore a variety of educational interests and skillbuilding classes. Courses include languages (French, Spanish, and Japanese), advanced placement, and a successful work experience program. In Grades 10-12, classes take place one hour per week with students able to plan their time according to their needs. As well, students in Grades 11-12 can apply for a formal work-at-home program one day per week. FINE ARTS Thomas Haney offers senior and junior stage bands, concert band, concert choir, senior and junior choir, orchestra for all grades, drama, film and variety of art classes. The school s dance program allows students in Grades 9-12 to earn credit through the independent directed studies at the school. Dance students also have the option to take school-based master classes. 12

THOMAS HANEY SECONDARY APPLIED SKILLS/TECHNOLOGY The school offers woodwork, carpentry and joinery, auto and metal technology courses as well as computer technology, business education, desktop publishing and photography, teaching kitchen, cooking and nutrition and textile studies. ATHLETICS Athletic offerings include basketball, volleyball, rugby, curling, golf, swimming, cross country, soccer, mountain biking, badminton, weight lifting, track and field, field hockey, E-Sports team and more. The school has a large gym with separate weight training and cardio facilities. Senior yoga classes are also offered. A variety of intramural sports are also available throughout the year for all students. THSS offers a Grade 8 Athletic Pod where students receive targeted strength and conditioning classes. STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES A wide range of services and supports are open to all students, including two fulltime counsellors, an aboriginal support worker and child-care worker. All students have a teacher advisor (TA) who works as the child s advocate at school. UNIQUE FEATURES Thomas Haney provides the opportunity for students to explore self-directed learning (SDL), has just added the Microsoft IT Academy, and also offers the Adobe Certification Academy. THSS also has an Accelerated Grade 8 program and an inter-disciplinary program, Connections 11. An Equestrian Academy allows students to earn credits for pursuing academic and practical equestrian studies. Starting in September 2017, the school will be introducing a Dance Academy for students who want to to improve their technique and creativity. Westview has a thriving international population which adds to the wonderful diversity of the school. The school has Grade 8 designated digital classrooms and nextgeneration learning commons library and research centre. FINE ARTS Music classes consist of band, jazz band, concert band and choir. Drama and art classes are also available through to Grade 12. The school has a state-of-the-art theatre, performance arts facilities and arts studio featuring ceramic and pottery rooms. Digital photography and media arts are also offered. APPLIED SKILLS/TECHNOLOGY Students are encouraged to bring their own devices (laptops, tablets, smartphones) to access free and secure high speed Wi-Fi service. As classes at Westview are often driven by the latest online resources, over 200 Surface 3s, ipads, and laptop computers are available around the school as well as three fullysupported advanced purpose computer labs. 14

WESTVIEW SECONDARY Westview s Applied Design Skills and Technologies is a place where students can Customize their futures by exploring their passions using both low and high tech. Westview encourages student creativity and innovation and actively supports bringing their engineering designs to life. Areas open to exploration include wood technology, metal technology, textiles, foods, marketing, as well as the digital media, 3D modelling, video game design, film editing and special effects, and graphic design. The school incorporates leading-edge technology such as CNC machining, laser engraving, vinyl cutting as well as 3D printing into many facets of student work, while not neglecting traditional hand work. From sewing machines to welding torches and grinders, table saws to blenders and sanders, students lead the learning in how to use them all. ATHLETICS The school s physical education department has a first-class gymnasium, weight training and fitness facilities. Students can also take yoga classes, Ultimate Fitness or use the state-of-the-art turf field. Westview s athletics program includes basketball, soccer, rugby, field hockey, volleyball, wrestling, track and field and more. Students are also welcome to use the weight room at lunch or after school. STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES A broad range of student support is provided, including full-time counselling, aboriginal support and youth care workers services. UNIQUE FEATURES Westview, a Microsoft Showcase School, hosts the Microsoft IT Academy (ITA) program that provides students industry-leading technology skills. Students have the opportunity to obtain official Microsoft Certifications in a variety of Microsoft programs with the ultimate goal of receiving a MOS Master Certification. Westview also offers the BCIT Automotive Service Technician Partnership. Criminology, psychology, peer leadership and peer tutoring classes and global education/social justice programs are also offered. A Soccer Academy offers inclass and on-field soccer instruction for Grades 8-12.
